Jibbers - Love 'em or hate 'em

FYI, Kristen Ulmer wrote a good article for the new Ski Press magazine in her Gardening with Kristen column.

Read the whole thing, not just the first two paragraphs (which I'm sure some will do and go off all half-cocked).

Wow, that was horribly written. Some people need some journalistic skills. Anyways, I guess I agree with some of the points in the article but it was so disjointed I'm not clear on which ones.

I read the whole article. I didn't like it.

'But Jeez, I’m not a com-

plete moron. If I were 18 again, with fresh verte-

brae, you bet your ass I’d be in the parks throw-

ing some flippy, twisty thing, myself. I’d have an

ego as big as J Lo’s butt.'

'and Frank Bear did a triple

twisting quad back flip in 1973… with perfect style and stuck the landing. Beat that. Jibbing is NOTHING SPECIAL.'

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

WOW.. ummmm how the hell did that person get a writing job? it reads like notes on someones diary.

And jibbing is not hurting the ski industry in any way, you could change that article around to talk about big mountain skiing and it would make just as much sense. even more because going to the backcountry takes mney out of ski areas pockets where jibbing doesn't. I guess jibbers aren't humble enough and should respect the great fun in sliding down a perfectly groomed blue square run all day. And stay out of the moguls! I hear they're dangerous!

i hate that article, it wasnt well written. She tried to be funny but failed. also, last winter i pulled my hamstring really bad. i couldnt ski for a week and hit jumps for about a month. but i didnt stop skiing, i just went skied without hitting jumps. i bet a ton of her 'true' skiers would have quit till it was healed. and i guess thats core skiing right?

wow, i mean, how many kids that race also ski the park, i know a bunch. and how is it hurting the ski industry, there are soo many kids that wouldnt be there, therefore the ski areas wouldnt have their cash, and be goin out. so is that killing the sport of snowboarding too, they are doing the same thing after all. by the way, what does std's have to do with skiing??

I race and ski in the park all the time. It is true though, there is alot of skiers that can throw crazy shit but cant even make a nice carved turn. BUt on teh other hand there are also people that can trow crazy shit in the park and carve a nice turn. These are the real skiers.

shit, i skiied for 11 years before i even hit a jump. now i focus mainly on park because i have been skiing my mountain for 13 years now and its gettin old. if i were to go out west or something or to a mountain i have never hit, i would check out the park, but i would also ride the rest of the mountain. on the east coast there isnt anything worth skiing so park is where its at

k yeah that writing sucked. needs to be organized. and yeha we're totally helping hte industry...so there

The article was pretty good. I hate the voice that the writer used in the article. She/He sounded like he/she was mocking us. Like wtf! When i'm older i'll prob be just doing normal skiing because i couldn't afford to break anything. And i'm pretty sure most of us on here know how to ski properly.

wow, she must know alot, she uses technical terms like flipy spiny thingy. With her excellent writing skill I wouldn't be surprised if she graduated from High School.

Why is she ranting anyways? did some young 'jiber' clip her or something?

That was rediculously stupid! My God! She obviously doesn't know anything about skiiers, or their lives. There definately are the kids who can't ski worth shit and still pull sick tricks, but a good majority can do both. Also, I know I'll never quit skiing. I went skiing for 3 weeks with bronchitis til the end of the season even when I was coughing up blood and a ton of other shit. The article was also horribly written, I could do better than that, and I'm definately younger than her sorry ass.

would she rather us all be snowboarding?

i still dont know waht side shes on. she says jibbing is good at the end, but writes the article like its bad. i dont know if shes being sarcastic or waht. what a dumb bitch.

That bitch deserves credit for writing a retarted article which while contradicting itself was hard to read and had poorly proven points. I hope the article was written as a joke or sarcasm or something. WTF does it mean jibbers can't turn, at every park I've been to the jibbers are the ones who drop infront of you on a tripple stage cliff during a powder day, and once the mountain is tracked throw down in the park. Ulmer is neither hot, nor is she the caliber of skier I ride with at squaw. I have no patience for these kinds of women.

yeah that was rather poorly written. it was tough to follow, i mean make up your mind. and yeah about the core skiers or whatever, i collapsed my lung last season in the park, and wasnt supposed to ski for 6 weeks at least. i was back in less than 2, and you think i am gonna quit when i'm 30? screw that, i'll probably have fake knees, but i'll still be out there every chance i get, hopefully teaching my kids how to ski so they can have as much fun with it as i am

Actually, snowboarding has people who are dedicated solely to specific aspects of riding, like pipe riders and big mountain riders and whatnot. Skiing isn't quite there yet, but its definitely headed that way, good or bad.

oh my god, she is so retarted. there is nothing id like more than to go to alaska and hit up all those huge lines, but i cant right now, because at my hill in mich, the park is all we have really, so she needs to go suck a dick

what a fat bitch, seriously, she talks about how it takes no skill, well last i checked until you become a good skier you can't flip a jump. she can suck my nuts because there are so many pro skiers that were PRO racers before, but realized that it sucks. i think for that reason big mountain skiing should stay in ski movies, to show closed mindend, jealous, asshole ski skeptics that not only are jibbers the best at throwing tricks, but they are the best skiers in the world.

InvictusProductions.com

i really disagree with her, for one thing she is speaking from a perspective of someone who is not directly involved in the culture so she shouldn't be judging jibbers, and also, its more fun then making turns going down a hill, and what she says can go the same way with other sports like skatebaording, ya you can't do it forever, but its still worth it no matter what... so fuck her.

'Keep on rocking in the free world'

I think some of you may not realize that she's been in skiing for a long time. And while you may think the article was poorly written and contradicting, it was actually well written for what she was trying to do with it. She was bringing up a bunch of different viewpoints which showed that there's a lot of different ways to view jibbing's role in the ski industry. And we all need to remember that although most of us here are involved in jibbing (which is one of the most televised parts of skiing) it is still a relatively small portion of the industry (don't forget the big picture). It is growing and it's here to stay but it's still in the growth phase. Don't be so quick to hate on those from other walks of skiing life. I know you all get pissed when they hate on you. What I got out of the article is that her stand is 'Hey...if it works for you, more power to you...but it's not for me and this is why.' And she makes some good points about what the future may hold for us physically. Cuz if you can't ski powder or just cruise...skiing will lose it's appeal as you get older and quit jibbing. I'm 26 so I've been jibbing and skiing longer than a lot of people on this site...and I can tell you that it gets a little harder to hang with park skiers everyday. Crashes take a little more out of you and you have to work more and more on keeping you head in the game. So don't forget that skiing is more than just our piece of it. We love being out there no matter what our skills or equipment.

FOCUS your mind.

I'd be surprised if even she knew what she was trying to say in that article. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, and yes she has been in skiing for a very long time but I don't think her views are any more relevant than mine would be on something like snowboarding or skateboarding. Writing someting like that the way she did it, as a member of the periphery of her subject matter, wasn't a very good choice. We can take that peice of writing for what it is, the opinions of someone trying to make sense of something new. Maybe there is some value in it but it wasn't my cup of tea.

you can't spell sick without ck

i didnt read the article...i have no hate for the park rats...i do like to ski the whole mountain and hit some 'natural' jumps...id like ot get better at all aspects of skiing and not just focus on one
