chris, whose name is 4D on here, rolled a '91 jeep cherokee with me in it. we rolled it twice and did a 180 down a 4 foot embankment and we were fine so i'd reccomend them.

i have a 2000 grand chero. with 60,000 miles on it, i love it. i almost wrecked last week caus ethere was a tree in the road and i didn't have time to stop before hitting it, i drove it going like 20 mph and my car was absolutely fine! like gets pretty good gas mileage and they are hella fast. from what i hear they don't do too well after 100,000 miles but i hear if you treat them good they last awhile. its all wether you treat it like shit and drive it like shit if its gonna stay together for awhile or not. i love mine though, the only problem i have had is my battery died awhile back and just blew one of my speakers but i listen to my music all the time on full volume so i am not surprised.

yeah, over 100,000 things start to go wrong. from what i hear most chrystlers seem to have some issues with air conditioning and transmission once they get old. i still love my jeep though ('96 with 150,000ish miles). i have a feeling its not going to last much longer though.

I have a 94 grand cherokee with 178,xxx miles on it. The original tranni just started acting up so I give it the thumbs in my book. However, the air conditioning does suck rocks as I have to recharge the fucker every summer.

my mom's jeep grand cherokee probably just died this morning. we're still waiting for the tow but, it doesn't start right now. it has 95K miles. other than that, it is (was) a nice car!

i have a 93 zj (grand cherokee) its got 200,000 beat to shit driving like a madman miles and every thing works perfectly. the inline 6 4.0L easily run for 250,000+ miles. stay away from the late 80's 4.2L carburated engines.

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

i always wanted a cj or a yj

get a 97 or newer if at all possible the wiring harness is a much better it has much higher end shit on it then the pre 97s!

the 4.0 inline 6 is an awesome motor take care of it and u can easily get 250,000 out of them!

i had an 87 and it ran damn good untill i was at like 282 thousand then i blew sensors and seized the motor!

hence why you want the new wiring harness!

a friend of mine has a 97 with 215 thousand on it and it is still running perfect!

another friend has a 90 with voer 300 thousand and it has only needed minimal work!

BAD.

nothing before 97 or 98 is a good idea for reliability. and seriously 177 K even in a jeep, is not reliable. carfax it too. but im amazing if it would pass a quality inspection

get a nissan new xterras are sick jeeps fall apart and are shitty on road suvs plus jap car parts are really cheep

except for nissans are far worse than a jeep!

granted jeeps are not the most durable cars but you can cheaply build a tj yj or xj that will wheel better than pretty much anything!

nissans are cars with awd!

older solid axle toyotas are the cheapest easiest to build rigs that will go absolutely anywhere

nothing else can you put a 5 inch lift cut the fenderwells loce it up and go anywhere!

newer tacomas are just amazing perfect power/weight ratio good axle perfect wheelbase!

nissans= underpowered grocery getters with shitty 4wd no high quality suspension components!

sorry bro

Ill agree that nissans are underpowered but they are designed to be every day cars that have the ability to go off road. They have very good stock suspensions and 4x4 ability for casual 4 wheeling. Jeeps fall apart at 100,000 every time and they have shitty on pavement ride. My pathfinder has 198 and it runs like it was new and nothing on the interior or the suspenson is broken. Also nissan is steping it up the 2005's have a 260hp v6 thats better than jeeps v8

sorry man...sounds like you have a case of narrowmindedness that alot of jeep guys do.

While the general idea that jeeps are the best wheeling machines around and they have the parts market to back it up. both nissan and toyota have built platforms that turn into very capable rigs. and they have alot of aftermarket gear to build them up with. Sure you can hack up a jeep pretty quick out of spare parts...but it takes alot more then that to build up a good vehicle. there more to a good wheeling rig then how high off the groud you can get it.

there is a huge community of nissan people that build some insanely competitive rigs that rival most jeeps on the trails.

I am pretty loyal to nissan, on my 3rd pathy now and the last 2 lasted well over 300,000km. Now I admit my new r50 model (96-2004) is more of a street machine but even 100% it has kept up with builtup jeeps on the trails and gone through much more then most stock jeeps could take.

Open your mind a little

you do know that the 05 jeeps have the 5.7L hemi that puts out 315hp thats a lot more than your little nissian. also the new jeep grand cherokee srt8 is comming out in september. 415hp 0-60 in under 5 secs!! high 12's low 13's stock!!!! jeep tj's and 1993-2004 zj's and wj's ride the best of anything ive been in cause of qudacoil suspension. coils also flex much better than leaves like the exterrra has! jeep is also made in the US so parts are much cheaper.

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

'96 Cherokee sport - 150K and still going strong. Pulls my boat, gets decent mpg on long road trips (5-speed), and gets the job done in the winter. She has been from Killington to Crested Butte and she loves the snow. Take care of the 4.0L and they usually run for a long time. I do have to charge the air now at the start of the summer but I can handle the $35 recharge kit.

---------------------------

'That's disgusting'

'I'm going to tell her you said that'

nissan parts are extreamly cheep and better quality than jeep. Im not saying that jeeps are bad just that nissan isnt. Jeeps are ment to be offroad vehicles. They suck on the road and with realiabilty they fall apart. Water pumps to door hindges they suck.

thats nice...horse power isnt everything in wheeling...you can make a great crawler out of a 1.8ltr suzuki if you gear it right. and sure your jeep may beat my pathy on the street...but if your looking for speed why they hell are you buying a SUV (word thats lost alot of meaning lately). And coils ride nice on the street...I have em 4 corners on that pathy and makes for a great ride...and does flex pretty well off road. But to get mass amounts of flex out of them you have to do some pretty big changes to your links. for quick and easy large amounts of articualtion leaf springs are still the way to go...a good shakle setup alows for alot more articulation and self leveling of the body because of the way it alows the axel to become independant of the frame.

imo good independant shackels=coils BUT coil overs beat everything!!

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

^^i know hp isnt everything. actually its more torque than anything. I was just setting him straight with his comment.

jeeps arent ment as offroad toys. why do you think they dont come with lockers, mud tires, beefed up axels, twin stick transfer cases, lower gear ratios, beadlock wheels, ect. the only jeep MADE to wheel is the rubicon. go to nissian and you cane get option that include lockers ect, are you telling me that that exterra/pathfinder isnt made with wheeling in mind??

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

yeah I guess we both got off topic. Getting back to talking stock daily drivers...and in the case of the original question about older model suvs (mid 80's to mid 90's) the imports much outlasted the cherokees in breakdowns.

i agree the 80's jeeps sucked b/c of the 4.2L engine, but the 4.0L makes it about even. Its all about preferance.

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!
