I've won a new computer!!

hey doug could you shed some more light on how the advertisements work...where do they come from, how do you chose which ads pop up on NS, and what you do about companies that put up shitty ads (do you stop working with them or just remove the one ad?)

Also i'm getting more and more concerned with the transfer of data, after loading pages i'll just watch the status bar at the bottom seeing "transfering data" to this ad site, or to some random ip address. Do you guys know whats going on with that?

Right after reading this thread and going back to the board I just got this ad. The first time I had a noise making ad on this site. It was kinda annoying because the voice just kept talking. I can't wait for next season when we have ski ads and don't have to deal with talking bullshit.

regional IP tracking for future ads that will be more related to the location you are in?

I for one, am all for that. I mean, if there are going to be ads, having advertisements better related to the region I am in, is tons more useful.

I dont think NS gets enough advertising to be able to break it down like that.

Future maybe.

probably my favorite ad so far:

There's two types of ads that run on this site. Ads that are purchased directly by an advertiser, and ones that are run through a remnant ad company.

So when you see an ad for say Spyder or Salmon, those have been purchased directly by the client. They can decide how the ads are displayed, and there's many options. They can be targeted to specific sections of the site, only displayed in certain frequencies, targeted geographically by IP address, pretty much whatever you want.

The second type is called remnant inventory. So we go to a company like www.advertising.com, and they have many clients with many different types of ads. We take their feed, and they just fill it with whatever they've got. We have the ability to block individual advertisers if the creative sucks, we don't like the company, etc. So if you see something that makes sound, TAKE A SCREEN CAP! We can get it blocked.

The reason we had to use the second type of ad is that it was a slow year in the world ski advertising. This is a way to easiliy generate revenue without requiring support of only ski-related companies.

However, its a whole shitload more annoying than its worth in my opinion, so we're working with ski compaines to better sort out packages for 'em so they'll buy up the inventory in the banner spots and see much more worth out of their ad package.

We've cut prices significantly for 08/09, and we're now roughly 1/10th the price of some competing websites.

So if you've got a company, hit me up! We'll set you up with someing absolutely fucking banger!

Is there no option from advertising.com to disable sound/drop down ads (like CTV)?

Thanks doug,

just wondering, how much DOES advertising space cost on NS? is it low enough so that if members send in $$ they could "buy" ad space and fill it with nothing -- or user content?

Some Nigerian king wants me to be his friend and i'll get 1 million US dollars if i send a 400 check for his plane ticket.

I've noticed the regional ads, i live in the u.k and i always get ads about flights/visa's to america etc. also get ads about car companies over here, and i don't get the ads like 'you've won a comuter' and whatnot. To be honest, if its generating money for ns so that they can stock up the shop or improve the site it really doesnt bother me, i'll live with it
