Kicker L5 15 or Alpine type R 15

hey guys i just bought a hifonics 1200 watt rms amp

i have a not very good clarion right now

i want to purchase a new sub

now my choices so far are the kicker l5 15" because i hear they are the best for rap and thats all i listen to or the alpine type r 15

now they both cost realativly the same

they both are pretty sick but im just having a tough time

now im also wondering is it worth it to get the 15 over the 12 or what

15"s are overkill IMO, 12's give plenty of base. And Kickers are pretty banger. I haven't listened to any alpines before but they have a good reputaion
 
Type Rs no doubt. They are hands down the best subs i have ever had. I would go with type x 12's though if your planning on spending that much money.
 
Get a L7 L5's are just underpowered

Type Rs are just weak and aren't good.

In My opinion you should get a 15" L7 kicker or maybe 2 of em
 
yessir. i have a 10" type R and it DELIVERS. its got perfect bass for everything and its still crisp. i would go with a 12" type R and use the rest of your money to buy a nice set of polk components.

imo 15's are overkill and you will get annoyed after a few weeks. my first subs i had 2 13" JL W7's and it was fun for about 6 months. then i realized that they overpowered every song even if i turned the bass all the way down. my next set were 2 12" american bass.

plus a 15" sub takes up alot of air space so be prepared to have a huge ass box, and your gonna want to dynamat the shit out of your car unless you want to be rattling down the street.

so in conclusion, 12" type R will be the most versatile sub, great for every kind of music, and it wont overpower the lyrics too much. best of luck with your decision.
 
i have 3 friends with the 12" typeX, 10" typeX, and 10" typeR all bump but the x's put it out more. drop the size and go for the type x they are insane
 
I had an L7 15 when they first came out and I enjoyed it....a lot
Although it took up a lot of fucking room. I say go with whatever one is most space conscious. I mean when I say a lot of fucking room, I mean the whole damn trunk.
 
fuck both of them- nice subs dont get me wrong- what amp are you planning on buying - you can get a shitload better subs that are much cleaner and harder hitting for the same price

spend the extra 90 dollars- buy the proper amp and some good 1/0 gauge wire- and blow the fucking shit out of your car- also no one in your town will have it
I have been using Hifonics for a while now- they are amazingly clean- super low sine waves- can be wired down to .75 ohms- and they can take a beating and when they fucking hit you will definitely know it.

or these Orions- much cheaper and don't need as much power so you dont have to go out and buy a ridiculous amp and spend a shitload on caps and power wire. However they will hit cleaner and harder than both the Kicker and the Alpines hands down
If you could give some info as to what you are looking for I can help you out.

But if you are stuck between those two subs only- Alpine because if you going to be hitting them real hard they have a better cone and can deal with excursion.

 
This is truth right here. I can also attest to this. I have a 10" Type R that has 550 watts at 1 ohm pushing it and the 10 can make my car rattle. A 15 is serious overkill.

If you don't upgrade your components your sub will just sound like shit. You might like having a 15 with shit components for a few weeks, but as time goes on you will regret your purchase. You would be much better off going a 12 Type R and getting nice components.

Also, don't buy stereo stuff off of ebay. That is just a bad idea.
 
sorry for the double post- just actually read your thread haha- what model amp do you have and is that the rms or peak power handling- the only reason I ask is because you probably have a 600 watt rms amp
in that case the orions that I recommended are much better- also some of the hifonics brutus series subwoofer are going to be good.

Also to answer your other question- if you have room for 15 and are going to build a large enough enclosure- it is always going to be better- if you compare a 15 inch type r and a 12 there is a massive difference just because it has a larger speaker surface- which means it moves more air - which means its going to be hitting harder-

and my last bit of advice is build the right enclosure- - pre built are pieces of shit that blow up- you need something built to the specifications of your sub manufacturer for your music tastes- if its rap - its always gonna be ported- mine is tuned to 18hz but with that kind of power you willl never be able to get that low- if your not comfortable building go to Best BUy- they will hand make one for you for about 120 bucks-
 
just get a 12" type r, or 2 if you feel its nessecary. i have 2 12s in my jeep and their not even that great subs and they fuckin pound. 15"subs are too much if you ask me
 
now you have an interesting concept. sealed boxes and the L7 / L5 series last I knew...not the best design. They were designed for ported applications.

I am not saying they won't work, but I have had subs in sealed applications and then ported, and it is a world of a difference. Once your sub "drops" if you will....in a ported application. Man hold your bowels shut.

I had an L7 15, and yeah it ruled, and there wasn't really any notes in a song it wouldn't play but the ultra low sub 25-30hz area, but I switched to 12's over box size concerns.

And I to this day still run a single 12 in a ported box.

I knew a guy who ran the same subs I did in a sealed setup, and he blew them 2-3 times before he went ported. He kept trying to push them and he clipped them every time. Then he went ported and he doesn't even turn it up all the way cause it is too loud....
 
this- spend more money on a good 12 if you have space concerns- but what every one seems to forget is that he has wayy too much power for even 2 type rs if thats his rms rating- they are only 500 watts rms a peice- if thats the true power and not peak then you should definetly look into a type x if your lloking to stay with one- or you could buy what I just got rid of

I have the type r and it bumps like a motherfucker. dont get the 15 because they miss so many beats. a 12 is alll you need, it will still be loud as fuck and get all the high and low beats.
 
what are you talking about they miss soo many beats?
do you mean they dont have as good of a freq range- thats not the subs fault thats your head unit
 
We have no clue what ohm voice coils he is running, if they are dual voice coil, quad coil, etc. And I am not sure what the Hifonics amp is stable to.

Never the less too much is not a bad thing. Just turn the gain down. The less the gain is turned up, the less distortion, which when properly adjusted means the sub will last longer

Also there is a theory with "missing beats" per say. Your sub is a 15 inch, compare that to a 10 inch. Now just thinking here...what sub can move in and out faster? Well the 10 inch in theory should be able to move in-out faster.

Although this in reality isn't as true as it sounds. People may describe 10's as "sounding tight", and 15's as "sloppy". If you are this anal about your subwoofer setup you really need to consider a box properly tuned for your sub.

A proper box = the difference between a crappy experience vs. a good experience. Put the wrong box in and things can sound way fucked up, and in fact you can damage your sub in some cases.

And frequency range....heres what happens there

Your deck sends noises from whatever hz to whatever hz.

Your subs have a frequency response of say (just throwing a number out) 23-130hz. Although the sub will be louder in certain frequency ranges based on

1. your sub size

2. your box design (port specifications mainly)

Your head unit will not output a bad frequency. The design of your system will determine everything. In order to have a tight sounding ported subwoofer, don't get a huge box, tune it low to say 30 or 33hz. And things will be as tight as a high school virgin.
