Yeah I guess I used the word in the wrong context. Kendrick is, however, a talented rapper and especially lyricist.

Hip Hop is a lifestyle representative of the struggle of African-Americans, and originated in an attempt to express the feelings and the issues of these people in NY at the time. MC'ing is only one aspect of a much larger culture that includes DJ'ing, Graffiti, and B-boying as well as a focus on uplifting and bonding within communities, and spreading acceptance and love. Kendrick is a talented lyricist who does rap about the struggles of life in the ghetto, but it takes a lot more than that to truly be a respected member of hip hop culture. Rap music lost this aspect over the last 20 or so years, and the rap game today is a shell of it's former self and I think a lot of the OG's like Shaka Zulu, Grandmaster Flash, etc.. would be disappointed with the way rap is viewed in society today, with Kendrick being a part of that.

This, and thizzle that was what I was trying to get at with my comment originally. Kendrick is a talented lyricist/rap artist (although I am not a fan) but not a hip hop artist.
 
i think that kendrick, schoolboy q and A$ap rocky are all similar in that they are so different from everyone else. they are all so innovative with their flow and they all have super unique lyrics, all while making it sound damn good. Id say due to this they are the 3 best out there right now.

Right, I understand what you are saying completely. There are very few rappers these days who truly represent the hip hop lifestyle.
 
Tbh they're both really talented rappers and I enjoy listening to them both very much. Good kid maad city is an awesome album and one of the few that I can listen all the way through and enjoy. But on the other hand, older macklemore like his The Language of my world is also incredible, that is another one of the albums like good kid maad city for me.

Wow that is a lot I was meant to infer!

I never tried to imply he was some kind of social warrior, more just trying to point out that I think he is written off to easily by so many people based off of the few songs by him which get radio time, when in reality there is so much more to him then those few songs show. I even remember watching an interview where macklemore admitted to getting depressed after thrift shop took off because he didn't want to be know as the thrift shop guy when there is so much more to his music than that.

If you do want to talk about being a social warrior you can't deny that same love did far more for human rights than other song relased In a long time. Personally I don't like that song very much and think it is stupid that people needed a song to convince them that gay marriage is right, but you can't deny it had a great social impact.
 
Kendrick blows. TDE blows. If you ain't Glo Gang or Kanye, you aren't moving in the right direction musically.

You're just wrong. Sure, hip hop went down the absolute shitter from 2005-2010. Not many people contest that. But with the rise of TDE Beast Coast A$AP and Bruiser real good hip hop has made a comeback. Even Madlib just dropped another bomb named Cocaine Pinata. It's great. You should give it a try. Take off your "yesterday's gone" glasses

Kendrick doesn't drink or smoke, is super active in his community, regularly advocates getting away from materialism in hip-hop, he's literally doing a world tour where he donates ALL of the profits to habitat for humanity, not making a penny from playing any of the dates. I get that you're trying to appreciate other aspects of hip-hop than just MC'ing, but to say that Kendrick isn't hip-hop is just silly.

This this this. what's up with all the people in this thread trying to prove they're hip-hop heads by out-bemoaning each other about how hip hop isn't "pure" or "real" anymore? yeah, there have been some times there for a minute where things weren't going great or going in the wrong direction musically, but this ain't one of them.

Ya there has been alot of hate on it but I love basically every song, soul killed it on this one. You have to decode the lyrics to appreciate the album
 
Some food for thought:

I was at Hudson Project this weekend and saw Kendrick, Flatbush Zombies, and Isaiah Rashad. While Kendrick was good, on most songs he rapped like every other line over a recording and I wasn't overly impressed. Was not nearly as good as he was on the GKMC tour (saw him there too).

Isaiah really impressed the shit out of me. His voice sounded really good live and he didn't miss a word. Really connected with the audience too.

Flatbush gave an absolutely crazy and awesome show as usual. Hit every line perfectly even with frequently stopped beats.

So Kennick was hype and shit but wasn't too impressive. Both Flatbush and Isaiah's sets made me think THIS IS HIP HOP.

Very hype, I'm jealous. I have heard from friends that Flatbush puts on a killer live show. I was too broke to be able to go when they toured in Seattle and was pissed.

Ive wanted to go see a flatbush concert for forever. I was so mad when I couldnt go to soundset because it was 45$ to go to one of the best festivals.

The set list awas absolutely nuts and it gets better every year.
 
whoever posted vipassana, yeah that songs good but it came out like 3+ years ago, his music has changed a lot since. it's not about the radio only playing thrift shop, that whole album was commercial garbage. kendrick keeps it real, you can't compare the two at all apart from putting them at opposite ends of a scale.

i agree with that entire post except for the whole album was commercial garbage part, was it as good as his earlier stuff personally i dont think so, but it was still a really good album. The only song i didnt like on it was same love

I'm so stoked for Jay Rock's album! There's nothing about it though, it's been really quiet. I'm expecting it to drop August before Kendrick in September. Neither have released any singles yet either. Wtf
