absolutely amazing, I've just been listening to Sonny Rollins all day and figured I'd make a thread on it. Anybody else around here appreciate real jazz??

You better have Saxophone Collosus! By far, best Sonny Rollins album. If you're into that, check out Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster. Also, Kind of Blue needs to be mentioned (for people reading the thread, if you like Rollins, you already have Kind of Blue). The Quintet at Massey Hall is also really good. Total all star line up - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus. The best live lineup I've ever heard of.

i love jazz. thelonius monk is a badass on the piano, dizzie gallespie rules it on the trumpet, and billie holiday, well, she's just the shit.

jazz is quite nasty shoite. wynton marsalis, miles davis, john coltrane, herbie hancock. has anyone heard of medeski, martin, and wood. they're a new jazz/funk band. they're sort of hard to categorize but they're sick

yea man medeski martin and wood are definately sick, way more of a modern jazz/funk sound though for sure. Real good though in that respect

ya ive been to both soulive and MMW concerts and they were amazing. the MMW show was more of a promo for their cd out louder which also was amazing but i wish they had played anonamous skulls. such a sick song!

the bad plus

i've seen pat metheny twice and he has blown my mind each time. i have yet to see redman, but i have friends who have who agree that i'll shit my pants. i can't wait.

got it and like it, my girlfriend actually got me into him.

i listed him before, but i cannot express my love for christian mcbride enough. he's a bass player that does such a great job of molding jazz into all other genres and he's simply amazing, not to mention he has played with metheny before. do yourself a favor and check out his album "live at tonic". saw him live and met him, was stunned.

check him out here:

Twenty-something is a great album, but i didn't really like Catching tales too much at all, it just sounded way too pop.

Pat Metheny is so good, i got to see Joshua Redman play sax with Umphrey's Mcgee for a whole set and it was soo damn good, and Herbie Is a definite fave of mine. Check out the album brain child by Herbie Hancock.

ahmad jamal is another good piano legend. and the bad plus is such an ill modern jazz trio. i saw them at the village vanguard once in greenwich village and they tore the place down. thelonious monk is the dopest cat around in my opinion, and if you also like rap, check out the SHADES OF BLUE album by madlib. it is the only rap record ever put out by blue note. they let madlib into the archives and he remixes some classics.

Sonny Rolling is my FAV!!

Check out the recording Sonny Side of the Street its by Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt... SOOO EPIC!

i just invited a bunch of people who have posted in here to the jazz cult i started a long time ago that pretty much immediately died. maybe you guys can pump some life into it. pm me if you want an invite.

i know this thread is abit old but jazz is jsut too good.

Probably one of the bext jazz trombonists of all time is JJ Johnson, if you like BeBop style jazz try and listen to JJ johnson & Al grey - Things are getting better all the time

is there a way u could upload that? A few days ago i was trying to find some jj johnson but couldnt get anything

Im not trying to hate on this thread, but I find that if a subject or genre of music is brought up, People automatically try to claim it by name dropping all the artists they can from that genre, even if it has already been said. Im guilty of it occasionally, but its pretty easy to see if you pay attention to it.

I went to help my mother waitress at her restaurant one night. She told me they were having a "special show" for some guests. Turns out, I got to see and meet Pat Metheny (who did a duet with Steve Swallow). It was pretty damn cool. I served these people their food, got to sit down and listen to the first set, serve them their desserts, and sit down for the second set. Then, at the end I served Pat his dinner and sat down and chatted with him. I had never really listened to jazz before this, but damn, he was good. I enjoyed every minute.

i saw herbie hancock at berklee a few weeks ago, and it was GREAT. i think part of truly appreciating this music is to go see the artists at work, because just watching these guys put their hearts and souls into the music is awesome. for an encore, herbie came back and played 'chameleon', which is great, but KENNY GARRETT came out with him and played! it was sooooooo good, garrett fucking rips at alto.

Shit jazz is probably my favorite music especially for just chillin out. I don't know what I'd do if I weren't playing in a jazz ensemble 3 mornings a week. We get to do So What too, mad tight.

well i just saw pat metheny AGAIN! 3rd time, and it was great. i've seen the pat metheny group, pat with brad mehldau, and this time it was the pat metheny trio, which consists of pat, CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE on bass, and ANTONIO SANCHEZ on drums. a truly amazing combo, i loved it. he's probably the only artists i don't mind seeing over and over again.
