Knee Pain

Skiing today and did exactly what you shouldn't do when falling. Landed backseat, planted one leg, twisted it and felt a pop. 8 hours later, no swelling, just pretty bad pain when walking and such. No real pain when sitting down, maybe a slight ache once in awhile. There are two bumps about a 1/2 inch apart right below my knee cap that hurt if you push on them. Going to make an appointment because I really don't feel like sitting in urgent care for half a day. Doubtful, but does anyone know what it might be?

pop is not a good sign. Do you still have full range of motion?

I just tore my ACL and was able to walk on it, put pressure on it and all that. But just couldn't bend it much. Heard the pop as well.

go to your appointment. it sucks not knowing whats wrong with your knee, but dr. ns got his phd in armchair doctorology from tijuana community college and doesn't know shit. the doc will tell you what he can, but an MRI is really the only way to confirm what exactly is wrong in your knee. Good luck dude, knee injuries suck, hopefully its something minor

Don't get an MRI. Any good doctor should be able to tell what's wrong without one. Waste of money completely.

I really hope for you that this isn't it, but when my dad tore his acl, he felt a pop and some pain afterwards and no swelling. He didn't go to the doctor and kept walking on it and went back skiing a day or two later. He fell again and that hurt a lot. Once he got to the doc, he said that he must have tore it like 50% the first time and tore it completely the second and had to get an operation.

So take it super easy, don't go skiing, ice it cos that always helps and pray that the doc will say that it's something else.

On a positive note, my brother had similar issues earlier this season. Wound up being tendonitis from overuse and the doctor gave him a brace that eases the pain when skiing. Besides that, just icing a few times daily. He was nervous to go to the doctor fearing the worst but the news was actually not bad.

tl;dr Hopefully doc has good news!

Not true... My doctor thought nothing was wrong but had me get one to be sure. Turns out I tore my medial meniscus. The tests he did for meniscus came back negative, but the MRI found it.

my sister cased a jump and did her meniscus in and it sounds a lot like your deal. Pain when she walked/skied but no swelling.

Patella tendon/MCL is what it sounds like. Hopefully not torn though.

Go see an orthopedist, depending on your insurance requirements the doc may have them X-ray you first (which won't help much since it's likely a tissue damage thing) and then after that's confirmed they'll order an MRI for you which will definitively confirm or deny whether something serious is going on in there. Or if your insurance allows it, hopefully they can skip right to an MRI and not waste anybody's time.

good luck, let us know what happens

oh, and I am certainly no doctor at all, but I have had ACL/MCL reconstructive surgery so unfortunately I've been through the process. Hoping that's not the case for you though

twist and pop is most commonly acl. there's a few orthopedic tests you can do (look up anterior drawer test/lachman's test).

generally an mri won't be done unless there's issues in the recovery. they're super expensive and most of the time you just need to rest ice compress and elevate (RICE) for 6 weeks (unless it's completely torn).

if you go to an ER they'll most likely just do an xray to make sure there's not avulsion fracture, then wrap it up and give you anti-inflammatory meds, with a referral to ortho. might as well try to cut out the middleman, save some loot, and see an orthopedist if possible.

also, like the other guy said, if you continue to ski on it, you could completely tear it and then you're fucked

this happened to my friend in football. theres a little sack of goo and puss and stuff in between your knee cap and your leg bone. if you pop it, it can hurt to move because that sack prevents your kneecap from grinding against your leg. maybe thats it. anyways good luck man

Holy wrong batman, this is possibly some of the worst advice I have ever heard. An MRI is one of very few ways that you can tell FOR SURE if something is wrong. I tore my labrum in my hip and the doctors just thought that it was the strained hip flexor and quad that were causing me pain. Went and got an MRI and BAM I tore my labrum. Fun shit.

Bullshit man. Terrible advice. If you insurance can cover the MRI get it. Even if not it probably will be worth it to know for sure. My doctor said it might be a slight MCL tear, turned out to be full ACL tear.

mri is the most accurate way to tell and even then they can't be sure until they actually open up your knee

when I hurt my knee

-ski patrol told me I was fine

-ER told me I'd be fine in a few weeks

-orthopaedic surgeon told me I'd torn my ACL and strained MCL

-MRI showed torn ACL, strained MCL, strained PCL and possible meniscus damage

then when I had the surgery they told me afterwards that my meniscus ended up being busted as fuck on both sides. knees are a fuckin mystery man.

as for op: doesn't sound like an acl tear but you probably tore something if you heard/felt a pop so go getcha self examined

Yeah I think I may have tore my acl. After the last time I skied its been hurting when getting up, walking up stairs and running. I don't know what to do honestly because theres a comp tomorrow that I want to go to. Could anyone tell me what I should do to temperately heal it?

definitely get it looked by a professional. I tore mine the other day, and two doctors said that my knee seemed OK, and i probably just strained a muscle. MRI came back with a bone bruise, torn ACL, and possibly torn meniscus.

and to the guy asking if he should go to a comp with a torn ACL, i'd say no. you just risk tearing so much more in your knee and making recovery that much worse

DO NOT DO ANY STRENUOUS ACTIVITY, I went to a lacrosse camp over the summer against my doctor's advice and my meniscus became much more torn. Do not fuck around with injuries. There is no way in hell that you will be able to "temperately" (I expect you mean temporarily) heal it. Any activity is only going to make it worse. Get on crutches and rest it as much as possible. Ice at least 6 times a day for 20 minutes at a time. Buy a compression sleeve and wear it all the time. Keep it elevated above your heart as much as you can.

Very untrue, I went to a knee specialist and even when he did the Lachmans test it was inconclusive. MRI showed a tear

you can't "temporarily heal" an acl. but it sounds like you're young and naïve and won't listen to any reasonable advice. lol

if you think you may have torn your acl then entering a comp is the worst thing you can do for it.but if one of your parents is a doctor then maybe they'll give you a cortisone shot or something, but it wont help.

I honestly don't think its an acl tear because both of my knees are in nearly the same amount of pain and it would be hard to believe that i tore both

Your name has the word troll in it so I don't know why I'm responding other than my need to help people who don't know how to help themselves. If your knee is injured in any way, doing any activity that causes it pain is only going to make it worse.Do not fucking go skiing unless you want to not be able to ski in the future. You will hurt it more and you will have more problems down the long run.

First off, its fat-rolls-N-fat-hoes, not fa-troll-N-fat-hoes (Idk how you could read my name that way it would make sense). And I'm going to be watching it not competing anymore, I'm not that stupid.

I also asked what I should do to heal it not your input against my decision, but it is America so I guess you do have that right.

R.I.C.E.S Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Support. Ice as much as you can, 20 minutes at a time, stay off of it as much as you can, elevate it above your heart as much as you can, support it with a compression wrap. Get an MRI, they will tell you what's wrong within two days. If you need surgery, you will get surgery, if you need Physical Therapy, they will sign you up for PT appointments. There they will give you exercises to strengthen your leg.

Strengthening your quad and hamstring has proven to help prevent major knee injuries. So after this situation has passed, start lifting legs, run more, do everything you can to get your legs stronger. You will be sore, and it will suck dick but it must happen if you want to be able to any physical activity which involves your legs.

i had exactly the same thing happen to me, just without the two bumps. full range of motion, no pain, no swelling, even kept skiing that day and the rest of the season...

it was a blown acl and meniscus

It really depends on how strong your legs are at the time of the injury. One of the athletic trainer's I worked with during the first semester this year didn't have an ACL in his right knee. If your muscles surrounding your knee are strong enough they can support the knee without the ACL. Of course it will feel weaker but it is possible to do stuff without the ACL. He played football for two more years then went into school for athletic training where he learned that he had torn his ACL completely. If he does not continue to work out his legs, his knee wouldn't have enough support and he would have a ton of trouble doing normal activites. The body is capable of amazing things when it's at top performance.

i was kinda the same. i was able to keep skiing at essentially the same level (cut back on big jumps though) for 3 months after, but it definitely felt weaker and would hurt after a while. ski patrol said my acl felt intact and my first ortho i went to said he thought my meniscus was torn, but my acl appeared fine. it wasnt until a mri that anybody actually knew it was torn

i was the same way. my dad is a doctor, and said that it did not seem like my ACL was torn from the tests, just swelling from a sprain or a muscle pull. i went to see my actual doctor who said the same thing, but since i am going back to college tomorrow they were able to push me through for an MRI and the MRI came back with a fully torn ACL.

Sounds familiar. When I tore my ACL last season I went to a emergency clinic thing and they're like yeah you sprained your knee, but see an orthopedic surgeon to be sure. After a week or so I got an MRI and sure enough, my ACL was in 2 pieces.

yeah i skied a few runs on it after i fell and heard the pop and all that. it felt OK, just when i would make super deep turns it would like buckle in on itself

same thing happened to me and they told me it was a sprain until i got an mri 2 months later and found out i tore my acl

I have seen people ski after tearing their ACL if it hurts kind of bad and hasn't been getting better go the to doctors.

I crashed supper hard one time on my head/neck and my back popped so loud and it hurt like a bitch at first. I felt a crunch and and I though my back might have been fucked. Eventually the pain was manageable after 10 minutes so I got up and skied the rest of the day just fine. So a pop doesn't mean something tore or broke necessarily, but it would be a good idea to get it checked out if its bothersome.
