It sounds like they sold him a pair at wholesale cost. Basically if you beat the piss out of your skis, manufacturers will often offer you a good discount on another pair as a goodwill gesture. Basically it's a crash replacement. It's better for them to give you a discount on a new pair of skis than to have you buy from another brand.
