I am so stoked to read about this- its gonna be the event of the year for sure. bc freestyle is where its at for spectators, the invited athletes are the sickest in the world, no question. I'm not sure who will win, it depends how knarly the lines are. if they are, sage will win. if they are just bc kickers it'll be tanner. i hope candide takes it tho...

does anyone agree that tanner is a fish out of water if they are big mountains- i don't think he's on the same level as anyone else there?

Well apperantly its all about BC kickers and cliffs, I think candide could actually pull it off. He has sick style and throws down lemme google it Ill have more input.

i hope he can- he has so much style and is prob the only competing freestyler there (poss jon) that can throw down on big mtns too

could be pollard, but i don't tink he has the diversity- he's all slow, gorilla steez spins, i think on 9 separate lines, someone with bigger bag of tricks will take it.

Does anyone know why Eric Hjorleifson isn't listed as an invited athlete on the K2 back 9 web site? does he just not have a profile up there yet? he is listed on all the posters

Im actually saying pep will probably win now, him or candide. It seems like they are a little full of shit though. I mean they are only allowing one hit on each feature for each rider, what if yuo cant stick a cab nine first try eh?? oh well siick Idea but there are a couple things in there I dont agree with. Im also stoked they picked Mark Andre` Beleveu (or what ever) hes underated and killls it!

whats the deal with cr? will he ski again?

i dont get the idea of each hole- are there a line of hits that make a hole or is it 1 hit per hole?

K2 Back 9 Mini Golf Invitational

Whistler Backcountry Club

March 1 – April 15th, 2006

The K2 Back 9 Mini Golf Invitational introduces the skiing community to a new event/photo/film shoot that showcases the progression of backcountry skiing in an exclusive rider focused format. The term “Mini Golf” has come to define short, technical lines usually consisting of natural and/or constructed features. The K2 Back 9 Mini Golf Invitational is an event designed to document the evolution of trick focused backcountry and mini golf skiing from the athlete’s perspective.

The visionaries of the sport, our athletes, have been combining two totally distinct approaches to the sport over the past decade. The idea of merging technical park tricks with traditional big mountain skiing has given form to an entirely new breed of skiers. Each year these athletes test the notion of what can be accomplished on a pair of skis and ultimately redefine the limitations of the sport.

Many of these athletes have moved away from competition focused environments in favor of traveling and searching for natural terrain features and documenting this experience on film. The photographic and film documentation of backcountry skiing has been crucial to the advancement of the sport and any backcountry event would not be complete without its inclusion.

The K2 Back 9 Mini Golf Invitational is not designed to be a competition but rather a relaxed opportunity for riders to converge at one location documenting the sport and their passion for backcountry skiing and this lifestyle on film. This athlete focused event provides each participant rider the opportunity to watch the video footage of all attendees and award fellow riders based on the documented film footage. Multiple winners will be awarded during this event, but the overall winner will leave with a pocket full of cash.

are you crazy? Have been watching ski videos? I don't see anyone else landing huge 9s in sketchy places. you cannot count him out at all. As for the guy who said Tanner doesn't have the skills to hang in this group, you are ridiculous. Just because he made his name in the park doesn't mean he can't rip outside of it. And he does. I think the invite list is just off the cob. Well done, K2.

don't get me wrong, tanner can rip on bc booters. just not sure he has the big mountain experience to compete if the lines are gnarly or big cliff

wow this events going to be sooo sick its nasty that k2 really is thinking out the whole golf theme, gold jacket for the winner, mulligans, shanks, foursome groups if you read everything on the site its a REALLY sick comp

Tanner definitely has some skills in the BC, but it depends on what the contest focuses on. If big lines, even mini golf ones, are highly important, I don't think he can hang with Pep, Abma CR(pre-injury) or Sage. I remember talking to Dean Conway, in the spring of 02, after he came back from Alaska. Conway is a squaw legend who was guiding for points north at the time. He had guided Raps, Tanner, CR in april 02 in AK. He gave all three props for their skills, but said CR was on a different level from the other two. Too their credit, those guys were complimentary of Conway too.
