Jazz in ski movies?

i was listenin to some miles davis and ray charles the other day while watchin Idea with the soundtrack muted and it was actually really sick

idk... if the ski community was more influenced by jazz, or if more movies supported jazz u think itd be sick? or just sorta laid back and not as intense... kinda like idea

opinions?

i dont even like hip hop all that much so with like every edit i've ever made none of them have rap. more like rock and soft rock. i like them.

its all editing. a good editing makes everything nice. for example the "bolero project". its a classical track that a lot of people wouldnt consider great, but in connection with the black/white pictures, kinda slowmo, it ended up in a great movie.

the kicker session in seven sunny days with bach is another example. i personally thought about using classical music in our movie, but didnt get a license-free version of the song i looked at.

but i found a ac/dc cover band and will use one of their older tracks. i have never seen hardrock in a ski movie (there might be, but i cant remember). but i will try, by editing you can make it fit. in this case i might need to fasten the frame-rate, make hard and fast cuts to make it great.

but with jazz (actually i am looking now, if i find a licence-free jazz track for our movie) you wanna slow down the speed, soften the cuts and a lot of things, but i think it will work.

i personally hate it how everyone puts some underground hiphop in their edits, i absolutely hate it. i cant understand how everyone is trying to copy existing pro-movies.

If it's a good track, well of course then it's going to be received well. People don't love every rap beat used in an edit, in fact, some really suck. Some sick edits have been backtracked with instrumentals, 80s flashbacks, or other random shit. It's really not about the song, as much as the skiing (though I do admit that a song can change the mood of a segment entirely-- watch Sammy's seg in Yeah Dude with Mickey Avalon, and then go back into the extras and watch it with the original music choice, totally makes a difference, though the video reel is still the same.) If you have a dope jazz beat, cool throw it in an edit and let's see how it is. It'd be cool if it caught on, but the next thing you know, shit's getting dubbed as "played out". I'd be interested what the right track and the edit could look like.

Fuckin' a. That CD is one of my favorites.

I would LOVE to see jazz in a ski movie, or really anything aside from hip hop, rap, and occasional 80's pop. With jazz the section would be mellow, but really exciting at the same time--it's just the nature of the music. It will probably never happen, but I suppose I can keep dreaming.

I like jazz a lot in ski edits, but also a genre thats left out largely is good electronic, like yelle, justice, simian mobile disco, ratatat, mstrkrft, and stuff like that. I get tired of gangster rap in skiing. join me in the emo skiing movement.

omg i love the soundtrack to idea.... its so sick, i was just kinda expeirementin cuz i thought "dam this soundtracks hella laid back".... "dam i have some jazz songs that are hella laid back"

so i tried it out and was sick... idk some of the jazz beats and stuff are a lot like the hmob tracks just in the way that they flow well with chill powder shots and stuff and theyre really mellow

check out meathead films for some jazz/funk music for a lot of powder skiing in their movies and bonus footage. the way it's done makes powder look sooo good

Theres always room for jazz!

I agree with whats been said though. Theres too much rap and not enough of everything else. Id like to see more rock or electro or maybe jazz or classical....if the editing is tight anything could work, so long as its well chosen.

As a Jazz musician I think it would be a cool idea, but it would hardly work out. I don't even listen to much jazz when riding or making edits. However when I ride it feels like I'm up on stage playing Piano or Guitar just soloing to a standard. I gotta make quick decisions to how and what I play over the song and make it sound better than good, I have to make it sound relaxed but focused. So thought it's very much the same, many people aren't well educated in "decent" music and wouldn't appreciate it unless it's behind some sort of contrived lyrics about 'life in the city' or some other bullshit.

I'm only down if its Gansta Jazz. I want Gs doing drive by horning. Otherwise Jazz doesn't belong in skiing.

the music in idea is influenced a lot by jazz except not as complicated. to use some old school jazz you'd need something that has an awesome build up maybe some maynard ferguson.

There isnt really that much hip hop in ski movies lately. If you think about it, they all have a couple token hip hop songs but there is a lot more electronic, euro type stuff (mainly cause everyone wants to be TBC). Oh, and there has always been rock in ski movies, for the person up above who thought there was never any hard rock in ski movies. I mean, look at ski porn. I, personally, didn't really like the soundtrack but there was plenty of hard rock. But anywho, jazz would be dope if it wasnt too wandery. The Bad Plus could be dope

one hardrock song then i thought fit amazing was in Session 1242, i think in Anthony Boronowski's seggy had Skidrow's Youth Gone Wild and was AMAZING, like u said iz all about the editing...

I personally think Reggae fits really well in edits and would def like to c more of it

If I ever make a ski movie, you can bet your ass there will be some smokin' jazz tunes in the soundtrack.

I think we will move away from rap. The 4bi9 Final WCS edit proves that it is possible to do something different after using hyphy and rap for pretty much everything else.

I would love to see jazz in a movie.

Not sure about Miles Davis...I don't mind listening to his stuff

(especially with Coltrane) but other than stuff like idea it just

wouldn't fit. I wouldn't mind hearing some big band park sessions though...Jamey Abersold's "Birdman" would be epic.
