Labrador or Toggenburg?

or Greek Peak? Just kidding I go to school in Ithaca and last year I made the mistake of buying a season pass to Greek Peak and it was a huge waste of money.

Lab is 56 minutes from me and Togg is like an hour and 5 minutes according to mapquest so basically the same shit. I've never skiied at either but based on how shitty GP was, I plan on buying a season pass at either one of these places.

So just comparing the park which one is better and what are they like?

check out my friends and send a message to Forrest.W asking about the two parks, he grew up skiing them so he could answer your questions I would assume. Tell him I told you to ask him.

fuck lab, ski tog. 99% of labs park crew is snowboarders, so every feature it seems is designed for them, their jumps and glades are decent but rails r always shit and are no where near togs level. Definitly worth driving 5 more mins to toggenburg

Lab was awsome til last year... luckily the year i stopped skiing there haha. Really the only good thing about lab is that everyone once in a while the jumps are awsome but that is really only a couple days a year then the rest of the year they are just a bit better than toggs. I guess i would have to say ski togg because they seem to be moving up while lab is moving down. Theres also more comps at togg, one of the two comps at lab last winter was snowboarders only. Togg as more rails, and they get set up faster. I wish togg was less icy and the park crew fixed stuff more frequently. There are a couple good skiers at togg too.

if you didnt get the idea then i suggest togg even though i learned to ski at lab haha

TOGG for sure. i got almost 50 days in at togg this season and i love the place. word is they're planning on building another double next to the first one; my mom told me some person that works there told her that, hopefully nick can get in here and confirm that.

TOSS is awesome as well, such a fun comp and still after that there are the many other slopestyle and rail jams going down.

plus you can ski with me if you're lucky. and nick mir is basically pro so you can learn a lot from him, a legend.

Just got off the phone with management. New chair is installed, they're giving Lee Cap all the resources he needs to make a sick park this season, just waiting on cold temps to start blowing. Get stoked for a great season at Togg, wish I could be there with you guys!

Lab has built a pretty dope park since forever, 3v3n 10+ years ago when parks weren't everywhere.

I guess they aren't really doin well these days(at least thats what a couple people that ski there said) I haven't been there in like 6+ years. Place used to be ballin though.

They had 40foot booters , big srail, dfd, fdf, like 8 years ago. For a small mountain they def brought the parks hard back in the day.

And Togg has some nice stuff, don't think you could go wrong there. I've never been during peak season though.

Never been to greek and know nothing about it.

I'm a member of labs park crew this year. And during one of our preseason meetings this exact dilemma came up in conversation. You're absolutely right we're all boarders. I do want to switch to skiiing this year but that doesn't change the fact that neither I, nor my co-workers, know how to cater to you, the skier. And so for that very reason I came here. And so I'm asking you or anyone else what is the difference between a rail set up for boards and skis? What is your preference on how a rail, or any feature for that matter, should be set up?

Now keep in mind the park blue prints are already designed and have been for months so we're not going to design your perfect park. However, if you can inform me with what skiers want. We'll do our best to make sure there is a variety of ski and snowboard designed rails, landings, take offs whatever.

TLDR What's the difference between a feature that's designed for a skier and a boarder?

Nothing. This is the most common complaint I've heard about both mountains, ski style features at togg and board style features at lab. Sure the park crews may be made up of mostly skiers or mostly boarders, but the features are not all set up for one or the other. The ONLY features I can think of that are set up almost solely for snowboarders are pole jams. Even then, skiers can still hit them, they just have to get creative. I believe what's being talked about in this thread is urban lips onto flat bars. A lot of skiers don't like that and they see it as more of a snowboard friendly feature, when in reality they are just as easy to hit on skis. That being said, you can't make everyone happy, but by varying the different styles of lips you use onto rail features you'll avoid a lot of complaints from one side or the other...

You can for sure jump higher on a snowboard. So I assume people are talking about the fact that jumps onto the features are either not high enough or don't give you enough pop. I would say snowboarder's prefer urban style lips that are flatter. Skiers like urban style lips but they need to give you enough pop to spin onto the rail.

But its like the person said before me, you can't go wrong with a variety, it just sucks when you can't do any tricks cause the rails are too high to get onto, but you also don't want ride ons or something that you have to hit super slowly or it will boost you over half the rail.

nice big, wide, tall but not too tall lips. i don't ski at lab really at all but normally when i think "that would be so much easier for a snowboard" it's because the lip is 2 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

I personally like a lip to come to about 75% of the height of the rail with a smooth, longer tranny giving an accessible pop for some sort of trick variation onto the rail.

http://carinthiaparks.com/about/the-gulch/

To the Lab park builder, check out the tranny on the wall ride, oil tank, flat bar etc. Personally, I feel like Mount Snow does everything pretty on point, and in comparison, Togg will get you closer to that feel

Figured these features would come up. I've seen them and to be honest they are extremely well built and I was very impressed. With that being said, my opinion, it's all hype. Yes, they're awesome features but it doesn't mean shit if we can't build them the way the public wants them. Or maintain them to that standard for the duration of the season. Therefore, I thank you all for the help and especially for those that contributed the pictures.

I've been in contact with my manager most of the day today and we're both really excited about your guys input. We're doing our best this year to make labs park what it used to be. Bringing back some old features and bringing in the new. And even though my bosses may not agree i'll admit it togg recently has been the better venue; as far as park goes anyway. Yes, I'm biased.

But with that bias I won't brag or talk down on any of the other local mountains. We have an all new park crew, features, and for the first time want to hear your input. We recognize our previous mistakes and assuming things go in our favor: weather, management, insurance. We will provide you with an amazing experience. All I ask is that just once this season you give us a chance and decide for yourself.

Until then hope, pray, beg or sacrifice small animals for some fucking snow!

quality, truthful, post. gonna try to make some lab trips this year, whether it be for rail jams or whatever. i'll agree you guys have us beat outside the park, as togg is shit all mountain skiing. honestly i ski togg since it's way close to me and therefore more convenient, as well as my friends go there. but hey, get a super awesome park and force me to switch.

"Togg has more rails, and they get set up faster."

Our goal this year, weather permitting, will easily double to triple the amount of features we had last year. An easy feat when there was barely anything up, I know. The point is there will be quite a few.

As for togg setting up faster, this is true and will most likely remain so. Although it is mine and my coworkers, the park is not labs main concern. Not to say they don't care but with the economy the way it is and more recently the weather. And it being that our park hasn't brought in much money lately. Lab can't depend on the park as easily as togg can. Therefore, they depend on NASTAR. It's a constant, always has been always will be. Which is why the triple chair is the first area to receive snow every year. But as soon as management gives us the go ahead we will put up as much as we possibly can as fast as we possibly can WITHOUT sacrificing quality.

Yes, and there are reasons for this. Tog has their way of doing things and lab has theirs as well. Both tog and lab run their businesses in their own manner. And both owners feel justified in the prices they set.

I can't speak for Togg nor will I even pretend I know the first thing as to how they run their operation. However, Lab has chosen this price because of the way they run their operation. Which includes grooming every trail every single night before opening in the am. 250 square acres of 22 trails really adds up with a frequency that high. But this and many other reasons unfortunately results in 45 dollar lift tickets. So you're right it is cheaper to go to togg. But plenty of people still choose to go to lab and I'm sure just as many(if not more) still choose togg. People have their reasons for going to both venues. Which brings me to my point. Since this is your thread. My opinion, try both places. Decide for yourself. Which ever you decide, awesome! Either way as long as you're riding who really cares where it is?

Btw, at the risk of highjacking this thread if anyone else still has any opinions on the question I asked earlier or even suggestions to better labs park feel free to let me know. As long as it's constructive and doesn't turn into a bitch fest or pissing contest, I'd be thrilled to hear it!

This thread has become surprisingly refreshing. To wembley, I applaud

your mature approach to the competitive nature of the debate. I have ran

Togg's park for the past 6 years, but I've moved out to Breck for the

winter. There has always been an incredibly hostile competition between

the two parks and their riders. Healthy competition is great, but the

hostile relationship isn't necessary. The more quality parks we can

supply in central new york, the better it will be for everyone. With that said, I've left the

park in excellent hands and I hope they blow you guys out of the water.

hahaha joking aside, I hope everyone has a great season out there, can't wait to see some edits to see

what both mountains come up with! Cheers.

just want to add to this. i was there at lab today (OPENING DAY OMG LOLZ) and they had an up box and a rainbow box set up. not bad for day 1, considering togg isn't even open yet. the landings and lips were taking a beating, but i give credit to their park crew, they were there several times fixing them with shovels, trying to pack manmade snow.

fun day.

Glad you had a good time. But to be honest there was no landing more of a hole. And as for lips we didn't really bother because the snow cat took em out after we started building. Plus the boss said not to because we were only going to take them out tonight. So we half assed it.

But I'm glad you had a good time. And I assure you we'll take a much more serious approach when the features will be more permanent. Come back again tomorrow! Snow making started around 5 and is gonna go all night. And park crew is headin up early tomorrow to get those boxes back up. And if management lets us maybe even a couple more but I wouldn't get my hopes up for that.

who were you/ what were you wearing? i was in white saga pants with the black thermal.

and to the above post, i can't make it tomorrow due to other sunday obligations, but like the other guy said i'm sure a flat rail would be so appreciated. i was craving one today.

lol that's how they have always done it. I don't think the dog house has EVER moved since it was placed there in like 06.

greek was also open a month longer last yr. i work at lab, lucked out and got a pass to greek at the end of the season.

So what's the word back in CNY? What does everyone have set up at the moment? Anyone throwing down particularly hard already? I hear the weather finally turned for you guys, sounds like good news all around!

Yea whats looking good right now? I'll be heading back to Cortland in a week or two and definitely want to try and get out a few times. Also I don't have many friends at school who ski, and those who do don't ski park so if anybody would wanna ride or do laps with me or something shoot me a pm.

well, not exactly on the weather part. it was 45 for the past two days, and the upcoming forecast shows two more days in the forties this week, although we should be good after thursday.

FOR TOGGENBURG:

still no snow blown on 8, although there is some on trail 12 i believe it is, which is taken to get to 8.

3 feature line there, up down box, short cannon style rail to hip, and then a flat box. then under the double there is a hike only 25 foot table next to the treeline towards the triple. a fun setup right now, the flat box is prime. just wish they'd made the jump lappable. i mean you can lap it but it means riding through rocks and mud to get to it from main.

source: 9 days skiing at togg already this year, that's what the setup was yesterday.

someone from lab will have to fill us in on their park and shiz.

BTW nick, apparently this year ski patrol are beginning to enforce a no inverts rule. WTF IS THIS

let me know when you're there, i would love to meet the one and only abortionator in real life. sucks too cause i just learned fronts, backies and misties.

here it is. supposedly a 25. maybe a few feet shorter than that, but you can easily take it ten to fifteen past knuckle. hike only at the moment.

I seriously love invert wars at mountains, especially if I just have a day pass. Doesn't look like I'm gonna make it many place this season. I won't be riding for a while and whatever season I get will prolly end back in nh.

I've always liked lab though, havent been in like 6 years but that place had some of the first big jumps I ever hit back in the day. Hopefully it's still legit. They used to build some pretty awesome shit for the time. I remember ski patrollers filming corks boosting out of the pipe 10 years ago.

Toggs good shit too though

I'll make a phone call to see what's going on with this. In the past it's been a "Inverts Not Recommended" policy per the insurance company. Ski Patrol tends to make policies without taking them through the proper channels sometimes, I'm guessing this is just another one of those cases. Can't blame them, their job is to try and keep everyone safe, banning inverts is just one way they're trying to do so...

Yeah just got off the phone. Just as suspected, the patrol put this policy into place without consulting the proper departments. I've been told it will be dealt with, but be patient. If you are approached by patrol for this reason, stay calm and be polite. Simply state that you've been told by management that the policy is not in effect due to insurance reasons and suggest that they go speak with Cyndy in the office if they need explanation. Freaking out on them and telling them they don't know what's going on is not going to help anyone. Hope this clears things up!

thanks a bunch nick, haha still keeping it real 2,000 miles away. i mean the one time i was apparently yelled at was by a patroller on the lift while i had headphones in. didn't even know i was yelled at until my buds told me at the top of the hike haha. other than that, haven't encountered another patroller yelling at me personally. will keep that in mind though and keep everything nice and polite.

btw if any NS'ers are ever at togg post in this thread or PM me, we can meet up and hike a bit or take some laps. the more the merrier in the fabius crew
