Jon Olsson is killing it

He just scored a 14 and a 17 in two gs races in new zealand this week. he's super close to a top 100 ranking in the world in that event right now.

props to him. that'd be really hard to be one of the top freestylers in the world to having to make a name for yourself in racing

anyone know what compelled him to get back into racing?? kinda backwards from the normal progression it seems. maybe with all his success he's running out of challenges.

That's awesome. I saw video of him training last summer. It would be amazing if he made it into the Olympics. It would also be a huge FU to anyone that thinks that freeskiers aren't technical.

He's not skilled at racing becasue he is a freeskier. He's skilled at racing because he was a racer before he started freesking. Jon was quite a good racer back in the day actually.

Jon is pretty much the man. Sometimes I dislike what he has to say, but there is no doubt that he is an incredible talent on skis.

he has a bet going on to compete in the 2014 olympics. plus, he used to race a lot when he was younger and decided to just get back into it and do both

i read 14 and 17 and have no idea what they mean, but i suppose that is good haha.

Jon is a champ.

yeah that is amazing. You need about 20 points to get into World cup. It takes usually about 10 years of hard racing to get down to that many points especially in the European circuit.

He's an amazing racer, he crashed out today but I was talking to him and he's finshed 285 of the 300 races which is a phenominal statistic. He's a great racer almost as good as he is a freestyler. Such a nice guy was talking to him for ages at the bottom of the race course even after he crashed out he was still nice to everyone.

he was a racer first though. but thats kinda beside the point - lots of people grow up racing and switch to freeskiing

i think it's changing and yes they are going to become less technical. Before most guys were getting their start in moguls or racing when they were young and then switching over, but now I think there's a lot more kids growing up wanting to be a freeskier and spending all their time in the park with no poles and shit technique.

jon is awesome he will train for racing for weeks then go sesh a jump throwin some of the biggest/cleanest doubles

park is only one aspect of freeskiing though, i mean you can't say that steep AK lines and a lot of backcountry isn't tech. and let's not forget that you can still be really tech in park as well, i mean there are plenty of skiers in the park who actually practice their flow instead of just swinging their limbs around like an ape.

true true i was only talking about the park aspect of it. If you can rip sick backcountry lines you def have some skills and it takes technique to control yourself in those types of conditions. Im just kinda referencing a lot of younger kids that I see killing it in the parks but they look totally out of their element when on other varying types of terrain. This doesnt apply to everyone but I think kids are getting less coaching in skiing tech and more in specifically park tech, which are two different things I think. In the future there will be less people who could do something like Jon is trying to do now.

What an amazing athlete he is. By reading his blogs I can see how extremely driven he is to reach his highest potential, never giving less than110%. I think it's great he is back into SL, and who knows, maybe we'll see him in the 2014 Olympics!

That's sweet. Jon ripssssss.
I'm glad to see that he isn't one of those park rats who can't carve a proper turn, and keep their skis within an inch of eachother, and lean back when they turn because they're concerned about looking steezy. Definitely rooting for Jon as a fellow racer and freeskier.

iv seen some kids who are amaze in the park but barely can carve outside of it its pretty pathetic i think i mean i think every skier should know how to carve and atleast be able to ski pow, groomers, etc properly

He won some Swedish national big mountain event a couple of years ago. But I agree that he needs to do this more. Way too much time on groomers for my liking.
