Japan just got hit with a 7.9 earthquake

Kilauea was kicking out like 4x as much MAAGGGMMMAAA in the last couple weeks, i wonder if its all related? Big convection cell hit the mantle and changed the pressure at plate boundries, knocking it loose or something. That's my guess.

At that distance you can't predict it... I expect no big waves for the US west coast, but probably a foot high maximum for hawaii - could cause damage, but mostly will just run high on the beaches and maybe flood the immediate coast at highest effected areas. You cant really say though.. tsunamis that are as high as 4 metres have been said for the areas that hit hardest in northern japan... if this thing builds up high, it could hit hawaii with a 2-3 foot tsunami, potentialy. gnar.

have a couple friends over in japan right now, hopefully they are all safe and sound.
I was just reading an article the other day talking about earthquakes etc. occurring over the next few days of march across the globe, to which I thought was just some conspiracy bs, but to see this happen is just terrible.

Shit's pretty wild, some crazy footage on the news, I didn't notice it personally, there's no damage at all in Niseko. Hope everyone down south is ok. Not sure what the ground has against my countries of residence right now (I live in NZ in the summer), but it needs to calm the fuck down!

Here you go, you have to click, "Use old embed code".

Regardless, I just watched the Al Jazeera live feed. Vibes to all of Japan.

Heavy shit. It's reminding me of how much Tahoe is due for one and how badly it would fuck up our region. Over 100 ft tsunamis would go down, it would be gnar.

Okay I do remember seeing that. However... I have a feeling there's going to be a quake that sinks socal before it floods tahoe hah.

Still rocking here to a few aftershocks. And little to no cellphone service.

Not too stoked to hear about the nuclear reactor that has lost all its cooling systems, causing a state of emergency to be declared.

Sending my vibes. It's been a really bad year for quakes with too many notable ones around the world.

The earth seems to be very active right now.

Would be a nice start if the people who lost their cars, houses, possessions, etc were given your luxury items you inconsiderate prick.

Ive got a friend living in hawaii ( husband is military ) and shes saying they are getting hit next, and theres a high chance of wreckage from japan hitting shore. Even San Fran has a tsunami warning out

My uncle lives in Maui and my mom/sister are visiting him there right now. They said that the damage/impact isnt really that bad nor going to be that bad from the waves.

Yeh just watched it again, I think you're right. Guardian newspaper misleading me =/

Just copying this straight from the Guardian live updates. Hawaii just got hit:

2.03pm: The tsunami has reached Hawaii, the Associated Press reports.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning CentrE said Kauai was the first island hit early Friday by the tsunami. Water rushed ashore in Honolulu, swamping the beach in Waikiki and surging over the break wall in the world-famous resort but stopping short of the area's high-rise hotels.

Waves at least 3ft (a metre) high were recorded on Oahu and Kauai, and officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger.

Roadways and beaches were empty as the tsunamis struck the state, which had hours to prepare. Residents in coastal areas of Hawaii were sent to refuge areas at community centers and schools while tourists in Waikiki were moved to higher floors of their high-rise hotels. People waited in long lines stocking up on gas, bottled water, canned food and generators, and officials told residents to stock up on water and fill their cars with gas.

Waves are predicted to hit the western coast of the United States between 11am and 11.30am EST (4pm to 4.30 GMT) today.

Shit´s blowing up everywhere. Haiti, Chile, NZ, Japan...

Tsunamis and earthquakes were something so far and unknown for me, until it hit us, me personally, last year here in Chile.

Now we´re on a tsunami alert too and my parents are goign crazy moving all our important shit to the second floor..If another tsunami comes again, I dont know...I dont know if my house wil hold up...im moving out to the mountains for good.

Best Vibes to Japan.

First glance as I was watching it a few hours ago, I thought it was mass panic and just a sea of japanese just truckin it ameoba style, and running for higher ground...
then I realized it was just a massive debris flow... and realized the dots were trucks...
Just ridiculous to see.

The NW is on a tsunami advisory, although i doubt that it will ever reach us. On another note the NW is due for a massive earthquake in the next 100~ years or so.
