Erich!!! now i agree with you on some counts here but come on, you should have some respect for the man. Hemmingway never wrote about hanging out in Washington. Where is Desolation Peak anyways?

'I call your momma Roy Jones cause she raise chickens!'

oh, and i think what erich was trying to say was that he wasn't trying to be cool as much it was a form of self-righteousness..? does that make any sense?

Yeah, that does make sense and I see where you are going with it for sure.

I guess what I am getting at is that the characters that Kerouac paints for us, especially Ray or Sal of Dharma Bums/On the Road aren't so much being self rightious, but having some pity for some of the folks that the characters come across. Pity and Humility can come hand in hand. The difference is that when the characters are looking out on the world, and seeing the people that are tied down, hung up or up tight, Ray and Sal don't say 'you suck, I rule' so much as 'Its a shame that you don't see it like I do too'

Self-righteousness is more of an exclusionary thing, but the attitude that Keroucas characters have is far more welcoming than that. He shows these characters WANTING other folks to be as happy as his characters are. And that isn't 'Cooler than you' or 'Self Righteous'

alpentalik-everyone has pretty much responded to what you said, but i still have to interject. how could you say something like that? even if you don't like kerouac's writing, which you're completely welcome to do, you should still respect him for the way he revolutionized american literature and mobilized an entire generation. if you don't like him, fine. but respect his success and his message.

on another note, anyone who is interested should get kerouac's book of haikus. its some of his better short poetry. and, check out memory babe by gerald nicosia for the best kerouac biograph you'll ever read.

I took Erich's statement as a joke, in so far as his rant about how Mario doesn't need some dinosaur like Yoshi because he can 'stomp his own game out' was a joke. I laughed, anyways.
