Joshua Bell plays in a DC train station and no one notices

its not that the guy was trying to make money, or trying to make people recognize him. he was playing amazing music at a very high level. he is one of the best at what he does, and for people to overlook such an amazing thing just becuase they have other shit to do, is the point of the article, or at least i think. its about stopping to smell the roses, right? you need to slow down and enjoy the things that you can, this guy put on an unbelievable show for over 1000 people and only 7 stopped to watch, for free. he advertises going to one of these great halls, and people throw out hundreds of dollars just to say they went and saw him play at so-and-so place, just to say they did it. they dont really care about the music, or maybe some do, but it doesnt seem that way. people are too worried about status these days to just enjoy something as beautiful as bach's best work being played by one of the best musicians of our time

good article,

good post

I used to not be able to stand classical music, but now adays I LOVE it. Its sad that such talent went unnoticed.

ditto, I read the whole thing and enjoyed it, I can honestly say that no way would i reconise him but I would probably have listened for a minute...I do enjoy classical music and have no problem saying that, no its not the most played thing on my ipod but it is nice to chill out with every so often.

lucky commuters, a great article, the bach piece mentioned, i agree is one of the absolute best pieces of music ever written. period.

but it's not exactly something that is entertaining, it's serious music that would never 'work' in a train station. if i'm listening to it, i have to be in a quiet room or be wearing earphones since there is so much to that piece. i have a recording of it, and it's one of the very few recordings that i own that i never tire of.

i heard him in concert 18 years ago, btw.

i come to this site to hear massive amounts of gay bashing, childest vagina jokes, and how kids are social retards when it comes to ski gear........not an essay on how some pro violin player didn't get noticed for playing in the subway.

If he wanted to get noticed he schould have played an arena, or some shit like that. Honestly, its not a social expearement, anybody could have told you that.

i can promise that if you heard Bach played at a level Bell is capable of and then you heard some random street music, you'd know the difference.

good article, i thought it was pretty rad.

that was an amazing story. thank you for posting it. just made my day better. really well written and its a crazy concept to think about. people are ridiculous these days. including the first few posters in this thread who didnt appreciate it. thanks again.

Good read.

I'd say the main reasons are that people don't associate with classical music at all, and some are in such a rush that they don't notice anything period.

i think the complete opposite and im probably the first person to say this- skierman that was a gay post- ll of you people who say this was gay are the people on the escelator- not giving a shit besides your own stuff

nope, seriously...classical music isn't popular. Im sorry, but it just isn't. Like don't get me wrong, i love to listen to some Bach once and a while, but don't ask me to name a synphony, or antyhing like that. That was great music....for its time, but its soo unaccessable to average people now. I only went to one classical music expearence, and everybody was a snob, and it was eliteism at its worse.

Im sorry, but these are the times, and honestly, i don't feel bad. I love to listen to my rap, my country, folk, metal, and indie music. Im not going to feel like a dumb ass if i walk by a musician playing music in the subway, then being told his is a mastermind. The last thing thats on my mind in the subway is music. Sorry guys ANYBODY could have told you what that article said. You want recognition, go to an audiorium, an arena, or an oprea house, not a subway.

i saw him in ny two or so years ago, and it was really the most amazing performance i'd ever seen, that was a moving article

hahaha

and that was an interesting article. I actually read the whole thing even though I have a ton of shit to do. I like the part about how every kid tried to stop and watch, but their parents drag them away.

i used to think that way. i used to hate bach's music until i heard the solo violin stuff, and i immediately changed my mind. it's awesome stuff.

plus he was one pretty major sex machine, like nine kids or something like that. beat that!
