Johnny depp as the riddler ? what?

It’s one of the biggest — and most hotly debated

— questions in fandom…which actors (and characters) will director

Christopher Nolan enlist as a villain for his third “Batman” film?

Rumors have abounded since the release of “The Dark Knight,”

and Nolan has remained fiercely tight-lipped. But now, has one of his

main players revealed some of the biggest casting news of the decade?

In an interview with MTV News conducted just hours ago at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine

— there to promote “Is There Anybody There?” — seemed to confirm rumors

that the next installment of the “Batman” film franchise will feature

two very well-known names playing the roles of The Riddler and the

Bumbershoot Bandit, The Penguin. “They’ve already got them in mind,”

said Caine, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the

Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.”

So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids,

right? Except for one thing…according to the actor, he confirmed the

news through the studio itself.

“When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do ‘The Dark Knight’

next, I didn’t what that meant in Batman terms,” related Caine, who

plays Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘What’s

the story?’ and he said The Joker. I said, ‘Oh, s–t! How are you going

to top Jack [Nicholson]?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve cast Heath Ledger. And I

went ‘Ha! I couldn’t top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.’

And he did.

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to

make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going

to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny

Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said,

‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]more

While rumors of Depp and Hoffman have been hot topics around the

upcoming film for quite some time, this is the first instance of one of

the film’s stars speaking about the news, as well as Caine citing an

albeit unnamed WB executive.

Meanwhile, when asked if he’s spoken to Nolan about the news or the

next installment’s script, Caine made mention of Nolan’s vacation, and

hinted that, “No. He’s gone. He’ll come back with a script sometime.”

UPDATED: PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN RESPONDS, DENIES RUMOR.

Sounds like this news could be legit, Bat-fans — Depp as The

Riddler and Hoffman as The Penguin! Good choices? Think someone would

be better suited to portray the villains? Let us know in the comments!

i didnt think theyd do another batman with christain bale (since they can include the joker) they better top it, otherwise it will just piss me off, that they ruin a great franchise to try and make more money, and it IMO it would disrespect heath's best work

johnney depp as the riddler is the only possible combo that could come close to the joker. He's the perfect person for it

That will be another great movie. Johnny Depp is a great actor and can play the riddler perfect, especially because it will show the darker side of the joker, not just the crazy part

he does it to disguise his voice, you are dumb. end of discussion.

and yeah, i thought that right after i watched dark knight...depp as the riddler would be insannnnneeee.

everyone says that but it's so he doesn't reveal his identity...thats the point of it obviously, but yea still annoying

Dope as shit. I also just heard that he's going to be playing the Mad Hatter in a live-action Alice in Wonderland movie. That'll be fucking sick.

as long as christain bale is still batman i will watch it...he plays batman really well...and i think depp would be amazing as the riddler

not only did depp sign up for the riddler, he also signed up for another pirates of the caribbean, he also is the madhatter for alice in wonderland, and will be playing tanto in the lone ranger

Depp would make a great madhatter, is it true that the movie is going to be all CGI? And i also heard its coming out in 2010?

depp is really the ONLY actor out there right now who could play the riddler, think about it.

and jdepp

would be epic

believe it or not, the next batman is rumored to be filming in Vancouver of all places. New York, Chicago,.......then Vancouver as Gotham? I don't see it. That being said, it'd be pretty cool to see them filming it here. Regardless, with Nolan in charge he'll make it awesome. I had heard Depp as the Riddler before, but not Hoffman as the Penguin. If that is true, holy crap. Amazing.

Rumor has it that Philip Seymour Hoffman will be joining Depp in the next one as none other than the penguin, IMO that is a very good choice of actors for the penguin, Hoffman kills it in everything hes in.

I did read the original post, however i believe i interpreted Rowens post the wrong way. I was being sarcastic and i blew it, im leaving now

sweet, maybe i can see some of the stuff around town, but i do agree with you, i don't see Vancouver as being good for portraying gotham, but who knows.

Johnny Depp is the man.

Edward Scissorhands...classic.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape?...another good movie.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...trippy and awesome to watch while you get drunk or high.

Sleepy Hollow...great.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico...awesome.

Pirates of the Carribean..he plays an awesome drunk.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...his character freaked the fuck out of me, but that's what he was shooting for...that Michael Jackson feel.

Sweeny Todd...whoodathunkit?

Depp would be a sick ridler.

as long as christian Bale is batman, alfred is the same guy, and no fuckin spandex it will be a sick movie

still does not change the fact that it sounds like shit, AND its annoying. everyone who left the theater all three times i saw it had that as their only minor complaint.
