Wis. Student Sues to End Summer Homework

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A student whose vacation plans were spoiled has sued to end summer homework in Wisconsin, claiming it creates an unfair workload and unnecessary stress.

Peer Larson, 17, had lined up a dream camp counselor job last June, but honors pre-calculus homework turned his summer into a headache.

``It didn't completely ruin my summer, but it did give me a lot of undue stress both at home and at work,'' the high school junior said Thursday. ``I just didn't have the energy or the time for it.''

Larson and his father sued in Milwaukee County Circuit Court seeking the end of summer homework across the state. They argue that homework shouldn't be required after the required 180-day school year is over.

``These students are still children, yet they are subjected to increasing pressure to perform to ever-higher standards in numerous theaters,'' the suit said.

School administrators have told the family that honors courses require some summer work.

Whitnall School Superintendent Karen Petric told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the district did its best to address the Larsons' concerns.

``I strongly believe the district acted appropriately and didn't do anything wrong,'' she said. ``Court is not the place to solve it.''

While students will probably root for the Larsons, lawyers contacted Thursday questioned the suit's legal grounds. Larson and his son had acted as their own legal counsel.

``This is the sort of thing that has been traditionally handled by school boards,'' said attorney Thomas R. Schrimpf. Another attorney, Timothy Baldwin, predicted the case would be dismissed.

The Jan. 10 lawsuit names a math teacher, three school administrators and the state's superintendent of public instruction. Wisconsin's attorney general's office will assign a lawyer to respond to the suit, said spokesman Brian Rieselman.

Reminds me of the time that dude sued Fear Factor because as he was flipping through a channels, he saw something nasty and it made him feel dizzy and he got up and walked into a door and hurt himself.

for AP and honors classes it is important so that when school starts they don't have to waste time reviewing stuff from previous classes... i don't really mind it and i usually wait until the last two/three weeks of summer to do it, and even then i only spend an hour a day reviewing... i remember this year we had a hundred point test the first day back in AP bio...

The stupid thing, i believe, is their school system. They should put a bit more emphasis on some stuff. At least that's what I thought in Maine. And, by the way, american schools are the exact same thing as they picture in hollywood movies!

anathema, I've met many of millionaires and various extremely successful people who only know basic math. And by basic math I mean addition, subtraction, dividing, and multiplication. That's it.

Personally, that's all I care about. Any physics/calculus does not concern me.

how incredibly lame! sorry, but NO CLASS IN US highschools is even challenging, let alone stressful...I amintained a 99 average taking a mix of senior and junior classes after only 2 years of pretty poor English education in an astern European country

i remember a girl I know had to do a bit of work in summer for one of her year 12 subjects (our last year of school here). can't remember what it was though. the lawyers aren't supporting the kid (questioning the legal grounds) because he decided to represent himself and not give the work to a real lawyer, haha

out of 50 countries tested the United States School system was ranked 48 out of 50. already not very good at educating their kids and people are trying to take away an advantage that the smarter kids have.

Yeeeeep, this is ridiculous. He has ALL SUMMER to do this work. If he can't handle the summer homework, then he has no reason to be enrolled in the class in the first place. The work he gets during the school year will be much harder.

Personally, I liked having the summer homework for my Honors and AP classes. It enabled me to learn more throughout the rest of the school year and kept the teachers from having to reteach the students things from previous years to understand the REAL material for the course.

hah im in honors pre-calc and its... well interesting because i dont really pay attention in class and have to learn all the shit from the book. because i took honors algebra II last year i got in fine, but a bunch of kids who took normal algebra II had to take summer courses to get in. they got pissed about that

i think summer work is good, excessive homework during the school year is pure bullshit though.
 
never thought id see someone sue a teacher cuz of homework. why doesnt he just deal with the fact that he is smart and do it. or he could just drop to a lower class
 
let me be the first to have a firsthand view on this situation. My school district here could buy the entire Milwaukee Public School District. Thats how broke they are. Its not worth suing them.
