Jonah Williams SuperUnknown Winner

Yeah he deserves it. But i must say my favorite trick is actually from semi finalist Per Fernvik. His first trick off a kicker after his intro i think is awesome. Someone else watch his vid and confirm that it actually is a cool trick

I have a strong feeling that Siggers will be filming with Level 1 in the future anyways. I mean, the guy is an animal in the BC.

Couldnt have gone to a nicer guy. So stoked for jonah. Fucks yea

Literally this, all of this.

Jonah is the fucking man and really crushed it all week from what I heard, super well deserved.

I still maintain that this list of Superunknown finalists will be a lot like the Superunknown X finalists were several of them will end up filming with L1P anyways. I think everyone was impressed with a bunch of them.

Much deserved, Jonah's been killing it.

Also think Bendik has something going for him, I think we'll be seeing more and more of him in the future

Isn't he still like 16 or 17? He's gonna do big things with that style if he's still getting going.

Kid has an insane bag of tricks and flawless style. Love watching him ski.

With that said...

Jonah Williams should not have won SuperUnkown, let alone have even been there.

There is nothing "Super Unknown" about Jonah Williams.

-He is full on sponsored by Salomon, Saga, Dragon.

-He films with Pros and gets invited to Pro events

-He traveled the world skiing this past season

-Every edit he drops blows up

Not trying to take anything away from the fact that he killed it all week and won, or from the fact that he is a true talent on skis.

I am just saying that there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been picked up a major film company, gained more sponsors, and become a a prominent figure in Freeskiing without winning SuperUnkown. I would have rather seen it go to a true "Super Unknown"; someone that wouldn't have those opportunities without this exposure. Jonah already has crazy exposures and those opportunities would have came naturally.

Keep SuperUnkown true to its name Level 1... you guys would have signed Jonah anyway.

Do keep in mind that the winner was voted on and chosen by all of the Finalists- at this point its ultimately their call as to who wins...

Of course they voted for him... he is on a different level than the rest of the crew and is by far the best skier in the lineup.

That doesn't change the fact that, in my humble opinion, he shouldn't have been there in the first place. Again, you guys would have probably signed him in the future (if you hadn't already been eyeing him up and thinking about signing him this past season). The kid has been on an absolute tear and is only getting better/more popular. There are a lot of other really talented kids out there that could have used a shot at SuperUnknown much more than he needed it.

But whatever - stoked to see his seg in your next film. There is no doubt that it will be really damn good.

It would be really cool to see a break down of the process for determining a winner from the last 12 seasons. Every year it seems like no one really knows how a winner is chosen.

meh... you could say that about most of the Superunknown winners. I can't think of a single one who didn't have a ski sponsor.

Listen homie, its the nature of the beast nowadays. With the internet and cheaper and cheaper film equipment, there is a really small barrier of entry to put out content. Naturally the really good skiers are going to blow up, do you expect someone to save all their content for superunknown?

all of the things you listed are what happens in a break out season. If ski edit Internet had been the way it is nown from the start of Super Unknown this would likely describe every other super Unknown winner and a lot of finalists.

Jonah is an animal. before our team gave several recommendations to pick him up we had never heard of him. And he's from utah. we think he was very unknown (go ahead make the joke "it's called super unknown not very unknown.) and knew he had what it takes to win.

Big ups Jonah. Can't wait to see your video segments this year.

Yeah but maybe it's beacause you only know him well, beacause if look at any other athlete in superunknown, lets take dylan siggers, he has been fully sponsored by line skis for 4 years now and by Scott sports, you could make a list of sponsors for every athletes, you just know one guy better than the others.

just me or did the whole "winners circle" (if you will) scene on the NS snapchat seem incredibly lame and somewhat awkward?

There is no such thing as a "SuperUnknown"anymore. This contest (and it's name) came from a time where people weren't all over the internet as soon as they make a sort of sweet edit.

- News flash - every rider there has flow sponsorships, and flow sponsorships mean nothing, Jonah isn't making money at skiing right now, this is his chance to do that, and he's earned it.

- He has people who have recognized that he's got talent and he works hard so they film him, still not making money.

- Lupe was also on some of those trips with Jonah - he's not getting paid either, he had to pay his own way, just like Jonah (with maybe some help from supporters to get him there, but not much).

- It's not his fault every edit he drops blows up, and also this just means he's earned it more, cause again, he's still not getting paid.

At this point, Level 1 should just change the fucking name of the comp, cause this debate comes up every year. Again, there's no such thing as an unknown rider who can deliver high enough level content to be in a Level 1 film. The popularity of internet ski edits has changed it.

Yeah - cause the check got shown before Josh could say his speech/announce the winner, haha.

To reinforce some of this jonah asked us to help with his travel to the shoot and we couldn't, not that we didn't want to or feel conpelled. But literally couldn't. He did it on his own.

And to address the "no one's ever super unknown anymore" seems like a challenge. I'm looking at you 14 year olds. If you think you can win a super unknown in 2 or 3 years. Stop posting edits now. Show the footage to your friends, send it to sponsors, but don't let it out to the public. You could be the next actual super unknown.

Little catch up from the week...

I was honestly hoping for siggers. But big up to Jonah ! Everyone killed it. All those guys are going places

But you must realize that if Level 1 held a competition with true SuperUnknown skiers (skiers without any sponsors) they would not have nearly enough talent to be sponsored by Level 1. Any skier who has enough talent to be sponsored by Level 1 will most definitely already have some sponsors.

That being said, I hope Dylan Siggers is back next year cause his submission was insane. Also, I'd like to see him take over Newschoolers snap again next year.

You do realize that Jonah Williams didn't "blow up" until this winter, right? He's a stylish skier and I hope that he ends up going places after the SuperUnknown win.

I see why this is a compelling argument. One the one hand, Jonah absolutely threw down and did really awesome stuff. On the other hand, it would be really sick to see someone like Gabe Taube win. Quite a dilemma.

this post has been beaten dead but newschoolers kids perception of being "pro" and "well known" is so fucking far off from reality it will never stop blowing my mind

So true. I feel like kids on this site would have their minds blown if they knew the levels of support that some of these people get.
