Dave Brubeck

Dizzy Gelespie

Charlie Mingus

John Coltrane

Freddy Hubbard

those are some of the really big names

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Many of the chord progressions were modeled after the works of Miles Davis.

Some specific things to listen to, rather than just artists in general...

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collossus

The Quintet - Live at Massey Hall

Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster

I'm not claiming to be any sort of expert, but I like bebop/hard bop and these are some standout albums for me! Check 'em out.

definately listen to the album "chet baker sings!" and "ella and louis sing gershwin"two of my all time, any genre (and i listen to mostly hip hop)albums.theyre wonderful.
some songs i like alot:-my funny valentine-ornithology-tricotism-all the things you are-autumn leaves-all blues (LISTEN TO THIS ONE!!!!!!!)-blue monk-boplicity-easy to love-how high the moon-cry me a river-is you is, or is you aint (my baby)-it dont mean a thing (if it aint got that swing)-a night in tunisia-so what-take the "A" train

these should get you started. this is, of course, my kind of jazz. you'll have to figure out what you like i guess. im all about the swing, big band, and jazz with vocalists. you'll see if you listen to those songs. see what you like. use this list as a jumping off point i guess.
good luck.

for sure, these are all hella good

count basie is awesome too, art blakey and the jazz messengers, clifford brown, wycleffe gordon is a filthy trombone player, charlie parker for old shit, maynard ferguson, lionel hampton, Duke Ellington is amazing, Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band are a really good big band, so much awesome stuff out there.

i didn't know people on here liked jazz, i was under the impression it was all about that hipity hop music you youngsters are so fond of

wow, soo glad this thread showed up, coincidentally I was thinking I needed to broaden my jazz horizons, low and behold this thread. thank you very much.

Hahaha, jazz is where it's at. Most of the big names have been covered - try out US3, pretty cool mix. There's a track called Jazz No Chaser that I used as the backing to one of my tramp videos - very cool track. Also check out a track called Take 5 - plenty on youtube.

Grant Green - Matador (There is a lot of solid Grant Green though)

Jimmy McGriff - Electric Funk

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius

Medeski, Martin and Wood - Shackman

John Scofield - Bump and A Go Go

The Slip - Does

The Whitefield Brothers - In The Raw

Both of those high schools are in Seattle, and i live near em, ive heard some of the players play live, they are crazy good.
