KARMA SYSTEM 101!

wow.... this seems unnecessarily elaborate. i think if you care about this its a good sign you spend way too much time on NS

but as some people have said i hope the fear of repurcussions doesnt make NS bland because that would be a tregedy. although everyone always claims to wish they could make NS more 'mature', be careful with actually doing it. i think beef and immaturity have a big hand in drawing people into this site and keeping it popular. expecting this generation to care about being seen as respectful by people theyve never made seems like a lot to ask

this sounds like a great solution to the ridiculous postwhoring problem.

wow I didn't know Skiierman was banned, I haven't been regular here lately...

Uh yeah.. at schools up here it's 50-60=C-, 60-65=C, 66-72=C+, 73-76=B-, 77-82=B, 82-85=B+, 86-90=A, 90+=A+. Class averages are all at 72.

Not that that matters at all to this thread.

Cool idea, but let skiierman comeback! Also this should just generally relate to forums only..not reviews and stuff. I dont wanna feel like I gotta work at getting a good karma rating...this isnt school. It should only be subjective to members more than mods, seeing as you are more like "teachers among students". I know thats a crude discription of the roles we play, but that how I feel about it. I love NS!

The point of the system changing is so you can't try to get a good rating, and that if you're a good member, you get a high rating.

It's not like it's gonna go down if you don't try to get a high rating.

Does anyone else think that it takes like a million years to hit the plus sign over and over. Why can't we just type it in.

Maybe I am missing something

On most computers you can click many many times before the page actually reloads. So it actually doesn't take long at all. I noticed on one computer that it had to reload after EVERY click though (geigh).

They update every day I'm pretty sure, but its on some sort of delay (intentional-so users have a harder time abusing). I think it updates everyday at the start of the day 12:01am but I'm just guessing.

On someone else's profile, the number on the left is what they're at, what's the number on the right? what you rated them or what they rate you?

It's what you rate them. Eventually when it gets working right, when you click on your profile, the number to the right will show the average of what other members rate you. I'm pretty sure.

this system is cool. i think post count should stay at least in your profile cuz i think its cool to see how much stuff ive posted in "x" amount of years ive been on the site. but replacing post count in threads with karma is a wicked good idea.

Awful! He is pointing out areas where it could be better and how it might help to not judge people based on one statement. People for him even questioning the system are implying people should rate him low!? Nomensteven is the only person in here actaully suggesting how to maybe make it better and offering constructive critism. He obviously has an opinion, a valid one from what I have read (and I did actually read his posts, maybe if you did bother reading them that would help). He took no offense to people calling out his opinion either, he saw where they were coming from and intelegently had a rebutal! How is he getting called out!? He contributed more than anyone (besides J.D) to this post. He merely is fighting for the most fair way and questioning the system, that is a good member to me...not someone who reacts to critism by bashing them and promoting Nomen as a bad member just because you may have vested interest and are being defensive. The system is new, change is good, but don't assume because a lot of work was put in that is is perfect or a good idea. It has good and bad aspects, maybe you should read the entire post from Nomensteven and understand his points as I feel they are very valid. SOrry for the rant, feel free to lower my karma for going against "the system", having a voice and supporting a member the Mods obviously seem to be promoting you to lower his karma for not conforming.

you are correct if you are reading this thread by itself. What you don't realize is that several weeks ago, there were 10 threads all going with his same amount of questioning scrutiny. He was told a zillion times to give it a chance, but just kept... I'll call it badgering. That post that you quoted was way out of context in the grand scheme of things from several weeks ago.

I'm still a bit bummed that my rating is only 57, but I'll continue giving it time to level out. I feel I deserve more than average, but it's alright.

Yea agreed. I've definitely noticed some people that should be way higher, and others that should be way lower.

There's a few legit NSers with really strangely low Karma. I also think the admins might be making some changes to the karma algorithms right now, so that could have something to do with it. Last week I went up 14 points one morning and then dropped 12 that afternoon. The system is just probably still in flux.

rate them up when you think they should be higher and rate them dwon if you think they should be lower. This system needs input to work. skierX for example is like 90+

too bad people are more likely to lower ur karma for something negative than they are to boost it for something positive

I can see how this might happen but who knows. I try and give positive karma for great posts, videos, blog updates or pics. Bad Karma to people who spam, make a general mess of newschoolers.com or hate on others excessively. Although my karma has only gone down and I haven't exactly been a hater so who knows.

I must say that this is one of the best idea's i have ever come across, seriously, it gives everyone a say about everyone and all this lame hating bullshit will finally end, it's about time skiing because a unitied supportive community and not a seperated, "you suck b*lls because you can't slide a rail" and i hate on everyone community. THANK YOU NS!!

Two of the most notorious of bad sellers ever on NS:

Yeti - 53

anon.ymous - 51

I think we need to maybe implement a large penalty for a confirmed bad sell, just one or two members rating these guys at zero wont drag their rating to where it truly needs to be.

For karma rating for users suggestion: how about imputing a function under the user asking the question: did this post help you? with a yes or no box. If the person wrote something really dumb or destructive, a user can only press on that box to higher or lower karma. I could only be done once per post or thread.

Is the whole "people rate me__" thing working for anyone yet? It isn't for me, but that's probably just because nobody's rated me.

ahh this is a good system. I like the idea, but at the same time, who is the jusge of it. What if you're defending someone who is getting flamed by 20 little kids? Do you get the shaft or do you get uber points for defending the poor man?

It seems like it's not working too well. Nobody's rating is changing. If the system is as complex as you say, then many people should be rated a lot higher. I suppose we should just give it time, but it seems like a bother to rate someone higher, and many members are quite lazy. It's not very exploited though. I doubt that even 10% of NS uses it.
