A ridiculous amount of money

NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrina's victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering — including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.

The total number — $3,014,170,389,176,410 — is the dollar figure so far sought from some 489,000 claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Of the total number of claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.

"That's the mother of all high numbers," said Loren Scott, a Baton Rouge-based economist.

For the sake of perspective: A mere $1 quadrillion would dwarf the U.S. gross domestic product, which Scott said was $13.2 trillion in 2007. A stack of one quadrillion pennies would reach Saturn.

Some residents may have grossly exaggerated their claims to send a message to the corps, which has accepted blame for poorly designing the failed levees.

"I understand the anger," Scott said. "I also understand it's a negotiating tactic: Aim high and negotiate down."

Daniel Becnel, Jr., a lawyer who said his clients have filed more than 60,000 claims, said measuring Katrina's devastation in dollars and cents is a nearly impossible task.

"There's no way on earth you can figure it out," he said. "The trauma these people have undergone is unlike anything that has occurred in the history of our country."

The corps released zip codes, but no names, for the 247 claims of at least $1 billion. The list includes a $77 billion claim by the city of New Orleans. Fourteen involve a wrongful death claim. Fifteen were filed by businesses, including several insurance companies.

Little is known about the person who claimed $3 quadrillion. It was filed in Baker, 93 miles northwest of New Orleans. Baker is far from the epicenter of Katrina's destruction, but the city has a trailer park where hundreds of evacuees have lived since the storm.

Katrina, which is blamed for more than 1,600 deaths in Louisiana and Mississippi, is considered the most destructive storm to ever hit the U.S. It caused at least $60 billion in insured losses and could cost Gulf Coast states up to $125 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Most of the claims were filed before a deadline that coincided with Katrina's second anniversary, but the Corps is still receiving them — about 100 claims have arrived over the past three weeks — and is feeding them into a computer database.

The Corps said it isn't passing judgment on the merits of each claim. Federal courts are in charge of deciding if a claim is valid and how much compensation is warranted.

"It's important to the person who filed it, so we're taking every single claim seriously," Corps spokeswoman Amanda Jones said.

hahahahhhahahahahahahahahaha....... well now the US is proving we can sue for any dollar amount now. we already proved we could sue for anything possible, why not take it one step further.

people knew the danger of living in an area so close to the ocean but below sea level. if they didn't they're idiots.

to place the blame for the damage on the government is insane. ok the levees weren't strong enough to handle the magnitude of the flood but when they were built, did people even think a storm that big was possible? i would hazard a guess as no. if the builders simply did a half assed job then ok yes they have grounds for a claim but if the builders/designers did everything they could to protect the people of new orleans from this type of event, then these people have no grounds.

what person in their right mind sues for a billion dollars? fuck that! i can see launching a lawsuit to recover any and all posessions in their houses that were lost as a result of the floods but please, $1,000,000,000? rediculous.

are they stupid? i understand the anger, but be even slightly reasonable. that's scores more than the national debt.

there was a storm back in the 1920s i believe and it was similar to katrina. the government did nothing, nothing at all to help. so these fucking _____ need to quit fucking complaining. i can understand like pipe munky said about filing for lost possessions, but there are hundreds of outrageous lawsuits coming in a week. they need to realize they took the risk by living there, so quit bitching.

thats really doing nothing but futher hurting the economy, if they win the suits thats all the less money the govt will be able to spend on the recovery of New Orleans and other disasters. It might even further deter them from wanting to help the remaining victims.

i dont think the government could have really done anything back in the 1920's, with the great depression and all. but i agree with you and pipemonkey. pip pip

no this was before the depression. the depression happened in like 1929 i believe. this was early 20s. but the early 20s were complete opposite from the depression because of the money in the system from the stockmarket.

even if they did know the danger i dont think many people on ns could understand how hard impossible it would be to move out that area when you lack the finances. many people grew up there and have been able to get a decent enough job to keep them alive their last concern, and rightfully so, is whether or not they are in a safe environment.

and i think the rediculous claim is more of an attempt at a message. and it wasnt only $1,000,000,000 it was 1000 times that amount haha. and the levees were underfunded by the government, there is no question that the US was at least a bit ignorant towards New Orleans' safety.

they told them for 12 days or more to get the fuck out of there. They stayed to loot and now they are sueing. Don't tell me that the person asking for 4 quadrillion dollars didn't loot and didn't have a chance to leave, they did.

Um there were warning signs !! hellooo!!! "The levee's gonna break" - the song, y'know... New orleans is sinking and I dont wanna swim - tragically hip ? anyone? no one saw the signs?fools!!

i hope they never get a single cent . they were idiots to live there in the first place and the govt cant control the weather!

that is so stupid. next time it rains i'll put something electronic outside and sue the government of an insane amount of money.

its still not the govts fault. a storm blows through and suddenly theyre all set for life many times over? makes no sense.

it isnt the government's fault and there is no way anybody can seriously claim anywhere near a billion for damages but I still think at some level there was a lack of funding in general towards new orleans safety before and after katrina. but there is also the argument that the more we mess with a river system the worse it will get.

hahahhaha all i could think of was a town meeting with all these people going we need some money, lets get a million dollars! healz no son we roll big here i dont get outta bed for at least a quadrillion dollars

exactly. people need to accept responsibility for their actions instead of blaming other people for them. I had a nice rant but i deleted it becasue there are probably people on this site who sympathize with the people who sue us for $1,000,000,000 with the average douche with a net worth of 50k suing us for 1000 times that. But i just decided to leave it with this...

quick pause for an SAT prep question

when a catogory five hurricane is coming for your undersea level home you should ________

a. eat fried chicken

b. get the fuck out.

C. start filing your claim so your's is done before so you can have your mil. before everyone else.

D. sue someone because there were obviously no precations that you could have taken to ensure your house got destroyed  (oh shit maybe this is why my insuriance company wanted so much money that i couldn't afford it so i don't have any insurance, oh well i can always sue my goverment)

E. ponder whether your 87 civic is worth $1,000,000,000

you sure its not 3 quadrillion pesos? i mean that might be a little more reasonable, haha.
dude, think of how much bank that lawyer will get if he claims a percentage.

i highly doubt that the person who filed the claim for 3,000,000,000 its actually serious.  its also funny that any lawyer is willing to take the case, because they will obviously not recieve the money.

i'm 99% sure that all the people who bitch when a levee or bridge breaks.......bitch just as hard when they're asked if we can raise their taxes to pay for fixing it BEFORE HAND

ahahah...has to be popeyes tho and a colt 45

but noo requesting 4 quadrillion dollars is bullshit considering most people were living off of welfare and their lives were not (financially) worth that much money....not saying one person is worth less than another...cuz u can't put a price on a human.....but financially speaking these people had "nomoney" so to request that much is bullshit....i could see more reasonable request like 50-200 thousand doallars but that's still pushing it
