Kicking Horse being sold to RCR

I've seen the plans, they look better for the core skiers than you'd think. New lift from gondi base to stairway replacing pioneer and either a mid station for the eagle's eye or a new lift servicing the upper mountain, both apparently in the next few years. Plus the real estate development and shit that you'd expect from RCR, but if it pays the bills I don't mind so much.

I've heard they've already purchased the new lift from Poma that is to replace Pioneer. As for a mid station on the Gondy, it's too old, and can't be done. With the purchase though, management is going to get shaken up, and it's really unfortunate. My old team manager/KH events manager has quit due to the purchase from RCR, which I find crappy. And I also really hope that they put money into a new bridge, which I've heard has to happen if another hotel goes in.

That's not Jordan that's quitting, is it? Because that would really blow.

And honestly, I'm not that worried about any changes to the lifts or village, and I'm not well aquainted with management, so while I know they're doing a decent job now, I'm not sure I'll miss them too much.

What I am worried about though is RCR's idiotic risk management. I'm fine with transciever gates on the hikes and better funded avy control, but get into closing terrain and/or a closed ropes policy and I'm going to be pissed. This is first and foremost a big mountain skiers resort and I'd hate to lose that so that Shithead McGoon from Toronto can safely power plow anything on the mountain.

Also, was it you that came up to me on the hill and asked about the tips on my skis today?

Yee son, Jordan left. I'm worried about the risk management too. I can see them putting up ropes and fences around all the cliffs, seeing as that hasn't happened. Also heard some patrol have left. And yes, that was me. Hi, I'm Mason

Hey Mason, it's Matt. Wish I'd realized who I was talking to today, I'd have done a lap with

you. Tomorrow if I see you I'll say hi and introduce myself properly.

That's shitty about Jordan, didn't realize he was leaving. He's one of the few upper level staff I know and he's a great guy. I've heard the same rumour about patrol, but all the patrollers I know say they plan to give RCR a chance before making a judgement call.

I guess we'll have to wait and see about risk management. All I can hope is that RCR hasn't got their heads so far up their asses that they can't see the appeal of the mountain is in its terrain.

Well good, nothing will change for you. Kicking Horse doesn't have or need a park. And hey Matt, I'll be up until Sunday.

It's safe to say that there will be no significant expansion of KH lift systems until they figure out their real estate mess. The market for what they (and Revy) have been trying to sell has dried up for various reasons, including the economy, poor returns for owners that rent, and HST in BC....which should be gone soon. Frankly, KH and Revy both have had problems selling 600 sqft condos at Whistler prices. Whistler has a town and a vibe. KH and Revy have NOTHING on hill. Try getting a burger there past 5pm. What a joke.

Though ski infrastructure will not improve, I fully expect RCR to systematically trash worker moral as they've done almost everywhere else. Also, I expect a lot more risk-related closures on terrain that many have us have safely enjoyed for over a decade.

Ive never skied at KH before but theres a good chance that im moving to Golden next year and this shit about RCR pisses me off.

I hate how companys with money can go around buying up mountains and changing what theyre all about. The fact that this sale has lead to people quitting just goes to show how stupid RCR is. Again, ive never been to KH but I know its known for its backcountry terrain and the pprospect of them closing off cliffs and stuff for saftey reasons is plain idiotic.
