but seriously, that is a pretty sick idea.
 
I think that is a great idea. But it probably wont work,the cellphone companies make too much money making products designed to break down over time.
 
Am I the only one who cant stand that type of British accent? Normal British accents don't bother me but every time I hear this guy's voice I just want shove a giant dildo in my ears.
 
ill actually buy a smartphone if this comes to be. awesome idea, great solution to a problem people dont even know exists. get it together
 
Great idea. It reminds me of people who build their own computers and customize it to be exactly the specs they want for what they are doing on it. Upgrade more later, etc. If this goes into production, the phone will officially become a computer in my eyes.
 
I'm not an engineer, but this concept seems like a nightmare to design. Four plugs to connect a new processor and boom faster phone? Ya that's not how it works at all.

yeah it works, i have a windows and linux processor along with all my video games and movies set to an external drive and it runs as fast if it was not on my mac.
 
Oh god, engineering nightmare. Clearly the brain child of a design student and not anyone with technological experience

just a few problems I see off the bat-

1- System and component drivers

2- Electric interference over the circuits

3- Lack of connectivity, 4 copper prongs aint gonna cut it

 
This isn't the problem. These things can be designed around. The problem is that this concept removes the capability of Apple to create a new version of the iPhone every 8 months that people need to drop another $700 on. Same for every other mobile company. That's why this won't happen.
 
No. You are 100% wrong. This technology is NONEXISTENT. We DO NOT have modular personal electronics for a reason.

I didnt even bother to mention the size and weight this thing would be, a modular breadboard is not something made to be slim, rather for testing and designing.

Your little apple comment proves how ignorant you are towards the technology sector. They updated/replaced their flagship phone with a much more improved product without raising the price.

You realize a processor needs to know about all the components its running right? You cant just plug a battery in to the same place as the camera was and expect it to work, hell youd fry the entire circuit.

But of course in youre little world, you just attach another "Speed Blok" when your phone lows down and everything is all good.
 
Not sure if you were trying to be sarcastic in the sense that I should have said "device" or "component" drivers, or actually agreeing with me.

But in any case, I am an Agri/Bio Engineering student with a focus in Technical Systems Management- this phone is a prime example of a system**, so I think I have a pretty good background to be dismissing this as fantasy.

Cellphones are the most technologically advance consumer product out there, and companies spend countless dollars creating slim, sleek, high performance, stable and easy to use products.

In a greater sense, I would even doubt its economic feasibility, as no companies would be willing to make their components available on others platforms. The individual manufactures would also need to design, test, produce, troubleshoot, offer support, package, retail, advertise, print, approve etc. EVERY SINGLE NEW BLOK.

also, 99%+ of consumers buy computers rather then build their own. What makes this different?

hahha Im just saying, given our current position this isnt going to happen anytime soon. We will, but not any time soon. Once we master nano-transistor technology we'll be on the path towards this kind of thing. That being said, once we master nano tech in general.... shit going to get reallllll weird real quick
 
You can already do all of that shit. Yes, they could make it easier to do but then they wouldn't make as much money.

Uh, You're a moron apparently. Or just another engineering student who can't read thoughtfully. I am saying it doesn't matter if the technology exists, it doesn't matter if they could easily develop this in under a year. They will not. I don't care what you and your professed expertise (way to brag about what you went to school for by the way) have to say about this because the actual technical details associated with the project are irrelevant. You keep talking about the practical difficulties in building the thing. It doesn't even get that far: the concept is dead on arrival.

The buzzphrase was used above: planned obsolescence. The bottom line for companies producing cell phones is that they make far more more money selling you five phones in five years instead of one or two. It's a simple fact of marketing that consumers are considerably more willing to pay a smaller amount multiple times than a larger amount fewer times. Individual, larger outlays of cash dissuade consumers. Consequently, the industry will continue to produce phones on the basis that you will replace your phone every year or two. It's no-brainer profit maximization.

Consequently, the "electronic waste" that this concept is designed to diminish is a necessary, unavoidable side effect of literally everyone's business model in the sector: they WANT you to throw away your old electronics when only one component is broken, because they WANT to be able to sell you the whole new phone. Why on Earth would they stop doing that when it's working so well for them? Particularly, why would they do that in favour of a product concept that will inevitably make them LESS money, given that a replacement part is inevitably going to cost less than a whole new phone would?

Apple was just one example because of the obvious-to-everyone hype that occurs every time a new generation of one of their products comes out, but this is nothing new and nothing that's particular to one company in this industry.
 
instead of dropping serious cash into reinventing the phone, just refurbish the preexisting ones? distinction without a difference. this shit doesnt have legs
 
exactly. no one will keep their phoneblok forever...besides, the industry is highly competitive and ever-changing. this guy should focus on refurbishing phones cause he'll never achieve a monopoly. cash flow speaks to mega corporations; therefore, this project is contingent on the propensity in which users update their device's "blocks." aside from the battery, i dont see it. fuck, we dont even do this for computers..
