Jay peak and the rest of the east coast lies about snowfall amount?

I don't ski the east coast so I can't say first hand but this looks pretty convincing.

I know northstar in Tahoe is a bit generous with their numbers but kirkwood, where I ski most of the time is pretty spot on and gets a substantially larger amount of snow.

more than likely they do lie. they just measure the biggest wind drift they can! also, they will never tell you conditions are bad, raining, etc.. i wish they would be more honest if im going to drive all the way there to find out its pure ice, death cookies, etc..

yea its pretty messed up considering people like me drive 7hrs to Jay peak sometimes.

do they actually lie about the trails open too? can they say they will have 42 trails open when its not near that?

"Ski area's like Alta, Utah and wolf Creek, Colorado clearly match up with their official nws climate stations. You can infer the average snowfall in area assuming somewhat similar elevation/lattitude."

Or not...

I really don't think it's that big of an issue, Jay gets enough snow on it's own and really has no need to fumble numbers when they have the "jay cloud" working for their marketing. Southern VT resorts have to make an appeal somehow, but Mount Snow is extremely honest with their snowfall amounts, Killington has been the one in the past with the worst track record of this. Maybe it's just me though, usually just knowing it snowed is good enough to get me out there.

See but that's where snowfall is widely recorded, and it's a major safety issue. They don't lie because they can't, not because they wouldn't haha

resorts definitely do pad the stats a little bit to look good. no surprise there. a little misleading yeah but it's not like they're saying its a pow day when there hasn't been a drop of snow in 3 days

Widely recorded? Aren't the NOAA weather stations pretty accurate?

I know west coast resorts would get called out HARD if they lied about their snowfall.

That's literally exactly what he just said... They don't lie because they can't, not because they wouldn't. Because at those west coast resorts there are avy issues and such, they could get in a lot of hot water if they lied about snowfall totals or conditions. Jay Peak on the other hand, not so much.

Loon always does this. Theyll be like "got 3 inches at the summit today" when in reality it rained all day. Like this actually happened.

Stratton lies for sure and I love that they are supposed to put up daily web reports on the conditions but they have only done 15 this season and they only happen on days when there is fresh snowfall or great conditions.

baker lies so much its ridiculous. never trust them. when they say 32 degrees and snowing its actually 37 and pouring rain.

Jay is pretty good at telling everyone when the conditions are really shitty. Just look at their daily snow reports from the last two weeks.

First sign of lies, shooting the messenger.

Honestly I could give 2 shits what you guys state as snowfall totals.

Just found it interesting. I've never skied out on the east coast so I was surprised when I saw average season snowfall totals greater than that of Colorado front range mountains.

this is true, im goin up thurday so been checking a lot and they have been honest by saying its been raining an what not and its updated daily unlike a lot of other mountains around here

Jay is also somewhat infamous for using old photos as photo of the day to make conditions appeal more to the public

The 6 or 7 hour trip to Jay is usually worth it. They usually get a dump load of snow but this year has been shitty on all mountains.

Dude they get nuked on like few places. Go fuck yourself and your shitty attitude, Jay isn't making up the fact that they get a ridiculous amount of snow. It's an amazing place, I mean hell I skied 2' of UNREPORTED pow there this last memorial day. Not to mention- for fuck's sake man, a Jay segment beat out all kinds of big dick locations for last year's powder award for best pow scene. Show some goddam respect for the place.

I really think you should stop now. Hating on Jay specifically will get you nowhere fast haha

Many times snowfall is less about what's on the ground outside and more about what the other guy said.

Crack Shack Mountain is reporting 7 inches of snow, so you report that you have 9 when you actually have 5.

It's always packed powder regardless.

Wut?

Also, you're an idiot. Ski resorts everywhere lie all the time about conditions. I'm shocked this is in any way news to you.

look at it this way.. if the skiing isnt good.. jay has a waterpark... women in bikinis, slopeside, during winter.. all that green card money is making it a resort now and im okay with it.. minus the rude fat pasty canadians.

You obviously didn't bother to read anything in the link I posted where it stated that the other weather stations were in agreement with (Utah and Colorado) ski resort snowfall totals.

If you don't like the articles facts and links posted feel free to refute it with some other weather evidence. My "respect" goes out the window when marketing teams lie to increase their snowfall totals. Northstar gets called out all the time by locals. They also called out killington for their claims as well...

Why not an honest and non-sarcastic answer from Jay about how they measure snow?

And since when did I become a hater just because I posted some link that refutes the amount of snow they average?

This isn't true. Our snow stake is mid mountain, in a small meadow/clearing in the middle of trees. No wind there at all, and totally transparent reporting along with a live streaming webcam stake viewable by anyone. We report exactly what is there. Ive heard Breck lies, but we don't. 180" or so on the season

Im not here to argue with anyone,

But I checked out that data and whats its lacking is the information regarding wind patterns...

It is also ONCE A MONTH data statin that you posted, that means they take temp and snow depth every 30 days, Which would have a huge effect on snowfall numbers, what with new englands insane abilty to thaw in January....

Not only is the NOAA data station on the west side of the mountain(least amount of snow any mountain gets) . So that would lead to a varied data from the mountain.

It also gets HEAVY lake effect storms due to the wind patterns in the region, all the storms that roll off the great lakes funnel into a wind tunnel that takes them right to jays doorstep, but not before gaining strength over lake champlain!!!!!! (JAY CLOUD'S.......)

Also if you look at Jay geographically it has a longe east to west spine that leads into a east facing bowl, causing the snow to drift and blow into/on the resort. Again causing noaa to get different information.

That all being said I do believe JAY also takes measurements at the summit and calls that good.....

Because last year I lived in between jay and sugarloaf and they got almost the same snowfall and jay reported like 100" over sugarloaf by the end of the season....

On a random note I worked at sugarloaf last year and they reported like 178" at the base lodge, I lived 200' below the base lodge and 15 min away and I got 220" in my front yard. Possible I measured wrong by by 40"..... i doubt it

It's really the notion that they owe you something that I find annoying to be honest. I'm fine with the discussion but you attitude fucking sucks dude.

he definitely didn't shoot the messenger but he should have cause you're an idiot

you're claiming to know jay peaks snowfall better than jay peak and yet you've never been to jay peak..where do you get off.

But don't go there the snow sucks

Holla whitegrass! Love that place and the locals gots da moonshynz too. Such good souls at that hill. I hope they get smashed by another snowicane soon so I can go back.

Grand Targhee is always quite good about it. A 10" day can sometimes end up being a 12-14" day on some runs. Jackson Hole on the other hand is just the opposite. a 14" day turns out to be a 9 or 10" day in my experience. Locals have said the same thing.
