Jail question

So my roommate went to jail this Friday, apparently there was a warrant out for his arrest. I don't know what he did but he has been in there for a two days now. A unreliable source told me that judges don't work on weekends, therefore bail cannot be set until Monday morning.

My other roommate and I agreed to go on monday and see if there was anything we could do to get him out since classes would be starting then. I'm just wondering if there was anything we could have done previously this weekend to get him out. If there is, he's probably going to be mad.

contact a bondsman cuz you're probably not gonna be able to afford his bail. even small bail ammounts for small crimes are a couple thousand bucks.

if you want more info pm me and i'll tell you the differences between bailing out and bonding out, etc. but your source is right.. judges don't work on weekends so he wont even have a bail ammount set till monday morning if he's lucky.

Thanks man. I get off from class pretty early tomorrow so I'm going to head to the station to see if I can get any info from that. And I'm pretty surprised my friend was right, he's an idiot.

I'll PM you tomorrow after I figure out why he's even there.

I'll just post the differences here...

Ok, so lets say his bail is 1,000 dollars.

If you chose to bail him out, you would have to put up the 1,000 dollars to get him out of jail. Bail is basicaly a down payment to the courts saying that you will show up to your court date and not go on the run. It is fully refundable assuming he shows up to all court dates but wouldn't be given back to you until a couple weeks after sentencing and there's a fair amount of paperwork involved in getting it back. However, if he is found guilty on his charges and he has fines as part of his sentence, they might take the bail money and put it toward the fines.

If you choose to bond him out, you contact a bondsman and usually pay 10-20 percent of what the bail amount is, so if his bail was 1,000 bucks. you would pay the bondsman 100-200 bucks and he would pay the bail. Bond money is not refundable. If you bond the guy out, you will have to sign papers to the bondsman saying if your friend goes on the run you'll help track him down. The bondsman will send a bounty hunter after him and all that shit.

If his bail is over 5,000 or 10,000 obviously you have to still pay 10-20 percent of that but you would also have to put up collateral. (I had to give a bondsman my car title)

Thats pretty much it.

yea well... selling 10 pounds of weed/mushrooms a week when you're 18 and 19 years old will do that to you.... oh to be young and stupid.

no, because bondsman are contracted with the courts and will get their bail money refunded back.

essentially bondsman are in the bail out business to make money. most people dont go on the run, so its a safe investment for the bondsman to make you pay them 10-20 percent of your bail then they will pay the entire bail amount for you and when you show up to court, they get their money back and keep that 10-20 percent you paid them, thus, profiting.

it depends on the cops. i've had cops let me stop at an atm before they took me in so I could get bail money and bail myself out once processed.

and to the OP - it really depends on the charge. if you have to go before a judge to have your bail set, then you cannot be bailed out on a sunday. if it's just a bs charge with a set bail, then you can get out sooner. otherwise you're waiting until Monday morning to see a judge. shit sucks.

Thanks for all the tips guys. We got our roommate back now and everything should be fine. Apparently there was a warrant out because there was never documentation of him paying a ticket. The only bad part is that he got a minor that night because he had a few drinks before leaving the house, but at least it wasn't anything too serious.
