Karma

I just ripped the explanation of karma in the www.overgrow.com forums, thier system seems to work well

1. What is Karma?

In ancient Buddhist terms, Karma is the Universal Power Source that governs your life, and that which binds us to worldly things. The objective of every person is to free oneself from ALL karma and thus obtain liberation. Freedom from both 'Good' and 'Bad'. In Buddhism & Hinduism, the sum of a person's actions, intentional actions, regarded as determining that person's future states of existence is that of karma.

# If you are good to others, you are given a good and prestigious life.

# If you are bad to others, you are given a bad and shameful life.

The Buddhists thought of karma as being stored in the soul. It is simpler here at Overgrow... we keep it in a database!

The karma system is a unique feature of Overgrow. It allows you to give other OG members points based on your approval/disapproval of them. Of course, the system works vice versa and other members can judge you as well! As your positive karma increases, you will display/give/take more karma. As a general rule, OG members with a high level of karma are generally viewed by others as having more integrity; their opinions are highly valued.

2. How do I use Karma?

How do I give someone karma?

At the bottom right of their post are the edit/delete, quote, and karma buttons, which look like a yin-yang symbol. If there is no karma button, then that member has chosen not to participate in karma. If you don't see any yin-yang buttons, then you are either not logged in, or your karma option is turned off.

Click on the karma button and a little window will pop-up. Within this window, you are given the option to approve or disapprove of their post. If you select “approve”, you will give that member positive karma, and vice versa.

If you click on the karma button on one of your own posts, it will indicate what sort of karma you've recieved on it overall, such as "quite positive" along with the comments and your total points-to-date.

When you read a post you like (the person was helpful, informative, friendly in your opinion), click the Karma icon on the lower right to give them some positive karma. Conversely, if someone reads one of your posts, and it contains good quality and thoughtful messages, your fellow members might reward you with positive karma. By their approval you gain Karma.

But if you see an offensive post, you can also click the karma icon to let that user know you disapproved of their post, and you have the option of adding a comment to explain why. If you post incorrect, misleading or offensive messages, members may punish you with negative karma points.

3. Karma system rules and features

System rules:

# Members can approve or disapprove of a post by clicking on the karma icon

# Your karmic rating will be displayed underneath your avatar for all to admire. Only you will know your exact number of karmic points however.

# For every 100 points positive or negative, you will gain another karmic rating (green dot) light, until you reach your 5th light, then you get another one every 200 points. After your 10th light, you get a bar which gets bigger after 500 more points and then even bigger every thousand points thereafter. See the chart in section 4 below.

# You can give 15 Karma awards every 24 hours. There is a light bar at the top of your karma pop-up window which gives you a visual indication of how many shots you have remaining to give at any given time. Also if you wave your mouse over the lights, you can see a timer on each darkened one telling you how many hours until it will be refreshed.

# You can only give one Karma award per post.

# You can view your last 50 karma comments by clicking the "Last 50 Karma Received" in your User Control Panel. If you click the thread link next to a karma comment there, you will be automatically redirected to the specific post you received the karma for.

Karma display colors

What do the green, red, grey and black lights under a member’s avatar mean?

Karma colors

# Green lights indicate the member has positive karma. They are able to give out positive or negative karma. The more points a members has, the more green lights (or bar) they display.

# A gray karmic rating indicator means that member is probation due to losing all of their points, and can only give out neutral karma (0 points) and add comments.

# One or more red lights represent significant amounts of negative karma and the user cannot give out any karma.

New user Karma

If you are a new user, you will start out with a green light under your name, but you can only give neutral (0 points) to others in the non-cultivation forums.

If you recieve neutral karma, you will see a gray light in the karma display of your control panel and the points won't change. Messages accompanying new user negative karma will be automatically deleted.

How many points do I need to begin giving actual green or red karma dots worth points instead of the gray blank ones?

If you have at least 65 posts and 25 K+ saved up, you will give 1 point +/-.

Why do I get so much gray karma?

Most new members don't realize it, but everyone starts out on “karma probation” until they complete their first 65 posts and have 25 K+ points saved up. Members on probation can only give neutral karma (0 points) with gray indicators in the non-cultivation forums, but they can give real karma in the cultivation forums.

Do neutral karma hits ever change to positive values later?

No, but it's the thought that counts!

Is it pointless to give out neutral karma?

Neutral karma is still a tool you can use to communicate little notes or compliments instead of pm's. Many times the message sent is worth more than the points. Members may be inclined to give back karma later.

Negative karma

Once a new green light is added to my karma display, will it always be there or can I lose it by getting some K- ?

Yes, if you receive negative karma, your karma points will be reduced and you might display fewer karma lights.

Karma comments

Once you have clicked the karma button and the window has opened, you have the option at this time to include a comment about that post. New user negative karma comments will be removed automatically enroute.

It's not necessary to sign your username, as it will be displayed to that member automatically regardless of whether you leave a message.

Many members will give you credit for a good post, but if you get negative karma, you might check your post to see why you may have offended someone, but there's always some people who insist on giving out negative karma and insulting others, just to be a troll and get attention, so try not to let it bother you too much... just laugh it off and go give out some positive karma.

Note: Anyone found abusing the karma system with obscenity and profanity will have their karma removed after one warning. In addition, their posts may be deleted and the user may even be banned from Overgrow.

4. Karma point levels and messages

Karma point ratings

Users with more karma and a longer time registered, will give more karma points in the cultivation forums than a new member with less karma. A senior member might give up to 10 points per “hit” while a new member will only give 1 point until they have a handful or more of green lights in their display and/or have been registered for more than a couple of years, or made thousands of posts.

Notice that when you hold your mouse over, or click on someone's karma light, you will see a cultivation % rating. This shows how much of that member's karma was recieved in the cultivation forums. Non-cultivation karma always counts for 1 point per shot, while karma given in the cultivation forums may count for more points per shot, depending on how much karma the giver has accumulated.

The non-cultivation forums include:

Smoker's Lounge

Photography areas (such as Plants & Budshots, Growroom Pictorials)

Outdoor & Greenhouses

Medical

Security / Legal

Activism

All karma in the photo forums is equal to 1 except for the thread starter's posts.... meaning only the thread starter gets full karma, responders only get 1 point.

Here's a link that you can use to check karma recieved, broken down by all the forums: click here

What determines how much Karma I can give?

There are three variables that determine how powerful your karma “hits” are (the actual formula is secret, and is adjusted periodically!):

1) Registration date

For every X number of years registered since Jan 2001, gain 1 point of karmic power. Long time members have been registered for a longer period and therefore have a higher karma hit.

2) Post count

For every X number of posts, gain 1 point of karmic power. Your power to give karma goes up very slightly for each set of 1000 posts you have. Turboposting is not rewarded.

3) Current karma points

For every X number of karma points, gain a point of karmic power.

Karma phrases

What are these funny descriptions that show up when you mouse-over or click on a member's karma lights?

The karmic descriptive blurbs change as you achieve certain karma point levels. Just hold your mouse over the lights to show the message. The longer phrases require you to click on their karma display to read it all. Here's a list of how they correspond to the total points each member has:

5. Karma Etiquette

*Don't be a karma whore... don't beg or make deals for karma.

*Don't post threads designed to trade or give-away karma, or to celebrate your new karma light, or to whine about receiving negative karma. Any such threads will be sent to the recycle bin!

*Don't make a habit of always announcing K+ on your posts, just do it... people often promise K+ first, and then find out they can't deliver afterwards... or they get distracted and forget.

*Don't give someone negative karma just because you disagree with their opinion - make sure they really deserve it. You should consider leaving them a karma message so they'll understand who did it and why, but that is your option.

*Don't complain about getting negative karma, it's only a virtual little point, and it only encourages them. You can check your post using the link next to the red dot to review your post, and see why it may have offended someone. You always have the option of using the Ignore feature to prevent them from bothering you any more.

*Don't complain about getting neutral gray karma - it was the thought that counted! That person took the time to let you know your post meant something to them, even though their points may not yet count.

*If you don't like the game, don't play. You can disable your option to participate in the karma system in your Options screen at any time. If you want to turn it back on later, you will need to send the site administrator a private message and your points will be restored to where they were before.

If you want to start over fresh, just delete your account and start a new one. You will start at neutral karma (0 points).

6. Common questions

How did the Karma system come about?

In January 2001 ~Shabang~ (OG site administrator) created the karma system. It's been through multiple revisions and tweaks since.

When I give karma to someone, does my Karma reduce?

No, your karma does not decrease by giving others karma.

What are some good ways to get karma?

Good posts naturally generate their own good karma. Be friendly, considerate, helpful, funny and/or show nice pictures of your grow, and don't discriminate or offend groups of people, and avoid discussing politics, religion or other highly controversial topics. Give out karma generously to others and some of it may come back to you later.

How can I check my karma level, see which posts received karma, and read the karma messages that were sent to me?

LoginGo to your Control Panel (or click MyOverGrow) on the top left of the page. From there you can click any karma awarded to you and be redirected to the post that the karma was given. The Control Panel link on the toolbar will light up yellow each time you recieve new karma, just as the one next to it does to signal the arrival of new private messages.

How did I go from having no points at all to something like 9 or 11 points on my first shot?

You start out with 10 free bonus points which are activated with the first actual shot you get +/- or neutral.

Why does it take so long for the karma window to pop up every time? Is there a way to make it go faster?

After giving out karma for the first time each session, don't close the window. If you leave it open, and click on a different member's karma button, the window will refresh to the next name more quickly than opening a whole new one.

7. Error messages

How come I "run out" of karma occasionally?

Everyone can give out exactly 15 shots per 24 hour period, not per day. Each individual karma "hit" is reset exactly 24 hours after it was given. You may “run out” of karma because your daily (24hr) allotment has been used up. Be sure to check your karma giving meter/timer mentioned above to see when the next "hits" will become available.

What does “you must spread karma around first” mean?

The karma system will not allow you to continually give positive or negative karma to the same person more than once every 3 days, and that's only if you've given out at least 51 other shots first.

Why does it say I have to be “a registered user” to give karma, yet I’m registered and already logged in?

Try going through your "My OverGrow" page at the beginning of each session, as this seems to add another cookie that solves the problem. Some proxies may also cause interference, if so you might try using a different one.

How did someone give me karma that was dated from 1969 or 1970?

That happens if the post, or the thread it was on, or the member who gave it to you has been deleted afterwards.

What if the karma window pops-up and just sits there with a blank white screen?

You can try minimizing that karma window and and then re-maximizing it or right-click on it & select the option to Refresh it, or hit Cntrl-N to open a New window for it. Try clearing your cookies and temporary internet files manually. Also check your java settings, or switch browsers. If the problem still persists, you may need to change browsers or proxies. For example, some people have problems with Internet Explorer and Mozilla solves it, while for others it's the opposite case. Uninstalling the Windows XP Service Pack 1 solves the incompatibility issue with certain proxys.
