Kanye West

I'm writing a research paper on Kanye West for a history class on pop culture in the US. Some things I was thinking about mentioning are his rise to stardom (how he came into the industry as a producer, came into the industry because of his skill, which is ironic because now he relies a lot on his personality to sell records), also mention some of his albums, College Dropout is worth a mention, maybe Late Registration, 808s cause it shows a different side of him, and obviously MBDTF cause its kind of like his hallmark achievement. Also obviously going to mention is celebrity status and his public moments. I think the moment when he said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" is definitely something worth mentioning cause it shows a lot about his character (he's trying to help out getting people to donate, he says something controversial, people criticize him for his comment but don't bother praising him for helping out a good cause, also Bush said is was "an all time low of his presidency" which is pretty funny. Also this clearly shows the stereotypes/racial aspect of Kanye's career and people's attitude towards him.

So I just wanted to get a feel for what America (NS) thinks about Kanye West. The thing I'm working on now is figuring out what Kanye's popularity reveals about America and just like the signficance of Kanye West in relation to American pop culture aside from his sheer popularity and record sales.

Thanks for the input!

College Dropout won a lot of awards and won best album of the decade, i think a lot of people would say its better than MBDTF. MBDTF was more his comeback after he disappointed a lot of people with Graduation and 808's.

worth mentioning that RZA gave Kanye his "blessing" to become the next huge producer in hip-hop, that South Park made an episode about his douchebaggery, that Kanye recognizes his own ego problems but doesn't seem to care much. don't forget how much the death of his grandmother and mother brought him down to the point that he actually broke down crying during a concert.

he's an interesting character and i don't think people learn enough about him before assuming the worst.

having followed his career since the college dropout days...i used to be a really big fan. i've been to a concert of his before, really really was a big fan.
sometime around when 808s came out his arrogance reached critical mass and he started on what i would call a downward spiral. Whether it was the stardom and fame or losing his mother, i have no idea...surely a combination of both. Anyway, he's just so far from what you could call a normal human being or someone who has their feet on the ground at this point...I just can't support somebody who is such a blatant narcissistic asshole.

agreed. and "family business" also. like what happened to those types of songs where it actually felt personal and heartfelt
