Judging speed 4 first hit?

I usually just watch other people. If no one else is hitting it, then I just straight line it. Which I usually regret

look at jump for 10 15 seconds if small just ski in till you think your right then carve a little if its big practice run in and stop on it so you know stand there cruise down back to lift and hit it (only if your first other wise follow in)

I just overshoot them no matter if anyone else is hitting it or not I just like going way to big because I have a big fear of nuckling

If at all possible, watch people's approach and follow someone in. That being said, I've had to guinea pig a few largish features and it can be frightening to say the least - usually for those I eye it up and try and compare it to something else about the same size to get the speed...but I've certainly gotten it wrong and that's never fun.

you mean those things that help you get onto a rail? those are the only jumps i do. Jib4life blessed

if it's a true guinea pig first hit, like no one has hit it yet, it can help to drop in with the speed you think feels right and slip the cheese wedge of the jump. if you keep your speed for as long as possible and stop as late as possible you can kind of feel it out a bit.

that only kind of works though. my rule of thumb is go as fast as i think i need to go, and then take away two speed scrubs. i usually end up going deep but thats ok. just land bolts and you will be fine.

^this. I'm usually the one to test jumps out of the people i ski with and from my personal experience id much rather overshoot then knuckle and have had numerous times where i straight line a jump and take it to flat while all my friends are up top laughing as i soar over the knuckle windmilling all the way down

First time hitting the second jump at nationals I straightlined it because people said it was slow, but I had freshly waxed skis and hauled ass. I ended up overshooting the entire jump landing and kneeing myself in the face and getting concussed before I even took my runs. Earlier that week I had undershot the jump and nearly injured my heel really badly so I figured overshooting it was better. Both of them suck. If you're unsure on speed, speed checking and checking out the jump for a run is definitely a good idea if you want to avoid going to the hospital like I did...

dumb thread watch and ask people at the hill or ask to fallow some one in for the big air comps i always fallow a homie trough my first hit .

till people pass ur shit round on a bus then you cry.

Follow people that seem like they know what they're doing, or kick it and watch a few people.

I don't trust randoms verbal info anymore. At vail last year"You gotta basically straight tuck it" from multiple people. Took a huge speed check anyway and proceed to go halfway down the landing."FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

1) always straight line

2) think you have too much speed when you don't

3) psych yourself out and speed check 10 feet before the jump starts

4) takeoff

5) knuckle the shit out of it

6) collect toebang

this comes off on a ass hole vibe but it point less sorry op but just ask a friend or skier hit it don't need to go online there isn't a magical equation for the speed.

I think it is related bc its kinda point less sorry op not sorry .
