What is skiing about then? MikD and the ghettos of New Orleans? If anything, I think the last 10 years suggest that skiing is about specializing and progressing the sport how you know best. For Pep that means leaving the park and rails for powder. For Jon it means focusing on doubles and building the sickest jumps (instead of doing whatever you think he should be doing--racing more?). For Tom Wallisch it means focusing on the park and rails instead of the backcountry or pipe. For Phil Casabon it means focusing on steeze instead of doubles.
If you think skiing is going too much in one direction, relax. Progress in skiing, skateboarding, snowboarding, etc. is dialectical. It moves to one extreme, then people catch on and move to a new extreme. Then that gets old, and people bring back the old extreme in a new, improved form (think about the doubles of the Schraab brothers, and how Jon brought them back).
