Jazz?

Anyone actually listen to jazz? Personally I love it. It's such smooth and relaxing music. Recently I have been into lots of Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louie Armstrong stuff.

Let's hear some of your favorite jazz!

Bill Evans is by far my favourite, but love Billie Holliday, Vince Guaraldi, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the like.

Doesn't get much better than old jazz on vinyl on an old record player on a rainy day.

I really like miles davis and coltrane, looking to branch out.

I love kind of blue and bitches brew reminds me of the weird Egyptian fire level in super mario 64

I play tenor saxophone and I'm actually just finishing up my first year of college in New York as a jazz performance major. As far as older stuff goes, duke, sydney bechet, louis armstrong, art tatum, etc. those guys are the kings. I could go on but those are my favorite old timey dudes, although duke was doing some pretty crazy, out stuff in his later recordings. Check out "money jungle" it's a trio album of duke, max roach, and mingus and it's just rediculous. As far as more modern stuff goes, miles, coltrane, bill evans, chick corea, herbie hancock, keith jarrett, wayne shorter, michael brecker these guys are absolute masters. For dudes currently on the scene, check out joshua redman, brad mehldau, brian blade, troy roberts, etc. there are way too many to list. But those are some of my favorites. All tremendous players.

No worries. If you want me to recommend you some other albums/artists, feel free to just shoot me a pm. Also, in regards to playing, some of the best wisdom I ever heard was a James Moody quote that "there is no such thing as easy or difficult, only familiar and unfamiliar." The more you practice something the easier it will become, and the more time you spend during your practice sessions doing things you're really bad at/uncomfortable with the faster you'll get good at them. It's just like anything else in that respect, and there are no shortcuts. Also, I'm going to shamelessly self-promote a little bit. This is a recording I did with my quartet a week or two ago. The quality isn't amazing because it was just done on a single zoom recorder, but with headphones it doesn't sound half bad. More jazz/soul fusion than just straight ahead jazz, but give it a listen and tell me what you think! And if you like it, give me an upvote/follow on soundcloud. My account is brand new so I'm trying to build it as much as I can.https://m.soundcloud.com/isak-gaines/andromedas-revenge

Anyone got a spotify/youtube playlist that has a bunch of classics? I love jazz but have trouble sifting through a lot of it to find the good stuff. Also any newer stuff is okay too :)

for jazz guitar, joe pass is incredible. check out his albums blues for fred, virtuoso and virtuoso #3. incredible playing

I love jazz! I listen to it skiing a lot. Not very knowledgeable about it though I wish I was. I listen to kind of blue a lot, I need to brand out more, I like Thelonious Monk. I'd like to get some good artists to listen to from this thread!

fellow jazz performance major here (drum set player). really everyone else covered basically everyone you want to listen to. maybe also check out Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wes Montgomory

For some newer jazz I highly recommend Badbadnotgood. It's three twenty something year olds from Canada. One on piano, one on bass, and one of the best drum players I have ever heard. Check out kaleidoscope

check out george gershwin rhapsody in blue, its an orchestral arrangement but he's considered the greatest composer of the 20th century

also pat metheny and vince guaraldi

Who does piano well for jazz? I had a bunch of songs I liked saved on grooveshark but the feds nuked that site and I lost it all. I've been trying to get better at improv and I'd like to get better at jazzy sounding improv. Thinking about slower or mid tempo stuff.

I have to recommend Dave Brubeck. Especially since it's 5/4 today.

He has a lot of work that is now considered classic but my favorite is actually 2 generations of Brubeck, a lesser known album that features his family.

Check out Bill Evans. Phenomenal jazz pianist who had his own trio, but also played with Miles Davis and a bunch of others.
