Damn thats gnar! What happened? Surgery?

I went off a jump with wayyyyy to much speed and i was backseat so i landed like 60-70feet down on a 30ft jump right no my back and my right femur just snapped over my chest. I had surgery and there is a rod in my leg now. It’s only been 2 days since the accident

Friend broke his from a bad cycling fall. Got a titanium rod put in. This was a few months back but slowly he’s gotten better by staying the course. He went from barely being able to stand to walking around now. Wish I had more to add, but the recovery is visibly happening.

Dang thats gnar!! I got super lucky over shooting a junp when I was younger. Cracked a couple vertebrae, prolly should have snapped my femur but got away with hairline cracks.

Got any friends you can hang out at your spot and play skate or something? Being laid up after surgery is always tough. Hopefully you got some good people.

Obviously "try to stay positive" but easier said then done.

You ever play the guitar? Could be cool to pick up a new hobby where you dont have to go anywhere.

Surgery go pretty well? Whats your time frame to being able to walk?

Hey man sad to hear that! My personal experience was that the first 2 weeks are the worst since you are also healing from the surgery itself. After that time you generally are allowed to slowly put pressure on the leg and do some physical therapy. That is when you will start to feel that the leg is healing and functionality comes back step by step every day. What helped me the most in the meantime was to focus on physical therapy and making sure you spend time outside the house daily even if it is an only 10 min stroll on crutches through the neighborhood. Good luck, you will be back soon!

Did my left one 2 years ago, but got lucky and have no hardware. Not sure what your rehab situation looks like, but after you get over the first couple weeks be really vigilant about keeping whatever range of motion you can in your hips. The fracture will heal on its own time, but the thing that's left implications for me was residual hip/lower back pain from muscle imbalances.

It's really hard to avoid your crutching/hopping leg becoming ripped and shifting your posture as you move and stand around, and when not getting somewhere you'll be sitting. All around it just spells a bad time for hip mobility. I feel like had my doc/OT stressed that a little more when I got out of the hospital it would have helped my healing process since I had a couple month gap in between my injury and starting PT.

Also:

sleep with a pillow between your knees

if you're going to elevate your leg support it at the knee

get outside and talk to the homies

and play a lot of Shredsauce lol

tl;dr stretch

Surgery went well, rod is in and I just took a walk with crutches today but no pressure on the foot for 4 weeks

thats rough good luck on the recover! I’m currently 8 weeks out on a tib/fib break and surgery and I’m already starting to limp around without crutches a bit at home and at work. If you have the means to afford pt or insurance will cover it be diligent about it from the start, I don’t have insurance and have been doing all of my own pt which isn’t ideal. In the meantime while your bed ridden find something productive to do even if it’s just reading some new books. I spent way too much time smoking weed and laying around the house watching every ski movie I could which in turn made me pretty depressed for a couple weeks as I missed the last month of my season. Use something like a shoelace or strap to assist moving your leg around getting into bed, the car, on the couch etc. highly recommend the bedside urinals they give you at the hospital you can get them on Amazon because getting out of bed to take a piss in the middle of the night is a pain in the ass. Sorry don’t have more to add about the recovery since my injury is different but stay positive some days are gonna suck and really test you mentally remember little things to be happy about

Hell yeah. Good to heat it went well and you can start toward walking in a month. Take it easy for sure. Don't rush things. Def want it to heal proper. It's hard. I've def come back from injuries way too soon. Idk, things healing properly is kind of pivotal to the rest of your life. Sometimes doctors are conservative but don't get too sendy.

Wish you the best man! Hope you can somehow get outside with people and not be stuck at home. Hope you can keep your head in a good spot. Def reach out to friends if you're feeling down!!

Heal up!!!

10weeks from injury/surgery to hike and ski off mt glory on Teton Pass for me. I also blew up the other ankle at the same time.

Keys to success start with attitude. Use the down time to accomplish something you normally don’t have time for. I found an internship that set me on my successful career path. I also really like the suggestion to pick up an instrument.

Keep your chin up. Bones heal. And rock your PT. I also rode my bike everywhere as soon as I was able.

My guy [tag=95085]@ShredwardStomps[/tag] might be able to share some of his learnings from his experience. Not sure if he uses this site but his IG is the same handle.

Do good rehab and make sure to get the "spring" back in your legs. I broke my femur at 12 and did ok rehab cause I was twelve, but my healing was pretty long cause there was complications that lead to me losing all my muscles in my leg. I got the muscles back while doing physio, but my impulsion wasn't the same when i came back to doing normal sports, and it took me a while to get that back. I would skateboard a lot when i was young and quit skateboarding after breaking my leg, and skateboarding was really good to have good legs in shape. So rehab is one thing, and then doing the sports you were doing before you broke your leg I would say is key to getting back in good shape

1) Download language app like Duolingo

2) Learn Japanese

3) Recover

4) Ski that sweet japanese powder

Go nuts with putting GOOD things into your body. To heal a major break AND surgery, your body needs a ton of good fuel to get the healing process going. Drink LOTS of water, and milk if your body is good with it. Since you aren't moving a lot, you might not be as hungry, but try to eat as much as you can. Eat GOOD FOODS! Get in a lot of protein and greens, they have the fuel that your body wants to push into the healing areas to get it going fast. TAKE VITAMINS! Like I said, your body is pushing a ton of blood and fuel to the leg, and your body needs all the help it can get. Do some research to figure out which supplements will be good for your healing process.

Aside from food, do everything you can to keep your mobility up. Move as much as you can without aggravating the injury.

Hey mine's made of metal too! You'll be okay. As everyone else has said, take rehab and exercises very seriously. Take care of your body. Hydrate well, eat well. Work hard, but let yourself rest when you need to. It's a long road, but the end is very rewarding.

I don't even think about mine anymore. Skiing, biking, whatever, it's just my leg. There's metal in there, yeah, but sometimes I have to remind myself. It doesn't hold me back skiing whatsoever, in fact, I think I had some of my best years in the park after breaking my femur, which I never thought would happen. Old nagging knee injuries affect me much more than my femur these days.

Stay positive! As soon as they clear you for weight bearing, get after it! Feel free to reach out directly if you have any questions for me.

Also this. You'll find where the made the cut in your hip to get the rod in there just... doesn't work anymore. It's a weird feeling, but those muscles support your whole torso. That's really where the rehab comes in. You'll do a lot of leg lifts and stuff like that, and it's SUPER important to be diligent with those.

Yup. Broke my femur in a car accident in 2004.

They put a rod in your leg?

When it's time to get off the opioids, take it really seriously so you don't become an addict. Physical withdrawal will be painful and very real.

I spent the next three years doing physical therapy to get back to basics.

Hit me if you need recommendations on physical therapists. I know the very best.

uhhh... 3 years to get back to basics? I'm not sure we want your PT recommendations!

I broke my knee in 2021 winter skiing and had a small fracture in my femur and tibea, as well as straining my mcl. My recovery was quick, but if there’s any advice I could give it would be:

1. to follow absolutely everything your physio and doctors tell you to do. I slacked off a little at the end of my physio and a year later I had to revisit some of the excersize s

2. set goals for what you want to do after your recovery and don’t forget that it will only end sooner if you follow your recovery plan/physio excersizes

3. find things that allow you to enjoy life and stay fit while injured. You could still go to the gym and do only upper body stuff and core stuff which will help your come back stronger

4. there’s plenty of other skiers that have gone through the same thing, talk with them abt it and watch andri ragettlis road to recogery it’s a banger and it’s sure to inspire you

hope you have a good recovery

Forgot to also mention: make a schedule for your day so that you don’t end up wasting time laying in bed when you have free time and make sure you push yourself like you would in normal lofe

Thanks everyone for the reply’s. My leg is feeling amazing but my knee is not. I have to go get an mri or something but my speculation is i tore one or a few things in my knee and it’s going to suck to do rehab.

That’s a bummer, hope the MRI goes well, are you insured on all this stuff?

I broke my femur skiing, severed a lot of my IT band in the fall. Hit PT hard. Full recovery took about a year but I went for a easy ski three months later. Take recovery seriously and keep positive, it can be a motivator and you can come back even stronger. And you will have to really try hard to break it again with that rod, so that’s some insurance on your future.

Still my most memorable day skiing ever.

Just got cleared for weight bearing, PT and driving. Super stoked on everything just hoping my knee is all good. Doc says he doesn’t think i tore my acl so that’s really reassuring.

did we ever find out how you broke your femur? there's always a story!

oh i don’t think i ever said anything. Pretty much I was feeling out the jumps at timberline in public park and I hit the first and didn’t think i had enough speed for the second so i sat skiied in and went way to fast while standing up and slowly started rotating backwards midair. I landed on my back way past the landing in the flats and my right femur just snapped over my chest. not fun

your leg snapped over your chest? dang!

when I overshot a huge DH bike jump all those years ago the time in the air was wild. knowing that it was going to be too much to handle. when I crashed I knew immediately I broke my femur, but didn't feel the pain because of the shock [Search and Rescue got to me within 30 min and gave me morphine]
