Just a few Words I Wanted to Share

Skiing represented a very necessary personal sense of being unimpeded. I couldn't comprehend responsibilit when I knew skiing. I knew skiing well. You couldn't sneak an edit past me nor news of who was now sponsored by whom because I worshipped the two slabs of wood I strapped my feet into every weekend and I was fucking happy. These were the days of soaked T-shirts that boastfully and loosely suspended over your knees, sheltered by a "custom" hoodie you sewed an opposing-colored stripe in the middle of. You hunted the internet for the loudest, most menacing rap song available to plaster under your clips because the ignorance was so uninhibited. We were fucking happy. Currently, I'm laying in my girlfriend's bed while she sleeps and I stay awake watching edits from eight years ago, reminiscing on when skiing had a passion for being carefree. We all grow up and lose touch, but maybe you needed this reminder to fight back. I skied once this year and my younger self would kick my ass for that and justifiably so. I don't know where I was going with this, but fight back and don't lose touch.

Bring back backyard set-up edits, the Salomon G-Suit, oversized skis, cutting off your sleeves, and afterbang among other things. Thanks for reading my ramblings.

I didn't even ski park during this time, but reading this(among other things) made me wish I had. I wonder if people will say the same things about this era in skiing as well.

I need to go skiing now.

Call me a nut but I like where skiing is going right now.

you're a nut.

OP is so accurate. Loved the part about the custom hoodie with the opposing colored stripe in the middle haha.

it's all a part of growing. skiing obsession ebbs and flows really just like anything, and as you grow older other things take precedence, that's just life. there wasn't too long ago that i would set aside money to buy every single ski movie that came out on itunes, and I would watch them religiously, even the tgr and msp movies. now i really just buy a couple to support some friends and couldn't tell you the last time i watched one. after years of seasons that ranged from 70-120 days on snow, a few years ago i consecutively had maybe 20, then 15. it comes and goes. thankfully this year i found the time and the drive again and had so much fun, got probably 40-50 days in. you'll do the same. it doesn't take g-suits to spark that, i mean fuck, that kid in superunknown finals that had a bunch of his shots on a dry slope was enough to get me fucking amped on the future.

I actually like the way style is developing. I dislike the way national teams and the comp scene kinda separates itself from the rest of the skiing scene.

I'm kind of glad that skiing is developing more and now there's many different styles. Don't get me wrong I still love watching edits from 2009 with guys like brogan or wallisch afterbanging the shit out of every trick but at least now style has branched off more and different skiing looks better to different groups of skiers. There's still people out there killing it in their same Salomon g suit from years ago but others have evolved into doing sniper taps and quad swaps with tight pants on and there's nothing wrong with that.

I think this thread is a bit sad. I also loved the oversized days, but I think people still love skiing as much now as they did then?

Is OP begrudging progression?

Not trying to argue with you here. Just interested to know if you think there's a solution to this supposed loss of spirit within the sport?

PS: heavyhead that shit

I think OP was just reminiscing on like that time in skiing and more or less saying not to lose touch of skiing as a whole. I didn't see it as him being negative about where the sport is now in terms of progression or anything like that. I dont know. I could be wrong.

OP isn't telling us that his era was the best. Op is telling us to hold onto that feeling whatever it may be. That era is just what embodies it for him. cobsidrrering he only skied once this year I imagine he feels quite detached from wherever we are now as a community, but he can go full nostalgia for when he was recklessly in love with skiing.

That same era was when I fell in love with skiing. I'm lucky to still be able to look upon skiing with a sparkle in my eye and continue to avoid traditional life.

This.

I'm the best part of 30. I work a corporate job. I'm married. I'm probably everything you think you'll be once you've sold out and stopped skiing.

And yet I still ride 40-50 days a year. My favorite place to ride is still in the park. I still buy every ski movie in the fall and check NS daily in the summer. I've been here for 15+ years and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

Point is, dedicate yourself to something and you'll never have to look back because what's happening now is still the best part.

Holy shit that's beautiful. Best words I've read in a while.

If skiing was still like it was in 2008 then that era might not be looked upon as fondly as it is now that it's in the past. There have been a few instances on NS when people have wanted to recapture the "Golden Years" and like people have said, the bigger this sport gets the more branches of style there will be. There are skiers who still represent those old school techniques and it just makes it that much more special when you see Jossi afterbang for 75 feet at the dew tour. But I full on agree that those old clips are some of the most fun to watch. I watch refresh once a year.

God has bestowed upon you the mouth of an angle lol

Words of wisdom right here

Dont have to tell me to fight growing up. I'm 38 no kids, wife, or girlfriend. Only been skiing six years and still very much in love with new school skiing, and yes I park ski. My knees and I probably would not be this geeked up over skiing if I would of started young.

Honestly, though skiing has changed over the year, what you're saying is more do to your age and growing up than skiing itself.

If you can find some friends and just go out and have a good time. Who care about age or what you're doing. Maybe with work you can't get out as much. Maybe your knees are trashed and you can't send the big jump line. None of that matters. Just download the loudest, most menacing rap song and get your ass out there. Even if you're just beeing goofy as fuck in the kiddie park for a while. Trying new shit or throwing it back to tricks like the hippie killer etc.

Just have fun.

We definitely tend to become more boring as we age through life. Less energy, less excitement and more likely to be butthurt about stupid things than out there smiling with that carefree attitude.

I've noticed this for myself, but I will say that a good run blasting through powerder, swangin around some trees, getting low as fuck smokin some turns on the groomers, or just sending some lofty airs through the jump line. I get this huge fucking smile on my face. It's like for that second all the bullshit from age, work, and life in general peals back and I'm a kid again just having a blast being alive.

Sure we have more responsibility. Life can be a lot more serious at times. That said, make sure you're taking some time to do what you love. You clearly miss skiing, and the good times it brought you. You need to get your ass back out on the slopes. If you want, wear the most ridiculous outerwear you can find. Bring a few beers. Crank that obnoxious rap song and have a blast. Life's too short to not have a good time.

See ya out there.

Im still rocking the "custom" tall tee. Im thinking about picking up some sewing string and a needle and sewing some designs on to my pants, but they are siver cartel and idk if i want to ruin them.

RIP siver cartel

To go along with what borty said; skiing seems to take away all pressures of life. I could have a whole 20 page research paper due the next day and if I go skiing I don't even give a shit about that paper. It just moves to the back of my brain and doesn't come back until I'm off the mountain. Its beautiful that way
