Seeing how everyone on this website has an opinion on this site, I thought I'd post my portfolio to get critiqued.

I'd like to get some honest (informed) opinions. What do you guys think?

I've posted it at http://www.kapitolphotography.com

I like how it seems that he is looking at the skier.

I love the clouds on both of these pictures.

Keep up the good work!

i didnt look at it all. but the one with the person wearing teh spyder jacket is real sick. it reminds me of somethign id see in a catalogue for spyder.

the skiing one is dope too/

wow those pictures were really nice. the only ones that i didn't really like were the two black and white road/town shots. also this is a small critique but maybe move one of the skier pow shots around. just because when presenting a portfolio its good to have variation so when you see two shots that look similar in a row it takes away from the portfolio a little bit.

dannnnnn! it's so cool to see the FT and Line stuff full-sized and everything. looks real legit. as you know, i love the pics.. hope everythings well with you.

"the only difference between a bad photographer and a good photographer is that a good photographer doesn't show his bad pictures"

I have no clue where I heard that

Hey man,

Thanks for the review. I'd love to know which image you think is weak (with specifics). Tear 'em apart; what don't you like? What doesn't work in the photo? I'm looking for an honest review.

Thanks,

Dan

two fav's

black and white of street: first off i'm a sucker for black and white. also, this picture has so much depth. I love how far off in the distance the street goes. It has a real pleasant old-town feel to it. Good contrast.

two guys, guy in foreground blurred: i really like how only the guy in the background is in focus, and yet you can still make out the indifferent expression on the guy in the foreground's face. the stone wall in the background really gives the picture some complexity.

two least fav's

runners crossing finish line: I think this picture had a lot of potential which wasn't taken advantage of. one of my teachers once told me (not in these exact words) that a good photographer isn't afraid of getting down and dirty. It seems that you just stood there like uncle sammy to take the picture. I think if you would've gotten down at a more extreme angle and captured more of the finish it would have been better. I also think you could have incorporated the time on the clock in a more interesting way.

color photo of clouds and small building on left: i don't know if i described this one well enough...it has a ski pic above it and a black and white of a street below it. anyways this one was a little over-produced. I feel like it should have come as a preset background on my computer. keep it simple. these pictures are both about simplicity: a barnhouse in a field and an old country road.

btw...what camera are you using...real good quality photos

Most of the images you've got are pretty good, but I honestly don't think the blog is a very good medium to be your primary showcase of your work. IMO you really should have a webSITE and/or a BLOG. If you think about it, anybody who's going to be looking at your images (with the interest of hiring you) is more than likely going to be short on time; blogs are a bit of a pain in the ass to navigate if you've not been following them for some time. A clean, simple site is much more beneficial in this case......

There are some pretty clean and super simple methods of setting up sites with out too much effort,

http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/

being one of my personal favorites. Lightroom will even spit out a simpleviewer gallery ready to upload, or even better it will FTP it right into your site. All you have to do is have a frontend to link to the separate simpleviewer galleries.

Yeah, I've got things in the works. I had a site but it went down when my buddy, who's server I was sharing, switched plans.

I'll check those albums out. Photoshop has a couple of good gallery templates as well.

Thanks for the heads up.

yea lightrooms gallery is pretty tight, I had one for a while as part of my site, but after the last redesign i scrapped it, there are loads of good integratable galleries for blogs, thats what I use now, it gives your business a more personal feel, clients get to know you a bit better hence are more willing to employ you...
