No it was real as in it was music that was actually meant to inspire people and mean something to them. Garcia and the band was not looking to play music to become famous or make millions, like today.
And this differs from every other form of music...how?
Let me guess: mainstream music isn't actually music. It's just an emotionless commercial stunt put on by a bunch of puppets and corporate suits to take your money. And anyone who doesn't agree is an ignorant conformist.
Lol. definitely. "Popular" music is shit. Thats all im saying. obviously you know that the #1 song in america is not going to be remotely good, and was probably not even written by the artist who is singing it. Sure there is other good music, i am not saying that there is only one good band that has ever existed, but the grateful dead is a genuine group that had great musical talent, and were able to make a venue full of people dance in a matter of seconds.
You don't need to take drugs to appreciate the dead. Listen to the lyrics of their songs. They aren't just simple meanings. They have deep meanings that were written in a way that the listener takes them as they see fit. So listen to a Dead song, think about the lyrics, search for what it may mean, and see how it applies to your life. Maybe you don't see the point in doing that with any music, but that is what the dead is to a lot of people.
You're saying that my opinion of The Grateful Dead is unsubstantiated because it is based on their music and not some cliché contrarian belief that popular music is inherently invalid musically?
I hate to throw around the "i" word, but if anyone is being ignorant, it's you.
No, im not at all.. And im not being ignorant at all. You think justin bieber and lil wayne have talent/ are popular because they are good? Not at all.
Lol. Try brokedown palace, stella blue, hes gone, uncle johns band, row jimmy, they love each other, missisippi half step uptown toodeloo, mission in the rain, sugaree, terrapin station, so on.
Proud of the fact that I only recognize 4 of those songs. All jokes aside, I dig the Grateful Dead and listen to them fairly often, but I have to side with everyone saying that hardcore Grateful Dead fanboys are pretty annoying. They are NOT the greatest band of all time, and to declare any band "the best band of all time" is pretty much fucking retarded.
Ugh. Did i or anyone else say that they are the greatest band? no the thread creator did say that garcia is god though. Which i cant say i disagree with. Haha just kidding
Later song, but I will always love Touch of Grey. Such a simple meaning presented in a beautiful way. That's the thing, not many bands can present such simple meanings so beautifully.
Then what are you saying? If I recall, you criticized me because I formulated my opinion of a band based on their music and not your (false) status quo that they were somehow special for writing music that was moving and meaningful to them.
I don't think Justin Bieber or Lil Wayne are remotely talented. However, to deny that their music are meaningful forms of expression to them is absurd. They are talented because the vast majority of consumers are musically incompetent, and therefore buy music that appeals to their simple understanding.
And what about the plethora of amazing bands that are also popular? Does that mean being commercially successful somehow revokes their artistic merit?
The thing is, The Grateful Dead weren't the first to do what they do, nor are they exceptionally beyond what many bands have been doing and still do to this day. Are they a talented band? Of course. Are they pioneers/gods? Far from it.
Again, I'm speaking in terms of music. Their ability to appeal to hippy culture is completely irrelevant.
That doesn't seem to be true for all of the music I DO love. The more I analyze Gilmour, DeBussy, Rypdal, Zappa, etc. the more beautiful they become. If you're going to turn your brain off to music, you might as well listen to pop music.
They were pioneers in many ways. The way they played is just a start.
They were pretty much the first to record everything, even the earliest stuff. things like the wall of sound. The dead and the people around them did some huge things for music. To deny that is stupid.
And i was speaking in terms of music not hippy culture.
I work at an extremely well known major label. and the answer is YES. being commercially successful does revoke their artistic merit. When these guys make music for major labels, they don't have their own musical intentions in mind, they have the publics, and what is going to make them the most money. The Grateful Dead did not have any of this stupid shit on their minds when making music, they did not try to appeal to a certain scene--they just got high and made some of the most awesome music ever created.
Jesus christ, Jerry=/=God. I love the Grateful Dead, but they definitely were not the most talented musicians of their time, especially Jerry Garcia, no hate for Jerry or the dead, because they started a whole new scene, a whole new genre of music (if you will). So many young dready dipshits are ruining the community the the Grateful Dead created. I'm not saying I know exactly what the Dead community was like, seeing that I am only 22, but seeing all the neo-hippies trying disrespecting what the Grateful Dead created is very disappointing .
ya there are some dumbasses that like the dead, but at the same time there are dumbasses in every "scene". bottom line is, Jerry Garcia played the guitar in a way that cannot be recreated by anyone else. And the only reason Jerry=/=God is because "god" doesn't fucking exist.
this doesn't mean the music is any good, it just means that a lot of people fall slave to the marketing schemes of major labels (and the marketing schemes are VERY good and detailed).
and about the beatles, that was when popular music was actually good. however, the beatles could not play live for jack shit, I would attribute that to how horrible ringo was. Yes the grooves he played were different than everybody else at the time, but at the same time he didn't expand on musical ideas at all and was a real bitch when it came to playing a drumset.
I've listened to the dead for a long time. Through all of high school, and I don't go to college.
But what's wrong with somebody starting to like good positive music. Never too late. Besides, a lot of people cross it off from preconceived ideas based on shit they hear from other people before even giving it a chance. That hippie jam music where the guitars go on forever with no music, blah blah, need to be on acid, blah blah.
People that hate the dead without even listening to it. Hating stuff without giving it a chance is straight dumb. And a lot of people roll like that in general.
One watch by night, one watch by day, if you get confused listen to the music play. roll away the dew
the great full dead is such a shitty band my HS band i day for 3 days was better then them. all my roommate did last year as play there music and almost all of it sucked.
yeah fuck the great full o deed, they are fucking terrible. I mean why listen to a bunch of dumb musicians play instruments? I could just go listen to some autotune music that is actually popular.
i do enjoy musicians playing instruments but the grateful dead does an awful job at it. i think the only reason my roommate like them is because all he would do is acid 24/7
