jumping off chair-lifts

It snowed so much a couple of years ago at alpine, they had 'Jump Off the Lifts Day' where you could jump off at designated spots. I didnt get to do it, but I did hop out of a stuck chair once into powder, it was pretty sick.

I would, and could have, but the park is right at the top of the lift. Alpine is sweet for doing that.

All of you sound pretty stupid to me. The lift can derail if you jump off of it. I work the lifts at my local mountain. I'm glad that those of you who jumped off and got caught got in trouble. It's ski patrol's job to keep the mountain safe. Sure, some of them are a pain in the ass and on a power trip, but without Ski Patrol alot more people would get hurt. Plus, when you get hurt, who do you think gets to haul your stupid ass off the mountain. None other than the ski patrol that you give such shit to. SO give the patrol a break, stay on the lift, and quit trying to be so big and bad.

Life is simple: Eat, sleep, ski.

Apparently throwing snowballs at moving vehicles is a felony and can land you in prison for a year. Who knew?

I am on the National Ski Patrol in the WNY region(Patrol E064). Jumping off a lift is possibly the most dangerous action you could do. It is VERY possible to derail a chair from the wheels, especially if it is a small chair. If the cable moves about 3 inches to either side it will miss the wheels. After that happens the counterweights at the top and bottom of the lift will be over stressed by the sudden change and are likely to begin bouncing--which in turn will cause the cable to bounce so much that people will probably slip under the safety bar and fall out of the chair. Is this something you want on your conscience? At my patrol we are instructed by management to detain anyone we find bouncing chairs or jumping from chairs. Then management takes away their lift ticket (and season pass) and they are NEVER aloud on the hill again. They are also blacklisted so they cannot get a season pass from any other local areas. Don't do it man, because if I'm the one that ketches you, you won't be skiing for a long time.

5 kids at my local moutain did it while me a a guy from the ski partol were right behide them on the lift he said he had to go take their season pass away for 3 weeks them jumped off and chased them down ucks for them

remember when you drop you are not gonna drop straight down if its steep. Just a tip and no the lift doesnt derail.

me and my friend did that the other day and deffinatley throw ur poles first. youll be glad you did. and if you can, try and click outve ur skis first, but thats kinda if ur landing on ice and would have to hike neway. it helps ur legs. and just get outve ther quick.

well neway hes like, u wanna do this. so im like yeah. and i threw my shit and kinda turned and grabbed onto the bar on the side. i kinda turned around fakie and he did the same, i kinda hung ther and when he jumped, the whole lift shook so much, forcing me to jump. just commit to the damn thing and i think youll be fine. just dont close your eyes. and also clicking outve ur skis will help u run away faster. i got a bruise now cuz the lift gouched me in the chest. so jsut commit and jump and idk.

maybe youll die doing it and we wont have to listen to your stupid posts.

Let me tell you all a story. When people jump off chairs there is a good chance of a mass-casualty incident. In the event of a mass casualty incident the ski patrollers are taught to use triage.

Triage = The process of sorting patients based on the severity of injury and medical need, to establish treatment and transportation priorities.

What this means is that the ski patrol will show up after you derailed the lift, or bounced everyone else out of their chair, and begin the triage process. During this process we will walk up to each injured person and put either a green, yellow, red or black mark on their forehead.

Red means high priority, immediate transport. Yellow means delayed priority, second transport. Green means low priority, they send them to the hospital after the reds and yellows are already gone.

Black means deceased, or 'nonsalvageable patients'(OEC 4th edition, pg. 717). If your not breathing, you have major arterial bleeding or major open wounds--then we mark you black, lowest priority, last to be transported. We leave you there in the cold to die, while you watch us try to save everyone else.

This is what chair jumping has lead to in the past--mass causality incidents. Do you really want to cause something like this?

^ Yes, practically every patrol-type person trained is taught to do this. Its a part of training everywhere where there are a lot of people in one place, or where lots of people can get hurt.

So, in summary...

You can derail a lift by jumping off.

It's very dangerous, you can hurt yourself and others.

It's really not a cool thing to do anyway, and actually is quite retarded.

*As a side note, I jumped off a rather high lift before. It was fine untill I hit the ground, when my knees hit my face and split my lip open, and then I had to ski down bloody as all hell.

i heard about a guy who tried 2 jump on a lift when they were closing it down, and when he was half way up the mountain the lift shut down cuz ever1 went home. so after like half the night he decided he didnt want to freeze to death so he jumped. but he broke his back and/or legs and had to crawl to the bottom to call 4 help. so ya that would suck

Ok, I jumped out of a lift that was like 20 feet high into the branches of a pine tree. The branches were really bouncy so they broke my fall. Someone reported me to the ski patrol. When they saw me they chased me on a snowmobile but I skiied through trees and eventually hid in a friends cabin.

whata rush

Haha I've been chased by ski patrollers a few times, but never on a snowmobile... that's hilarious. Did you trick them into running into trees and having their snowmobiles explode in giant flame balls? Worst I've had was 2 guys in one-pieces chaing me down a double-black...they fell.

Hucker22, Your story is simply not true. You may not have noticed, but for years every ski area in the world has been dooing a final sweep. After the lift closes to the public the patrol and moutain crew ride up the lift and take a run down each trail to make shure there is none left injured. After we board the lift, the lift attendants don't board anyone else. So therefore your story could not possible be true, stop spreading lies.

Ski-Patroler, that story is true. I believe it happened at Snowshoe, WV, where it is an upside down mountain, with the lodge at the top. The person ducked the trail closed rope and skied down anyways. When he got to the bottom, no one was there, so he got on the lift anyways. he got halfway up, and the attendants got off at the top and shut off the lift, like normal. The guy was about to freeze to death, so he jumped off, broke some stuff, including his back, crawled to the bottom and called Patrol at the top of the mountain. He barely survived. But that is not a case of jumping off for the hell of it. That is a life/death situation, and he did what he had to do to live. Just don't jump off the lift while it's moving. Very Very Very stupid idea....
