Karma spike?

While I'm with Mousseau on a lot of these points, this is one where he in a way contradicted himself... Not exactly "touché".

I don't think it's really that big a deal, If you want more karma I don't believe it's not that hard to get, I know you might be annoyed you lost some, but so did lots of others.
 
I would say don't bother rating anything. I'm pretty sure that's where most of my karma came from and disappeared overnight.
 
Anyways, I'm going to jump out of this thread until the first of next month when our system spits out the top 20 MOTM's.

(I'll probably just end up posting agian, because I love you guys haha)
 
Definitely thought my karma spike was a glitch.........whatever, I'll still be the same ol' hellion, no matter what that little number says.
 
Yeah I mean the system will sit where it is and well have to see how it works out. People raged about forum upvotes but they're here to stay and I like em. Changes often happen for the better and if not it will likely be reverted.

No way will we ever find out how the karma system works either. People would go to the max to cheat it because why not. It's like cookie clicker to some people (I think, haven't actually played that game). On the same token speculation should still be open so that we have a system that most feel is fair.
 
I've forgotten haha, looking back I can't see it(also forgotten what the deleted message said), perhaps I was just misreading.

I think you guys need to incorporate the upvotes and downvotes into karma (if thats not what you just did) because I find myself not using karma as much anymore. Before if I laughed at something or thought it was a good post I would give the person karma, now I just hit them with an upvote and call it good
 
Minor tweaks are now loosing more than half of your karma, (more than 10,000 for me and even over 100,000 for others) .

I'm all good with the rednames experiencing with the fact that karma should be rewarded more for vids/pics/articles and what not, which i do none of. It's great that the people who do will get more, but why the hell should people who got karma from posting, making good threads and getting love from other members suddenly loose more than half of it?

Are we being punished for not being active in the media section? For being newer than other members?

Between Drama Llama, Theintern, free trips to Africa and this I sense conspiracy....

But seriously, Mousseau, don't take it badly that most people who lost half their k accumulated over years (only 1 for me, not that bad) wanna know what on earth they did to deserve this...Couldn't you just put the new system in place without adding or taking away huge amounts of k to everyone? And nobody would of noticed, so nobody would of asked and nobody would of ever found out a way to "hack" themselves karma.
 
Since you're a newer member you probably dont understand that the karma system changes every few years. you need to learn to accept it and expect it

i really dont understand why so many of you care. it literally means nothing unless you are an amazing member (like me)

this shit happens relatively often, and while it pisses people off that lose karma, it makes the system better for the future
 
Mousseau isn't trying to be a dick about it, there's a level of secrecy that goes into the karma calculation (that us mods don't even know about). Part of that secrecy is what makes it successful. If people knew every detail of how karma is calculated it would be easier to beat the system.

Want better karma? Contribute in a positive manner in all regards, contribute photos, videos, articles and reviews. Make good posts and thoughtful threads, I have no idea how these are weighted but they all are an element. I'm guessing that creating well developed threads helps a lot more than "vote for me +karma" threads and leads to a better community overall.

The system isn't perfect but the NS staff is trying damn hard to make it that way, so please be patient as the ebb-and-flow progresses. Thanks dudes! Most importantly, its finally about to snow on the east coast!!!
 
I said I wouldn't post in here, and still unsure as to whether or not I should actually share this info, but I'm really hoping it'll instil a bit of trust in me and stop the speculations (because honestly, there's about a .00000001% chance that you'd actually be able to deduce the entire system)

You actually get more karma for creating a thread or posting a reply than before. So please stop making assumptions and going on the attack. I know what I'm doing, whether you believe it or not.

And PS -- there's only three people (Doug, Paul and I) who have access to how the karma system works... so stop asking haha

I dont really care how much karma i have but losing half is pretty discouraging.. like i go out and post mostly positive stuff with the best quality im capable of and then i lose half? Definitely not too hyped about everything on here right now. But I'll get over it because who cares haha
 
I hate to be another butthurt member... but since a decent amount of what i do on newschoolers is exactly creating and posting in threads (since that's what I do in school freetime). Why on earth did I drop 30%?

So....you post positively and with quality to stack karma? Think about that. You're letting an imaginary number, that you can't trade in for any value and that doesn't grant you special privileges or access, determine whether you're hyped on NS or not. Do you yourself scan everyone' karma and think to yourself, "Man...he/she is really awesome, they're karma is 500,000!"?

It's comments like this that make me truly believe that karma has no use or value here. What's the point? Blow up the whole system. I've never, not once, altered my interaction or changed my idea about someone because of their karma. Does anyone? I know dozens of kids here who are insufferable and make constant inane posts that have high karma. There are people who've been here for a decade who post once a month, and it'll be incredible, that have no karma.

that has always happened, and its common knowleddge that making threads/posting reults in more k. just look at skiierman. his rating is something like 1.5 (too lazy to really check) =, but he has a ton of posts and therefore a ton of precious k.

which brings up my next point. If Karma had any real world function, eg could be traded in for cash, prizes, discounts, etc, or even if it had a real function on the site, i would be pretty upset at losing it. But it doesn't. It literally doesn't mean shit, outside of MOTM, which seems to be going better so im not complaining. Would it be nice to know why we gained or lost what we did? yes. Do i really care, and is it going to ruin my day? fuck no. If you worked hard at being a member purely to karma, you should reassess your life and maybe go for a bike ride.
 
No I never said that. Watching my karma grow isn't some obsession but when I see it get cut in half after not being on a couple days bummed me out. I did nothing stupid to go from 9,000 to 4,500. Not sure where you got that idea that I think lots of karma means cool people, I never said that. But generally when someone has a good rep they have lots of k. Or if they've been on here for many years

This makes sense:

"What the fuck?! I've been working this job for a year and my most recent paycheck was half of what I've been getting paid, I won't be able to make rent!! I can't believe they gave me a pay cut without telling me and for no reason at all....I'm over this job, and I'm definitely not hyped on it!"

This doesn't:

"What the fuck?! My internet cool points that I've been working so hard to get by watching ski edits and clicking the up button and arguing about baggy or skinny pants in between masturbating and doing homework dropped by half overnight!! I won't be able to.....or wait....people won't think I'm....wait......Well, I have no fucking clue how this negatively affects me, but I'm not happy about it and frankly I'm just not that hyped on NS right now."

But please, double post away, and throw in a few memes and tell me how much my opinion is irrelevant by replying to it twice in succession. Someone will probably +k you for it.
 
It was a long fight, but after 25 or so days I have restored my karma. Sweet jeezus that took a lot of post whoring.
