okay, jack johnson is a filmaker, musicain (sp?), and he could have become a pro surfer but decided to go to college and learn to produce films, he hangs with guys like kelly slater, rob machodo and tim curren, he was first sponsered at the age of 14 by quicksilver i think and he has produced such surfing movies as Thicker than Water, and September sessions which is shown on bluetorch often. his cd is called brushfire fairytales and he has just gone on tour in austrasilia, colorado, all over the place. he is sick and you should def. download his music because i dont know a person who has disliked it yet. also... jackjohnsonmusic.com

'the problem with main stream music is most of it sucks or most of the good artists that get popular sellout and their stuff isnt as good' I'm talking about that. not jack johnson. you obviously don't get it. Unless you're Omish, you've sold out. you buy Kraft dinner? You're supporting the tabacco industry. Selling out is degrading something, whether it be the planet, your morals or an art form (i.e. music). The problem is that you've got kids like you that don't understand what it means to be a musician, you think that because somebody changes their style (and it becomes more popular) they're selling out? I think if someone buys their songs off of people and they lie about things *cough*Bittany's Virginity*cough* then they're selling out. Because they've degraded their self and their music. The fact of the matter is, 'mainstream' music does not suck and they're not all sellouts, minus the obvious popstars. I went to Oasis last night the first few bands, ick. They weren't singing in the same tune as the rest of the band and it just wasn't good. Then the 'Mainstream' groups came on. Sloan, was awesome, Oasis... same thing. I'm tired or people saying oh I only listen to underground, because the fact of the matter is, some bands are underground for a reason. (some just have bad luck)

I was messed last night when I wrote that. excuse the harshness.

'i dont think anyone who changes style to become popular are sellouts....'

then

'a sellout would be someone who changes FOR THE PURPOSE OF GETTIN POPULAR'

haha not only do you contradict yourself you also forget that many musicians don't make music for themselves. they want to put on a good show. They go and look at online forums about their band or talk to kids after the show to see what people liked.

You obviously don't get what I'm talking about when I'm saying how everyone sells out in one way or another. Have you ever looked at the starving kids on Tv and said, 'that's a real shame' and then gone to the gas station? or perhaps spent your 85 cents a day elsewhere? then walked past a homeless person giving them no change of yours?

selling out is degrading yourself, not changing yourself. don't confuse the two.

A little while back I used to go around and call people sellouts until I realized the same thing mike was saying. Everyone is a sellout in one way or another. So now I'm aware of my whiny little brat behavior, I have took a new attituyde towards music--->if it sounds good, i'll listen to it. Very simple --->Back to the point i had never heard of Jack Johnson before he became popular. Im very glad he became popular b/c I would of never of heard his awesome music. So in a way I can actually thank popular culture (I cant believe I just said that, but I'm pretty sure thats what I wanted to say...I think)
