Vermont town wants to secede, join New Hampshire

Killington, Vermont-AP -- Next time you visit the popular ski resort of Killington, Vermont, it could be in New Hampshire.

Officials in Killington want the town to secede from Vermont and join the neighboring state because of a dispute over taxes. They say the town's restaurants, inns and other businesses rake in ten (m) million dollars a year for the state -- but gets just a (m) million dollars of state aid in return.

Then there's the property tax imposed in 1997 to fund schools. The town says the state's method of assessing local properties is 'arbitrary and capricious.' The state Supreme Court agrees.

Local leaders want to put the secession idea before voters in March.

Killington has a population of just over a thousand people. It lies just 25 miles west of New Hampshire, which has no income tax or sales tax.

its stupid tho cuz killy probly rakes in so much cash in tourism for vermont. i would think that they would treat the town better cuz loosing killingtons probly gonna hurt there tourism shit.

Why would people stop going to killy if it changed which state it is technically in? If it changes to NH, it wouldn't make me decide to not go anymore, and to go to okemo instead....

hey if they do seceed..would it say you are now entering new hampshire when u were going into killy, then you are now entering vermont, then if u keep going youd be entering new hampshire again?

i think that would fuck up alot of unsuspecting tourists.
