Karma

Don't worry about it, but karma is explained extensively in many places on the site including the info screen when you sign up. If you searchbar it you can find some good threads on this.

And for the most part it does not work.

I mean look at me, I'm an asshole, and have over 2x the karma of silence, who is one of the most helpful members of the site.

Also you have stacks more pictures, videos, blogs, reviews etc - they definitely come into the formula for calculating karma

Australia sees very little snow, so there isn't any point me putting up pictures etc.

I really think the karma system should be abolished. I understand the idea behind it...to signify members whose contributions are worthwhile. Right. Unfortunately, that's not what it represents. Anyone that has even a modest degree of interest in contributing to this site quickly discerns the 15 year old trolls/post whores from the awesome members. Does NS really need an e-rep status symbol?
Just look at the forums....at any given time there are a dozen "+++K" threads. Mostly, they're spam related and utterly pointless. The children on this site who actually value karma, (and who haven't figured out that if you post 50 pics that you'll cuuuhrazyy mad karma) relentlessly respond, thus encouraging more and more worthless threads. It makes finding worthwhile posts and content really difficult. I think simply by doing away with karma, we'd see a big decrease in bullshit.
I also think post counts are a bad idea for similar reasons. I won't go there.
One other thought...how about limited thread creation powers? One per week in the general community threads? I'm tired of seeing the same jerk offs create obviously worthless/attention seeking threads.

i dont know i think this would backfire. i only really make threads when i need to, but i feel like alot of people would just make a random thread at the end of the week just so they wouldnt be wasting

Why do you think limiting thread creation would motivate people to create one any more than usual? I'm open to this, I'm just not quite wrapping my head around it. The vast majority of people on this site rarely create threads as it is, I'm trying to stop/slow the few who compulsively do so. Everlastingpenis, 8----p~~, .SteezusChrist. is a prime example.
I also thought about an instance where someone creates a thread, and then, has a legitimate need/want to create another in a couple of days. They could pm a mod, who could in turn allow them to do so. Or, just have a pal create the thread for them, or.....gulp....create an alias if completely necessary.

its very similiar to gamerscore. the more games you play, the more gscore u get. kind of like newschoolers. the more posts, threads, pic, etc... the more karma you receive. no matter how pointless they are

I understand that.
My point was that people create, and respond to, worthless, off-topic threads simply because the thread creator promises karma, thus clogging up the forums with bull shit.
My other comment about limiting thread creation was unrelated to karma and just a rant about my frustration of the same handful of people constantly creating and bumping their own threads.

I don't mind it, I try to make as helpful posts as i can, but I dont think about karma everytime i post.. I dont really see why it matters, I can understand why people wanna know about it to get informed or w/e but I think complaining about the system is a waste. Its not going away and a lot of people like seeing what other members think of them and I guess this is the way were going to see that.

That's what so many people don't understand. Karma doesn't reflect what other people think of you. If karma was solely based on people's appraisal, it would actually probably be a decent system.
"Complaining" is a waste? This site exists and changes namely because of user feedback.
I'm not going to reiterate what I've already said, but frankly, your post is irrelevant and belies the fact that you probably didn't read or understand what I said.

basically, when you help me or even just someone else out or just make a post that i thoroughly enjoyed reading, whether it was a good story, made me laugh, or maybe if i got into an interesting and informed debate with you that didn't just end with "well fuck you" or something, then i'll give you karma, because you are a worthwhile member who is in my opinion, contributing well to the site. If you aren't helpful at all, blame other people, or just do stupid shit in general, i'll give you no karma. And even though it's died down now, saying full tilts unless it was 100% the funniest situation ever got you bad karma.

unfortunately, the way it really works for most people here is more like "hey, this kid disagrees with me about the most meaningless trivial thing ever....MINUS KARMA!!!!"

I give a bunch and never get any although its probably because im a huge post whore and somewhat of an asshole
