Hey, anyone here work in the ski industry? I want to get involved but don't really know what sorts of opportunities are available. Repping for a company seems kinda cool, but it also seems really competitive to actually get that sort of job. Thanks for any suggetions...

 
Working in the industry rules, but you need to cut your teeth first. Get a job working for a mountain, a shop, or a racing/freestyle team. This industry is an old boys club and you have to know people to accomplish anything. It also helps to have a good education, solid skiing background, and an open mind. Get connected, get some experience, and you'll get a job if you wait long enough. Go that route or be a bad ass like Eric Iberg say fuck it, go film your friends, get famous, and start your own ski company. Good luck.

 
easiest way in to the industry is probably to start teaching, or get a sales job in a shop. Then get to know everyone, eventually you'll have the right contacts and credibilty to move up (if you play your cards right).

Bigest thing to keep in mind, is that ^ is right, it really is an old-boys club. The people in the industry can either welcome you, or make it impossible. Try to not piss anyone off and always be yourself.

Its better to be hated for who you are, than loved for who you are not - awesome quote.

 
There is also professional ski patrol, ski instructing and moutain opperations(ex. grooming, moutain crew, artificial sno ect.)

my dad was on the ski patrol at mt. snow and an instructor/patroller at waterville. he said it kicked ass, even though they had to be up at the crack of dawn. I thnk I want to be a patroller cuz I like medical stuff and skiing

from what i know, ski patrollers get shit pay, but i cannot confirm that, i mean from what i know, also a cool job would be like a heli-ski tour guide. u get to ski fresh backcountry heli shit, tour rich shiity skiers, get big ass tips, and get fresh tracks everday and get paid!

Working in the industry is rad until you figure out that the one thing you'll probably never get out of it is a decent salary...

As jib_this said, dont expect it to be a high paying career. Sure there are some people who can amke some good money, but thats more the exception than the rule. You have to be able to truly love your job to make it as a rep. And you also need to learn to like traveling around in your car for a lot of the year.

Our Nordica rep last year put over 50,000 miles on his van in just over 6 months. Driving all around your territory can really suck at times, but it also has its rewards, so dont give up the dream yet...

 
very hard to get into, but once your in, your in. and you can switch companies if theres an opening you like, talk to your reps and ask if you can help out with shows and sales. then before you know it you will have a territory of your own

hmmm, i dont know what kinda shape i'm in... all the reps like me, except our old line rep, cause i knew more about their stuff than he did, and that made him look pretty bad in front of the rest of the store
