type in your karma so you can track it. post as many times as you want (every few weeks or so), so if you want to know how much karma you had, when you had it, and whether you went up or down, now you can.

fuck that book. completely unrealistic they could genetically alter an entire race of people to be colorblind. what did you think of it, i'm reading 1984 and it feels like the same situation kind of.

COMPLETELY different situation...i havent read the giver since like 7th grade, but i agree it's bullshit. we looked it up on wikipedia the other day because we were having a big debate about the giver, 1984, and brave new world.
in the giver the societies are all these little utopian villages, and nobody is supposed to know that a world exists outside of the community. the fact that there is any history of the world at all is the big secret. i never really got the whole color-blindness thing either, obviously it's a metaphor for main kid's new higher state of enlightenment. you COULD engineer a whole race of people to be color blind because it's a well-known recessive trait, so if their scientists got good enough at it they could easily make it happen, but the fact that he can suddenly see color because of his heightened sense of awareness is stupid.
1984 is different because humanity has decided that the solution to the problems of the world isnt to break society down into tiny little cells. instead, they make government huge and all-encompassing. where in the giver they rely on brainwashing and the built-in constraints of societal conditioning, the government in 1984 sort've lets people continue to live the way they always did, except they have gradually eased them into the idea of having an omnipotent, omniscient leadership class. they control people through emotional and socioeconomic means by faking wars and virtually eliminating social mobility. the idea of freedom is actually an illusion. the whole thing is a really carefully constructed warning of what could happen if a powerful universal government managed to gain control of the whole planet and adopt the most heavy-handed tenets of socialism, whilst simultaneously employing the most extreme pitfalls of capitalism/consumerism to keep the masses pacified peacefully.
i love that book, and brave new world as well...if you enjoy it as much as i did, youll start to freak out sometimes when you see or hear something in your day-to-day that makes Orwell seem like Nostradamus.

what the fuck! i just got to part 2 of the 1984 so i'm not too deep yet, but how do you know they fake wars. it would make some things make more sense.

dude shit, sorry to blow the ending but that's one of the big things. there actually aren't 3 world governments, there's just one. they tell everybody that there are 3 and they constantly fake a war with one of them and spread propaganda about their anonymously evil enemies to the east in order to unify the population, but it's actually all a lie. there's a perpetual draft, but nobody ever really gets drafted, they just make up stories about fake people who die in fake battles in far away lands that nobody has ever been to. the world is run by one big government, and the assumption is that they fake the war all over the place in different regions to bring the people of each area together. nobody ever travels out of their own area, so they have no idea what's going on "abroad". they just exploit peoples' instinctive nationalistic tendencies to generate artificial solidarity, plus the "war" is one of the things that keeps everyone's mind off of how fucked up the system is, kinda like the lottery they're always talking about in the prole ghettos.

I've been making good positive posts lately and yet people keep on bringing my Karma down, whatever though. Do people on here like karma or dislike it?

dudeeee. shit, i'll finish reading the book, but god damn, it makes everything make more sense. i hope this connects something for me later in the book too.

and for the kid who asked about karma, heres how it works. karma was NS's way of trying to get their forums under control. they couldn't do properly because there were too many people in the forums and not enough mods, so they figured they'd make a tattle tale police squad, which effectively cleaned up a large amount of shit in the forums. you'll see striking differences between old ns shittalkers (legends like superskiingman, iceisscary, lateralis, e-heath) and the new ns which is everyone just being falsely extra nice to get a high karma number. it doesn't make any sense, but the people today are a lot smarter than they were before so the system works. you can't rile up a noob and get a mass hate fest (ala "how to get to chad's gap from the bottom of alta") because they will just ignore your posts if you have low karma. it worked well, but ns is at such a low level now it can't produce truly epic threads like it used to be able to. the last fully epic thread in my opinion was shawns. boners thread. look it up "i bet i could give my friend a boner".
