Kandide Thovex

If you don't know who Candide is, then don't bother to call yourself a newschool skier. Why even participate in this sport if you don't care enough to figure out what it means and where it came from?

I'm glad I have you're here to give me a lesson about history how I don't know shit about this sport... I grew up away from a mountain. I skied for fun and did it mostly by myself or with one other friend. I never got to see competitions, read magazines, see movies, or get any news on the sport... I grew up at crystal mt and only heard of Ingrid Backstrom few times while skiing there. I just love the sport, do it all the time, and am trying to learn more and more about it. So yes sorry for fucking the name up... kill my karma but I'm just trying to share some sick footage that I stumbled acrosss

This winter marks 10 years since Candide did that d-spin 7 over Chad's.. That guy was so far ahead of his time, it's crazy.

his segments in War, Rastafaride6 and Mind the gap are epic!

he has done soooo much for the sport we all love. if it was not for dudes like Candide, the level og skiing would not have been so high as it is today.

the old movies reminds me how fast the sport has grown in popularity and level.

so thank u sir for inform the young NSers aboute our pioneer.

and let us not forget Michael Dreshnaux (dont remember how to spell it. sorry),

mike wilson and of course mr Olsson.

i will also give creds to you lolo for inspire me to do new and different stuff on my skis. you will one day be a legend, if not already! THANK YOU!

Thank you! there is no required learning for this sport... required learning to post in newschoolers?.. everyone seems to think so.

Passion for skiing and passion for freeski history are separate things. People saw this thread as a chance to unload some rant about kids these days. I could talk freeski history, and i love it, but let people discover and relate on their own.

you think glen plake would lecture kids about it? Hes too busy showing them how to have fun skiing.

btw, just saw this at candidekamera.com
http://thebookofcandide.com/ put that on your x-mas list tripplesixty!

passion and fun are obviously part of freeskiing but i think it's important that people have a general knowledge of the history of the sport. Freeskiing was not just dropped on the planet. It has evolved from a foundation of having fun into the constantly progressing entity that it is today. I give credit to a lot of people, filmmakers, athletes, ski companies, resorts, and so many others for accommodating the needs of skiers looking for the next line, ruckus jump, or gnarly rail.

just like it is important to know your respective country's history, i think it's just as important to know the history of something that we are all so immersed in so we can contribute positively and with insight so the sport can remain what it is and not turn into some mainstream thing that kids turn to as a fad and take all the soul out of it.

All joking aside, I would GLADLY father his children...
That is to say, i would let him impregnate my wife and I would raise his offspring as my own...her and I have already had this convo

seriously though...like a month into dating we were watching one of his many mind-blowing segments, and I flat out told her, "you're gonna have to take it if we're ever given the opportunity"
problem is he'll be so much better than me I might end up a single parent..

Who cares if you end up with a son with genuine skiing talent;) id choose that over my misses haha.
you could be the sleezy dad that trys to still all the girls whilst he stomps tricks.

since candide goes underground all the time I think we get about one of these threads a year. here's probably one of his best segments:

I bet a sizeable chunk of this site doesn't remember who Evan Raps is.

Actually fuck that noise I bet a sizeable chunk doesn't know who Trevor Petersen is.

Lot of new people have found freeskiing in ~10 years now, who just don't have that background.

im pleased to see someone i consider a legend of skiing (laurent farve) coming on newschoolers and telling people that they need learn more and not get so obsessed with wallsich etc.... but then again if he was just some random saying what hes saying no one would really listen i guess...

Its cool that some of you are pretty passionate about preaching the history of freeskiing. But this kid (thread creator) was pretty stoked (super damn stoked) about Candide before he made that post! Its totally a testament to how strong Candides career has been! Stoked your stoked on Candide BRO!

Ha. sarcasm meter.

I met Candide back in Jan 2000 interviewing him after his first X gold performance, two years before I ever joined this site.

hahaha oh.my.god.- this is just bad- its not like hes even retired or anything and people still don't know about him-

^^^Yeah, love it....Essentially has a terrain park built just for him every year because he goes 3 time bigger than ANYone....and holds his own, seemingly popular, invitational jam dealy.....
But how would you have heard of him, it's not lke he's been at the front of a sport for almost 15 years...but it's funny to talk about him as a founder or a legend, because I grew up with him just being the best of the best(IMO)....
I see the legends as Plake, and Kreitler, and McConkey, Brad Holmes even....
Changing Sport I guess, I better keep up or we'll have the opposite of this discussion... I'll be the dick asking something similar to "Who the fuck is Tom Walsh?"

thats what im sayin.
candide is still so RELEVANT. nobody can do his tricks STILL. this dumb fuck of an OP had no idea what was going on in the first place, but still realized that this 'kandide' character is the boss. now that's real.
and somebody made the candide - larry bird analogy. i agree with the sentiment but candide is fuckin jordan.

Its easy for you to be condescending because you were around for skiing's infancy. I agree that it's a shame the new wave in skiing has little regard for the roots of the sport (and the creator of the thread needs to get learned). However it's pretty fucking counterproductive when you snap the heads off these kids who want to learn but don't know where to start. Instead of flaming them, help them out, show them the same patience that undoubtedly helped you fall in love with skiing 10,000 years ago. Maybe the RZA can explain it better than I...

If you approached by a brother in need

give him shine

Show him light, don't get emotional, son

don't fight

still would love to see candide slay at JOSS this year even though it wont happen. he needs to drop more edits i love his shitt

i'm glad you posted this. i never realized how good this guy is. i'm in awe of some of those videos

wow, that video really made me realize how much skiing has progressed. i counted zero pretzels and swith 1080 was a pretty big trick.

it sucks that people dont know about him, but why hate on them. Educate them! We who were fortunate enough to see candide push the sport, and continue to take notice should let the new guys comin up know about it. Candide has and i guarentee still will be pushing sport years ahead of where its at. He is always doing something that will never be done by others until years after. Look at him way back in 2000 in pipe. Pushing the backcountry scene, even before pollard and pep. Candide is honestly the most naturally talented athlete i have seen in any sport. Not to mention determined, as he came back from a very serious injury (broken back) to make one of the most epic edits ever (candide kamera)
sorry about the rant i just think candide is amazing and we need to let the new guys know, as they may be the next big thing in 5-10 years...

I'm glad that people posted SkiMovie III segments. Seeing Candide hit that massive table in the 2002 was sooo unbelievable. I looked it so many times that my SM3 VHS casette is all worn out :(

I really hope that the youngest generation of skiers is willing to learn something about the sports history. I guarantee that it'll be an eyeopening experience.. I think that the Steep -movie honoured the pioneers of extreme skiing wery well.

Exactly, thank you, although I do agree with JD that some people my age don't care, but some of us do so don't assume that we don't .

he made one spelling mistake and every single post is just killing him for it. you dont need a degree for skiing to ski. yeah it would be cool if more of the newer kids to the sport new a bit about the past of the sport but theyll come on newschoolers and the majority of the stuff on here is latest news

He also won the X-Games Big Air, back in... 2000 I believe? D-spin 720 and Flairs were his tricks of choice.

And was it JF that won the year before (and if my memory is correct - the first skier big air in X-Games - with a switch 720. JP did a styled out 720, Vincent did a 9? I'll go watch Degenerates this afternoon and check - I DO know it was held at Crested Butte.

this is so true. like who the fuck doesnt know about candide. he was always everyones favorite skier as a kid. i remember his blunt 9 in one of tgr's movies and it was sicker than seeing a kang for the first time.

Someone found and posted the vid of JF;s switch unnatty 720 awhile back. I was so stoked to see that again.

Repost not Alzheimers but I wish someone could find and post vid of Candide's gap jump that he won an award for. I can't remember ESPY maybe. It was huge and he rodeo'd it or something. Wasn't Chad's or Pyramid. He had to land like feet away from a tree if I remember right. Hope someone knows what I'm talking about and can post that clip.

Yeah so maybe it is alzheimers cause I wrote almost the same thing on page 1. Oh well, I make new friends everyday and I get to hide my own Easter Eggs. But I couldn't find that footage on Freeskier podcast. + K for anyone who can dig up that clip and post it or link.
