Forecast back there and rest of New England looks pretty bleak. Especially for the World Cup at Killy. As of now doesn't look like they will pull it off unless the forecast really swings. Bummer because that was a big early season draw and press coverage.
Dumb on World Cup for hosting that even at that time of year at that location. Someone's pockets were greased in that deal...

Last year it worked out pretty well, when it comes to the World Cup we still have a lot of time. Looking at the live cams they started this morning and it looks like they have a lot so far. They really only need a couple of days of snowmaking and somewhat consistent tempatures.

I'm surprised they didnt open yet. Aren't they suppose to open in likeJuly and be first in the east?

I know exactly how fast they can get production up and going. It's easy to get TTB and a few lifts open when it's 20* for 7 days.
But it's November. And it's warm. And it's the east coast. And the World Cup has no business being there in November.

However, forecasts are only available for the base so it is hard to predict how much snow they can crank out. Killington developed a special snowgun that is fairly efficient in marginal temperatures, so I think they will be opening north ridge fairly soon. And superstar or whatever trail the course is on has all new and super efficient tower snow guns on it. Once it gets cold enough to make snow on the whole trail, they will be able to make a giant base on it very quickly. The trail has a snowgun like every 1-2 feet. Its insane. Killington easily has a top 5 snowmaking team plus equipment in the country. Their capacity is crazy.

the FIS is also giving them like all of the money in the world to do the world cup shit, they could probably have the course ready in 2-3 days of snowmaking and the race still isn't even 3 weeks from now.
Because of all the FIS $$$ they have equipment that can make snow up to 36 degrees as well. It would ski like shit but the point is that they can build the base and then cover it with something thats actually skiable in even less time.

They have about 150 hydrants up that skier left of that trail but you can only push some much water through that 12" pipe or whatever diameter they have. That limits water.
You sound smart and seem to know some snowmaking stuff. But all I was trying to say is it's fucking dumb to have the World Cup that time of year in that location. I've worked with All those fis, Olympic ski and local ski people building training runs for them and to do it in that location that time of year would fucking suck

However, I have no idea about some stuff like why you angle the guns a certain angle (hang time to aid in freezing process?) or how the plumbing works. I get there is a pump and all of that, but where does the circut end? Obviously you can’t just pump water up a hill without a place to relieve the pressure. Where does the water go when the hydrants aren’t open? It would be a fun time to work snowmaking at a mountain and learn all of this stuff but I am still just a senior in high school and plan on going into engineering. Ain’t nobody got time for night shifts
I spent a good amount of time in the mountain operations side of the ski business. I had lots of write ups and presentations i used to give. I did stuff from Nsaa presentations to high school kids to employees haha. I should re do some of them and put them out there. It's fun info for people that just don't know or want to know the back side of ski operations.
Glad I'm not in the business anymore but I do miss it sometimes.
