Kentucky derby

the only female horse in the race broke both front ankles so they euthanized(sp) it on the spot. Thats too bad.

I was watching it with my dad who is horse vet... he is really emotional about his job, pretty depressing watching it with him when I could tell from his expression that he already knew the horse was dead~

Yea I don't really get why people are into horse racing. I really think rich people just go to impress people by saying that they were at the kentucky derby bidding on horses.

that sucks.

i wanna see the oners faces from finding out that they had 2ed, to the face when they saw the horse drop.

thats an expensive ass horse.

It was an excellent derby, but with a very sad ending. That filly was amazing, finishing second. Some people don't realize what the odds are against a filly making it to the Derby, let alone finishing second. She truly had an impressive showing. It is very sad that she was injured. For those of you doubting putting her down, the comment was made that she was in extreme pain. It is a sad aspect of the sport, but an aspect nonetheless. I'm definitely excited for the Preakness now!

its sad that they kill the horses, but most of the time when a horse gets injured that badly they will never fully recover ( my uncle is a vet).

that sucks.

yeah it sux they have to euthanize em, i mean i wish they could heal, but i geuss, they cant. Just to think that horse was alive only one hour ago.

o yeah fuck ESPN and their 6 hours of pre race coverage. let me set the stage. i was stuck working at a golf course and had to watch them fucking talk about the race from 11am until 5, i was ripshit. who cares about a hourse race enough to watch the life story on every single horse in the race. it was raining, cold and nobody was at the course i was working at so i couldnt occupy myself with anything else either. probably one of the most misserable things i have ever had to watch. and horse racing in general is wicked gay.

they have to kill the horses when they break legs or something, they're useless and just in pain if they don't shoot them in the face/lethally inject them

that sucks.

It's extremely hard to save a horse with a broken leg or ankle needless to say two. Look at Barbaro. He had an extremely hard time with his shattered leg and they had to put him down because the blood wouldn't circulate to his hoof so his hoof was deteriorating.

if they did that to humans, tanner hall would be dead.

but how did it break its ankles? did it just trip? i watched the video and i dont understand.

Basically.

I didn't see the footage, but what I'm guessing is is that the horse stepped on the lead hoof wrong and fractured it then stepped on the other hoof wrong to catch itself. Thoroughbred's bones in general are longer than they are wider and the horses are averaging out at 16+ hands (1 hand = 4 inches) at the withers, so it really doesn't take much since the horse is traveling at an average speed of 40 mph.

correct me if i am wrong, becase i dont know the first thing about horses..... i thought i remembered seeing a report, or something like that, where they said, because he was such a high performance race horse, that there would be no chance that he (barabo) would ever be able to move like he did, so euthanizing him was better(even though it is a terrible act), because he would just keep injuring himself. from trying to run like he was able to at one point.

again i dont know the first thing about horses, so i could be way way off.

Euthanizing him was not a terrible act on him at all. His hoof was deteriorating and it could not be reversed, so he really could never walk again really anyway. Horses can't survive on 3 legs...it's impossible. The life of a Thoroughbred should be never kept in a stall anyway. Even though his fractures were healed it's still weaker than the rest of his healthy legs, and a 1000+ pounds on the one leg could have broken it again.

MORE PROOF of media bias, i was misled by the media.

and yeah, the part about, keeping thoroughbreds in a stable, is what i was aiming for, but like i said, i dont know anything about horses..

I never read the report on Barbaro, but I just did. There really is NO WAY he could be a normal horse again, as Thoroughbreds are extremely high strung animals anyway.

After the surgery he developed an absess in his left hind hoof because he put too much weight on it from keeping of the right injured hoof for long periods of time.

He then had a severe case of laminitis in his left hind hoof because of the weight shift. They surgically removed 80% percent of the hoof wall. Now both his legs are in casts.

By January, the laminitic left hoof showed problems again so they removed another section of the hoof. Since they did surgery, they put another cast on his right leg for support.

He then had an absess in his right hoof, so they inserted two more pins for support.

A week after the last surgery he was lame in every leg, and could not bear any weight on any leg so they put him to sleep.

Barbaro was a business. Every race horse is a business. If the business is not running up to par then they are gotten rid of. Not necessarily euthanized, but pretty much given away. I've been in the horse (but not race) business for many many years so it really doesn't phase me. I am really surprised they didn't euthanize him on the track right then and there.

A lot people see my horses as "Fluffy the Horsey". I see my horse as "'VZ Rockin' Raul' the Show Horse". Breed the mare, drop the foal, feed them for 2 years, move them for training, promote them and then move them out.

wow, i really must meet you some day (haha. hope that didnt sound too creepy haha)

all the "horse people" i know, would have their horse live in their house with them if they could..... way way way to obsessed with them, and they would flip out if they read what you just wrote....

not saying it is bad to be obbsessed with your animal, but these people take it way to far...

(not saying all "horse" people are like this, just the ones i know)

HAHA! My family and I have to sound like this because this is our business. Our horses aren't a hobby. The IRS right now is trying to get us to say it is so we can't write them off. Wankers.

I don't have a problem with those people at all. They love their animals and as long as they treat them well I don't give a hoot.

I love my horses. My mare that I've had since I was five would probably come in the house if she damn well pleased, LOL. I could fall asleep in the middle of her stall and I would trust her that she would never step on me.

ok the house was a bad example, haha

but you seriously sound normal compared to some of the people i know.

i do agree that as long as the animal is well taken care off they can do what they want, but IMHO some people take it way to far, (not you, haha)

Yeah, it get's annoying sometimes, but I'm never around those people anyway. Those people can usually NEVER afford my horses or the business that I am in (Not to sound like a bitch, but it's true.). The Quarter Horse business is so huge. You would never know that the largest single breed horse show (Quarter Horses BTW) takes place in Columbus, OH every October.

PS I would bring my mare into the house. My mare might find it quite enjoyable actually. Especially the kitchen pantry, LOL.

haha if you had a mini horse like Rob and Big that could actually work...

i love the crazy antics that show dreams up

Nah. I'm not going to gloat, but my house isn't exactly small, LOL. She would fit in quite comfortably. She knows where she begins and ends.

Wow I am the opposite of you. My dad is a horse vet and my mom is a horse trainer, my childhood has was filled with way too many of those smelly dumb things. They are just as irrational as dogs except instead of being fun they just fucking bite you or kick the wall like a 2 year old that has had too much sugar, but then again im biased, I was traumatized as a child.

i know about the biting one of my donkeys bites alot, it is alot of fun to not tell people and let him bite them

here's the little bastard

You aren't really. Horses in your family are a business like mine. It's just my mare is spoiled and she gets what she wants - she's really bossy, but then again she is a kids horse.

There are stupid horses and then there are really smart horses.

I meant more on the result of the influence, but one bonus is a lot of young cuties that ride for my mom, but its kind of illegal for most now so yeah not touching that haha. Oh, and I think pretty much all horses are retarded, not just some of them.

sorry for the double post but that guy broke down in tears when they talked to him about it, he said that the horses weren't money they were like his family, way to be an ass hole though...

sorry if i sound dumb but i know pretty much nothing about horses but a quarter horse is a horse that races? which would make you a breeder? do your horses race? or are they equestrian type horses ?
