Jettas

I'm thinking about selling my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a 96-98 Jetta VR6 (or a 2.0, I havent decided). The insurance on my 4x4 is killing me and I need to save some money. Does anyone know how reliable and/or gas efficient Jettas are? I need some input, thanks.

my borther has one... its pretty good on gas

but the transmission is fucked up.. but he drives it like an asshole so.. he'll have that

They're awesome. I drive (my parents) 2001 Jetta, and it's a standard diesel, and it gets about 1000km on a tank (give or take 100). It's a sweet car.

i drive a mkIII (98) jetta vr6 and i love it. big difference between those and the newer ones. can get anywhere from 17mpg to 45 (you have to really try for that though). mine has 130k miles on it and still runs great..except for minor electrical problems but its german so that expected. vr6s are fast too - i hope you get one!

the 6 cilinder vw engines are supposed to be crap. that being said, vw is a german car company and so as long as it doesnt have a shittload of miles on it (not much more then 100k i woudl think) then it would be a good buy, as long as your mechanic checks it out first.

i was going to buy a jetta but everyone that i talked to said, unless its brand new its a p.o.s. i heard they just have a lot of problems and parts are expensive. i went with a toyota and the fucking thing has never had one problem. im gunna drive that car to the ground.

I have a 94 jetta and I loves it.

only prob is that jettas crap out after 190,000Kms, and they cost a lot to fix.

i have jetta right now (my second one)...be prepared for many electrical problems. Not a lot of places like fixing VW's...and the parts are fucking expensive.

The troll stole my Santa!

The VR6 isnt crap, it is a solid, reliable engine. MK3 jetta are solid offerings, and they were all made before VW started assembling their cars in Mexica, so they have that going for them. The only problems with them are electrical, but you will get a solid car wich will last a long time. If you are going for gas milage, get a VW TDI engine, you will get mileage comparable to a hybrid car and the Deisel engines last forever.

i got a used TDI for 13k and it gets around 50 mpg, last time i filled up i had 47 mpg, it's such a sick car, i love it

i have a 02 1.8turbo jetta. i get about 24 miles a gallon, 300 miles a tank. it was running real nice until last year when some unmarked construction fucked it up. had to get a new transmission. hasn't been the same, but still runs. definitely pretty cool

nice use of the searchbar. haha

but, jettas are pretty good cars, you just have to worry about repairs. youre gonna end up having to sell your left nut to pay for repairs.

i love my jetta, handles so nice pretty quick. takes a beating, been 100% reliable. some retarted problems whack trunk latch, and some electrical problems. other than that though its been perfect for me. I would recomend a jetta.

the 2.0 engine is such a dawg, it feels like you are driving a golf cart. on the other hand, the VR6 is decent. I was recently in the market and opted for a passat simply because I found a better deal, but I test drove a fair number of jettas and I would just recommend avoiding anything with over 100 k miles. And if it is a manual, you can expect the clutch to need replacing right about 100 k miles too

i think that all of volkeswagons cars are awesome! i have a passat. its super fun to drive and it gets pretty decent milage. about 26 mpg and jettas are smaller, so they will deff get better. i used to drive an 06 passat diesel turbo and it was sooooo fun to drive and got amazing milage, it got 39mpg and sometimes even better. im actually looking for another diesel engine volkeswagon and im gonna convert it so it runs on veggi oil. you can get jettas in diesel. i would deff recomend a volkeswagon made car, and id get a diesel, but thats just me, gas engine is still great though if you dont wanna pay the extra $$ for a diesel

buy it best car iv drove so far. until my sister crashed it 2 times. i wish i still had my jetta:(

Proof? My mother drives a 13 year old one, with over half a million clicks on it. Only major repair was the clutch. in 13 years.

buy the jettai fucking love my rabbit

yeah i hear thats the biggest problem. my buddy has one and 3 of his windows dont go down along with a bunch of other electrical problems. luckily the only window that works is on the drivers side lol. but other than that he loves his car

not when its super hot outside and the ac doesnt work either haha. oh and everytime i see you on here i will lose the a

game automatically, including now shit!

i'm just gonna go ahead and say that my dad has a 01 gli (v6, 6 speed), and the only problem he's had with it so far is that his check engine light comes on all the time (for no reason, the dealership checks it every time)

besides that, its a pretty dope car, its got quite a bit of juice too

sorry but wrong. MK3's aka ventos were all assembled in mexico. it should say "made in mexico" etched on the passenger window, under the door sill, etc. it does in my dad's 95.

I have MKIV with 160k miles on it, the thing is rock solid. The 2.0 is a good engine despite what people say. My car burns or leaks no oil whatsoever and I'm still on the original clutch. They will break down on you if you rally them though, thats what the VR6 is for. 2.0 is for normal driving only.

Hey man...
Is it a vr6 or a 1.8T? what year?
I have owned a 98 jetta 2.0, a 2000 civic si, and a 98 vr6 gti
My dad used to drive a 99 vr6 passat and now has a new 2.0T jetta.
I've been around VW pretty much my entire life. There fun cars to drive, but they are expensive to fix, as many people have brought up in this forum. For comparison, i like my gti more than my old civic si.
It sounds like your budget is around 8,000. For that amount of money, just to throw out some ideas, you could pretty easily get something with AWD like a 2002 wrx or an A4 with quattro or something. So often people buy a car without really considering all their options, I know I have. If you're really just concerned about looks, not drivability, then this car sounds like a good bet. VR6s are solid and it should last you a long time if you're nice to her. If i were you, I'd look into cars with AWD.

Jetta's are nice, pretty reliable. But if you want a car thats gonna last forever go with a honda or a toyota, not very aesthetically pleasing, but those things never die

^yeah the front end swap is kind of a trend.. or something. I don't like the golf lights that much, but its cool that its possible

At 100K+ make sure the timing belt and rollers and tensioner have been replaced. This is a $1000+ fix, and if it isn't taking care of before it breaks, it can trash your engine.

Take a look at a 4motion Passat, it is a bit bigger, and gets 3 mpgs less on the HWY.

i have a mk4 1.8T and its pretty solid. It pretty damn quick for being stock and the turbo is sweet. Ive had it to the shop before for a 600 dollar repair but that has been the extent of it. it is 01 with 119k on it so you cant really bitch when things need repaired

I have a 98 VR6 and I love it. It's good enough in the snow and fun as hell to drive the rest of the time. I drilled my airbox right after I got it, gives it a little better sound haha.
You will want a rack for sure though so keep that in mind, you do not wanna pack skis in it.

did you get the vr6? what are you thinking for mods? i have a vr6 gti, it has 2.5 in exhaust and cold air intake, im thinking this summer i want to either do headers, high flow cat, and chip, or lower it... but i have no idea.

I've been down the car modding road before, it's the biggest waste of money in the world IMO. I just bought a replacement for the piece that I drilled from vwvortex so I can put it back to stock when I sell it down the road.

i see where you're coming from. i enjoy the process and result very much so i dont think of it as that big of a waste of money

It's definitley fun, but I wouldn't put money into my daily driver again. Once my friend gets a good enough job we are gonna start building an LS1 powered 944. It's gonna be a flat black, evil little car.
