Landed on my back and now my chest hurts?

Medical advice please. So I knuckled a jump to my back and thought I was just winded for the rest of the day, but apart from a sore back most of the pain is in my chest. I don't think I broke any ribs because I can breathe deeply, but it is ridiculously painful to cough or sneeze. The pain in the chest is like directly in the front center of my ribs. This seems like something that could happen a lot, so anyone else know a couple things it could be? Bruised/cracked ribs? Something with the cartilage? Sternum-related?
It's not bad enough for me to feel worth seeing a doc so I'm giving it a chance here.

hm ive thrown my back out before doing a moving job for some friends, and i felt chest pains, although it wasnt really a winded feeling. and mine went away after 2 or 3 days. getting to the point, i really have no idea what it could be.

haha thanks anyways. Yeah I'm not winded any more, that only lasted a day.
Oh and this has happened to me before. Twice I think, and always from hitting my back.

That hard of an impact you'll feel for a few days. I've done the same thing and my chest hurt for a while afterward. The impact travels up through your back and into your chest cavity, so your lungs and chest muscles took a hit. I wouldn't worry too much about it man. You should be fine in a day or two. If not, then see a doc.

Yeah it's been 4 days. The back pain has gone and the side rib pain has too, but the middle part is the same. Seeing a doc is probably a good idea.

Thanks guys so far. It might be a little less painful to cough today than yesterday. So maybe it's getting better.
And bump to see if anyone else has had this happen?

I overshot a jump to back a few years back and ended up cracking my sternum and messing up the cartilage that connects my rib cage to my sternum. I'd suggest getting it checked out but it probably won't be anything serious.

If only full tilt made jackets... Damn you full tilt for not allowing me to compensate for how much I suck by getting your products.

i doubt you fractured your sternum just because there is cartilage connecting your ribs to your sternum and its more likely that this costal cartilage is just inflamed from all of that energy being dispersed from the back into itself. But i would see a doctor just to be sure.

i did this exact same thing this year. slammed on my back and after a catscan found out i fractured my manubrium (which is in the sternum area). the doctor said that the hit to my back put enough pressure on my ribs to pull the bone apart. i was out 6 weeks.

shit, i never would have imagined that. for some reason i still think its inflamed cartilage because doesnt seem like the OP's in tons of pain. but go get it checked out because im interested lol.

i did the same thing a few years ago, landed way hard on my back then it was my chest with all the pain...it was hard core pain, though i never went to the doctor and after about 2 weeks i was back to full strength, i settled on it was some sort of muscle tear or something like that, so you can go to the doc...or just load up on ibu profin for a while ha.

Probably a sternum thing or a badly bruised rib. Just because you can't breathe deeply doesn't mean you didn't injure your rib.

Yeah Matt but it's totally bearable except for when I have to cough or sneeze.

With a little advil it's actually a lot better, so I guess that says it's not too bad. I just wanna get back out on the mountain... I'm not stupid though, I'll wait until it's healed so I don't do permanent damage.
I'm feeling like it's something to do with the cartilage and the sternum. I think it would be worse if anything was cracked/broken. Regardless I'll try to make it to the clinic tomorrow and get a quick diagnosis/confirmation.
Thanks everyone.

you should be good then. when mine broke i couldnt even sit up without someone pushing me for a week. i remember my first sneeze though... haha, i thought my chest was going to explode.

I once went to a Chinese doctor because of two herniated disks in my lower back. first thing he asked was if I was having chest pain. aparently chest and lower back are linked and abdomin and upper back/shoulders are linked.

i had the exact same thing in december/january of this season.. i landed on my back and then my buddy was like "hey is your chest okay" (he knew my chest is gonna hurt because he had it too some time ago and he told me he could HEAR it when i fell.... but dont ask me how haha) then i asked him why the hell he asks me about the chest when i clearly landed on my back.. but he was right and it hurt really bad everytime i fell or moved my upper body too hard for 2-3 weeks. it really wasnt nice at all but it should be okay (nothing broken or anything)

and yeah sneezing was a fucking nightmare!

yea man i think its called referred pain, because of damage to nerves the pain could shoot down to the bottom of your leg when the true issue is actually a slipped disc in your low back and the vertebrae are pushing on the spinal cord.

So yeah I saw a doc. He said it wasn't any broken or cracked ribs or a fractured sternum. Something to do with the cartilage/muscle connecting the ribs to the sternum. It got stressed and now it's enflamed. No x-ray but he wasn't concerned at all.
So that's that. I'm out for only like 1-2 weeks and just have to deal with the pain. I'm pretty stoked!

You may want to go get that checked out. I broke my back coming up short on a jump 3 years ago and the the thing that hurt more than my back for the next couple of weeks was my chest. My doctor said that is the spot where spinal injury patients usually have pain, especially if its up in the thoracic region which part of your upper back. I suffered from a compression fracture on my t-7 vertebrae and it really sucked. Normal movement didn't really hurt that bad, but it was just the fact that I couldn't do anything for 8 months. This isn't meant to freak you out or anything, but you should probably go get checked out just to make sure.

Did the same thing 3 days ago snowboarding. Hit a Box some dickhead decided he'd sit on the landing of the box. Stupidly i tried to turn on a box, which just doesnt happen!! slid out, landed on the edge of the box lower half of back and legs on the box, upper back, shoulders, head and neck must of just whipped off the edge of box.Was winded for a good 1/2 hour. And have had chest/back pain since! kills to breath! not lookin forward to a sneeze after reading the comments on here, haha.Thinkin i should see a doc if still in pain tomorow!

Ive done that a few times. last season i ate it on my back real bad and had chest pains and just couldnt breathe well for a week. The doctor said i had bruised my lungs

Sternum could very well be....
i broke mine when i was 16, it's a really annoying pain in the chest, as if they stick a needle through your chest every time you make a wrong move ....

same shit hapened to me when i was a noob...hit a shitty ass jump with my rear mounted twin tips and my twin tips jammed through my back basically..i couldnt cough or sneeze without immmense pain for the next year...never got it checked out..im either fine or destined to be royally fucked
