"January Thaw"

i read this article on the "January Thaw":

The January thaw is an observed but unexplained weather phenomenon found in mid-latitude North America whereby temperatures tend to rise briefly in mid-winter.

Sinusoidal estimates of expected temperatures, for northern locales, usually place the nadir around January 23 and the crest around July 24, and provide fairly accurate estimates of temperature expectations. Actual average temperatures, in North America, usually exhibit two pronounced deviations from this estimate:

- Mid-autumn temperatures tend to be warmer than as predicted by the sinusoidal model, creating the impression of extended summer warmth known as Indian summer.

-For five days around January 25, empirical expected temperatures are usually significantly warmer than as predicted by the sinusoidal estimate, and also warmer than neighboring temperatures on both sides.

During this "thaw" period, usually lasting for about a week, tempeartures are generally about 10°F (6°C) above normal. This is not invariant from year to year, and temperatures fluctuate enough that such a rise in late-January temperature would be unremarkable; what is remarkable (and unexplained) is the tendency for such rises to occur more commonly in late-January than in mid-January or early February, which sinusoidal estimates have to be slightly warmer.

its 60 degrees here on the east coast. I guess that explains it.

Yeah, but above freezing for like a whole month... come on. Febuary and March had better be amazing.

you just wait.. april we'll get a freak storm and all the resorts will already be closed.. then the following day itll rain and all be gone..

this winter is shapin up to be the worst ever..

i have heard things on weather specails that we will get dunped on, and its not global warming really, that has only increase the tempature like 2 degress in the past 5 years, its just a sucky winter

an increase in temp of 2degrees is really global warming.. what you want it to do.. increase like 10degrees to constitute global warming??

you guys are beat quick global warming has nothing to do with it all global warming does is make the earth 1 degree hoter each yeah

this is not global warming, global warming doenst happen in a year in like twenty years if the avg goes up 1 degree that's global warming, this is just unusual weather but its cause by the relatively straight jet stream and we're on the warm side of it

congratulations evan, you managed to spell dylan wrong. i was wrong though, i read it and something similar was posted, but not this, and im no post whore, just a regular one

i would agree if its been warm for a week.. but its been warm since christmas, besides a day or two here and there

there is no global warming. it does not exist. The earth doesnt rotate on a perfect axis. like a top, it wobbles, and right now we're wobbling closer to the sun. So in the past 10 years or so it's gotten slightly warmer. In like 10,000 years it'll wobble back and away from the sun, and we'll have another ice age.

yea, hes right, you know how the first time you tried a corked spin you kind of wobbled? thats wuts happening to earth right now

ya tahoe is definately not thawing right now...no higher than 20 degrees there today and we're gettin our best snow yet! i love tahoe...january always pulls through for us

for the east coast downhill bikers we might as well get our bikes out and the the mountains another couple of weeks like we're having on the eastcoast and they'lll be no more snow its even to warm at night to blow snow. we better get dumped on in Febuary.
