Just starting out

I'm just starting out on learning freestyle skiing. I've been skiing for about 8 years now (East Coast and West Coast) but it's been the boring air-less kind.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to learn first? Do I start with a 180, then progress to a 360 then onto rails and stuff? Learning is going to hurt bad isn't it?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

the best tip i could give to anybody starting is something i learned the hard way

since youve been skiing long enough, u prolly know to keep your weight mostly down hill

DO NOT CHANGE THAT IN THE PARK

i fucked up on rails so bad cuz i was leaning up hill a lil

also id say they r 3 basic tips that ive learned

1) always pop off the lip - whether its onto a rail, in a pipe, or off a kicker

2) spot your landing - this is just sorta common sense, but sometimes i notice im looking at other things like kids that might be in the way

3) stomp your landing - for me stomping almost always ensures that i wont land backseat and it is also important because when u start spinng, coming out of your tuck and stomping will land u a lot more tricks

hope that helps, and dont get down on yourself if u get a lil roughed up, it happened to everybody when they started learning

yep, if you are really scared for some reason, learn 180s/switch 180s on flat ground, just jumping. Then throw them off rollers, then off tables, then wherever. Go for 360s whenever you feel really comfy on whatever jump you are hitting, if you aren't nervous they will be easy to learn.

Take all possible oppertunities to practice skiing (turning, stopping, everything you do forwards) backwards, some people find it easier if they stagger their feet and lean forward a bit.

took me quite a few years of riding before i started pulling things in the park but u just got to get comfortable with it and try it don't be afraid... if u fall o well... get up and try it again

start small and work your way up to bigger stuff. I started with 180s and did those until i could do them perfectly then i went up to a 360

Yea, its also handy to get into the bait of learning tricks unnatural as you go. Once you get the 180 clean, spin it the other way until you can grease that clean...and then keep moving up. Ride On man, good luck.

Rock on dude! Embrace the new school! I have been skiing since I was two, and racing since I was five (I'm 16). I always liked to jump and shit, but only got into freestyle two years ago when a friend I had just met lent me some twintips. As long as you have a solid skiing background, things will come relatively easy as long as you don't pussy out. When I started doing rails I would fuck myself on them because I wouldn't turn fully sideways and I would slip off to death every time. Once I went balls to the wall and let my natural skiing balance take over, things came VERY quickly. Another hard thing to get used to was not getting penciled out on spins, because my race coach taught me how to spin threes old school. Just throw a safety grab, and you should look pretty good in the air. Also, if you live in New England, Hit up waterville valley's little slammer park. It's PERFECT for learning 180's and small threes.

2 things:

i just got into freeskiing too and am going to learn some spins. is it easier to start out in the park or to build a kicker in the back country with a soft landing? or does it not really matter

and when you say 'penciled out' is that just your legs and body are straight, instead of being all nice and tucked?

drop some 80 foot cliffs to start

My first 180s and 360s were on a 5 foot backyard jump. Then take it to the park, it becomes easier when the jump is bigger, just fucking do it.

Don't make my mistake though. I always just jumped and never did rails until this year. I can do a backflip but can't slide a 40 foot rail yet. Kinda pithetic. But hell, everyone has to start somewhere. Just commit, and go for it. And don't worry about fucking up sometimes...everyone has to start somewhere.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

^ if u arent gonna make an attempt to actually help him, dont post shit like that

Oh, and some other things, don't make the mistakes I made. If you do this stuff, you can be a real good freestyle skier, even when you arent THAT good:

Learn how to ski switch REAL good. Not just straight. Carve damnit.

Don't hold out on rails. Learn jumps and rails...get some good grabs and spins, but also be able to slide a rail well.

Those are the two big things I didn't pay much attention to until this year or last year.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

haha yes learning does hurt but ull get it

destroy, you've asked that like 3 times already, and all i have to say is, common sense, think about what your asking, your gonna learn a trick so you realise your going to fall, now what would you prefer, falling on and ice landing, or landing on something soft? i mean i dont think its taht hard to figure it out, but anyway, keep it up all you guys just learning

what the hell are you gonna do 1080ryebread?

You should prolly just get comfortable with huge jumps/landings before you start spinning and tricking. Worked for me. When I was trying new stuff I didnt worry so much about landings. Thats my advice anyways.

Thanks so much you guys for all this advice. Barring Lateralis's advice to do 80 foot drops and stuff I think I'll be using it all.

I went last night for a bit and definately need to get used to the whole concept of skiing backwards first. Just doesn't feel natural to me at all but I'll get used to it soon.

Also am AMAZED at what some people can do on skis. First I am 22 years old....as I learned last night this is apparently a geezer in the twin tip world. But there were kids last night doing things that I would never even think of doing on skis. My old man bones might break! Regardless I was so impressed at what some kids were doing.
