I'm 17 and have been trying to get a job for almost a year without any luck but when it rains, it pours. Yesterday I had two interviews. One was for a small, reliable Italian place at $8.25/hr working Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights. Those hours suck.

The second job offer was to go door to door setting up free appraisals for roofing, windows and siding. It pays $10/hr plus a $20 bonus for every appraisal that I set up, and 1% commission on sales. I shadowed someone doing the job and they had 4 appraisals set up in the 3 hours I was with him. It'll probably average around $20/hr but they don't go out in under 32 degrees or during rain, so its somewhat seasonal. I have to work 4 weekdays after school, 5 hours per day minimum.

My parents want me to take the minimum wage job at the Italian place. I think they're nuts. To the minute helpful section of ns, what do you guys think?

soon it is going to be too cold to do the appraisal job just take the minimum wage one. and where do you live that minimium wage is 8.25 it is only 7.25 for me :(

i fell for that 10+ years ago. if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. luckily it only took me about a week to figure it out. the difference i pull between vector and what OP stated is vector wasn't door to door, and they only "paid" by appointment, not hourly

I'd take the restaurant. Steady and consistent...

Plus the thing you have to realize about any door to door job is that unless you're selling girl scout cookies, no one wants to see you. No matter what.

And being that it's september, and they don't go out when it's below 32...it sounds like a poor time of year to start that job.

dude, the appraisal job is a scam. i know nobody who gets anywhere with those kinds of 'jobs'

if I were you i'd take the restaurant. the restaurant biz is a perfect for a first job....really teaches you how to hustle

Yup, take the restaurant job. I can tell you right now, working in the restaurant industry is super fun. I'm in my 3rd year and I love it. You just gotta not be a bitch and be willing to take a lot of shit for a while.
