Knee pain after running. halp?

i used to do track and cross country, and every day after a long run my knees would start to hurt. Sometimes so much that i had trouble walking down/up stairs. it was a bad aching pain in the joint. even now sometimes they get sore, or some tendon directly on the left or right side hurts. Im worried about hurting them this summer at hood. anyone know of any good strengthening exorcises, or know what is wrong with my knees

I think every runner gets knee pain sometime during their career, but if its that bad and still aches, then definitely go see a doctor / physical trainer. Other than that, maybe ice it every day. I think those bands that go below the kneecap might help, or some other brace / support. Hope it gets better!

what really sucks is when you tear your ACL right before ski season starts then you cant ski that whole year meaning you have to wait to next year to do anything and then you gotta do at least three months of physical therapy and then buy an 800 dollar "over the counter" not customized knee brace to wear when you ski or do anything haha so i can see where your coming from. no pain no game.

it's likely that it is just some tendinitis, however, it could be a minor tear in your lateral meniscus. which is a minor surgery with little recoup time (a few weeks) however, don't be a moron, go see an orthopedic surgeon get an MRI done, that is the only way to tell for sure

i definitely feel your pain. I've had knee problems for the last 6 or 7 years. And I tore my ACL and MCL about a year and a half ago. A lot of my problems come from being an active girl so I won't bother you with that stuff haha. But I did come out of this past ski season skiing 4 days a week and and it really wore out my knees and I had some pretty bad tendontis. So I'd say thats what it sounds a lot like you may be suffering from. Especially if your pain is on the lateral sides of your knees like you say. You should go see a doctor just to rule out more serious problems, but if it is tendonitis the doctor will probably suggest that you do some sort of physical therapy to learn what sort of strengthening exercises you should be doing. While you are building muscle by running/skiing whatever, your knees really need to be adequately supported by the surrounding muscles and sometimes the activity itself isn't enough to build this muscle. I've had a lot of experience/done a lot of research on knee problems so if you have any questions just let me know. I may be able to help you out.

pretty much do any exercise that will really beef up your hamstrings and quads, it will yield additional support to your knees

i have the exact same thing. what works for me is special stretches and dr scholls knee pain insoles. ill give you a list of wat stretches 2 do, but pm me if u want them. also, always ice ur knees after they feel pain

if you have recently grown, than i wouldnt be worried, growth spurts are whats causing the pain, everytime the barometer has a change, your joints that have been A. injured, or B. have recently grown, will be sore... and as for running in general its always very tough on your knees and shins, the ground really beats them up from a constant stop hit go motion.... i would take up biking if i were you, much more healthy for your joints and body

agreed. i mountain bike instead of running but not everybody has access to that. biking is really good for strengthening your knees though. you can also learn to run more efficiently. my dad used to be a professional runner and was telling me how most people run in a way that's incredibly hard on their joints. look into taking some herbs/supplements that are good for joints/circulation such as Omega-3 if you can afford it. how old are you though? you're probably just having growing pains.

How old are you? if you are still growing, and you see a bump on your knee right below the patella (kneecap) it could be Osgood's Schlatter, which means your bones are growing faster than your muscles, so your tendons are super tight there, and a large protuberance (bump) grows on the area.

You could also have torn up your meniscii by running a lot and overusing.

i have a problem were my knee cap doenst slide right over the knee causing me to have knee pain not really when i run but during the winter it kills me from high impacts and shit really kill it and the pain stops in like may

boy u better hope its not that
had to quit skiing competitively for two years cause i had it so bad, it really sucks
i still kinda have it in one knee, and the bumps below usually stay for a few years after its gone.

i had knee pain when i was little, i think i grew out of it. Ice those suckers after a hot shower/bath. Take a while off if they really hurt

this guy's right on with the osgood schlatter's. i had that for a couple years. but ice and stretching helped a lot, do that before you run, and heat it after.

i used to get that but i grew out of it. i dont know how old you are but it sounds like the same stuff that was happening to me

also a thing called patella femoral syndrome, where my cartilidge in the back of my knee is worn down and rough and when my patella slides it rubs it the wrong way, literatlly. i have it in both my knees. it affected all my muscles in my legs after i would run my knees would swell and have sharp pains. had to go to physical therapy for a while, they still hurt sometimes but are better from streching. agree with whoever said stretch the surrounding muscles, quads, hams, calfs. also ice. ice. ice. but if its pretty bad i recommend getting that checked out with your doctor

hay man i had huge issues with the same problem your having it got so bad that i couldnt run i saw a specialist about it and he recommended i go to the gym and strengthen my quads ham strings and calves for they support the knee and enable it to track properly. i though this was a little strange for i thought my muscles would have easily been strong enough due to running but strength training in the gym has done the job and im now able to 7 km and feel fine afterwards hope this helps you in some way lars

it might be osgoods, wich would suck because i go to mt hood in 4 days. I was reading up on it and it says if yu do a lot of running during a major growth spurt it can happen, and i was doing 3+ miles a day during mine. It mostly happend in the winter though so i might be ok now. and i do have very tight muscels in my thigh. although some website did say that it is just painful, and will not affect knee fuction. to anyone that has had this, can you give me some advice for mt hood. oh and im sorry NS but i am a snowboarder (good for me, less work on my knees)

get out we dont take your kind!

but for real my style is more of a pounding right into the terrain rather than flowing with it, so due to that i get wicked bad shin bang and knee soreness, once it got to be unbearable i started flow with the terrain and although its not as much fun, it didnt hur... also when hitting jumps try to land as smooth as possible its an obvious statement but it really does help

Just stretch a lot, even before skiing and everything. Just stretch the piss out of you hamstrings and stuff. It helps me so much.

dude my mum an i doo lots of running i suggest u check ur running shoes ..... i had the same problem a while ago but my doctor gave me some good running shoes to buy and they helped loads...... (15km and further) ......

asics and saucony are really good companies ... even though they are rlly expencive they are worth the money.

i had the same problems, turns out i had worn down my cartilage in my knees that i needed surgery, same with my pops.

If it is joint pain i suggests taking fish oil pills. They actually help to loosen the joints, no lie. They are like 20$ a bottle but are worth every penny. Just a suggestion, gl

you probably have tendonitis in your knee like me. do exercises to strengthen the quads and shin muscles, and do them often. it will keep the joint from getting fucked up

if you stop doing these the pain will come back.

go to the library/bookstore, find a book on strength training, and write down 1 or 2 exercises out of it for each part of the leg, or photocopy it.

oshgood's slaughter. i had that when i was about 9-12 or so. i also had severs disease which is the exact same thing, but in your ankles. i had that way worse. it sucks a lot

i didn't read everyone's reply so i don't know if this has already been posted.  I've had the same problem intermitienly during my running career.  Here's what I've done:

1.  start taking glucosamine supplements.

2.  Ice your knee.  10 min on-10 min off-10 min on.  This might make it seem worse for a  bit but it helped me in the long run.

3.  strectch your quads.  make sure the muscles supporting your knee have warmed up.  don't stretch a lot 'cause this seems to make it worse, just do casual warm ups.
